It is so unpredictable.

That used to be called the smorgasbord defense.

If it's 3rd and long. 9 out of 10 times BV is sending the house. Which leaves someone open for huge gains. Live by the blitz, die by the blitz.

Coach Venables will blitz, and you are correct it puts guys on an island at times. But our D will likely lead the pack again in creating negative plays. That sets tempo and momentum in such a big way in games. Also, if you studied Mond much you would’ve seen he really struggles against pressure. Venables pressured him all day and rattled him from the start. Worked to perfection.

Wording is key. I'm not talking about simple corner, lb, safety, etc blitzes we run all game long. I'm talking about the predictability of BV to send everyone, ie "the house" on 3rd and long far too frequently no matter the opponent. When it pays off yeah it's awesome. But when it doesn't drives get unnecessarily extended.
Make no mistake about it. BV is the greatest Defensive Coordinator in the profession imo. This is the only critique I have of him during game time.

And we’re often in the top 5 for scoring defense. I think he’s got the mix right

I’d like to hear more about that TE being wide open; someone drop coverage, too many rush? No way Brent would leave Mond with a wide open TE in the endzone.
Garbage time but still curious if that was by design.

Correct. A lot of 3 man front. I’m not sure if we saw that any last year.

It's also deep . I know the DT situation is under construction , but my gosh we've got very little drop off in our 1s and 2s .

I was a little disappointed in our coverage when we just rushed thee men. Naturally we were not going to get much pressure on Mond, so our guys were going to have to cover well. I though we gave up way too much yardage, especially on the perimeter. Thank goodness for some bad throws and drops on catchable passes. It is hard to get upset though on what should have been giving up 3 points. Overall, if that is the only thing I have to complain about we are going to be OK!

BV is on a whole new level this year. Forget about the fronts and packages. Watch both of our games again and look at our defense blitz concepts. It truly is a chess game. He has LBs setting picks for CBs. As soon as a HB picks up our blitzed, that triggers someone else staying at home to rush the backfield. Offenses no longer see where the blitz is coming from pre-snap because they action during the play. He has created defense in depth at all three levels too and we will see more coverage sacks (or picks). As our players get more experienced and adjusted to these concepts, they will continue the trend of being one of the top defenses at the end of the season.

I can only imagine how happy Venables will be when he adds Murphy, Capehart, Bresee, Williams, and possibly Burch to his bag of weapons. Will be simply nasty. I think Bresee will play a lot his first year.
