Just looking at the top 10 alone for 2020 - We have to expand to 8..

Jan 23, 2020, 6:26 AM

Just being honest and this is not a flame at all, but there are several teams that might have multiple losses and be a top team.

I don’t think your schedule and/or championship conference game should prevent you from even having a chance to make the play offs.

Now, I can’t stand LSU and this past year was a unique thing they did but a bounce here or there against Alabama and who knows what happens?

If Tua had been healthy all season and Alabama won — LSU would not have made it to the SEC Title game and we would have never seen them easily coast to the national title over Oklahoma and Clemson. LSU would have sat at home. Think about that. And, I was pulling hard for Clemson to beat LSU - I can’t stand them.

I’m just being honest. We have got to expand to 8.

Is that you Spurrier? You sound like whiny Spurrier when his chickens beat every SEC Least team (not hard to do), but managed to lose to his SEC West opponents, so his chickens did not get to win the SEC Least division and play in the SECCG. He wanted to change the rules so that ONLY the games in his division counted. While it made a little sense, it sounded more like a spoiled brat that always got his way by whining.

Bottom line, if you cannot make the CFP by winning your conference championship, then maybe you need to switch to the Sun Belt, Pac-12 or some other conference. Only ONE team from the SEC deserves to be in the CFP each year.

Why not just go with a full-blown tournament? Say, 64 teams. That’d get UGA in and they wouldn’t have to win their conference. Maybe then y’all could have a rematch with UofSC cause, you know, SEC and all...

Good gosh, man. Really??

The purpose of the playoff is to determine who the best team is.

Jan 23, 2020, 6:53 AM

When has the playoff ever failed to do that? Even with 4 only 2 or at the most 3 (like this year) have a legit shot. Expansion is frivolous, unnecessary and will ruin the bowl games. The playoff exists to answer questions that have not already been answered in the regular season. 2017 was the only outlier because no one other than Bama was worthy of the fourth spot. Did we really need to see Georgia lose to LSU again this year? No but we did need to see LSU beat the winner of OSU and Clemson in order to make them undisputed national champions. My advice to Georgia, Oregon and the rest is not to lose multiple games in the season and stop wasting our time with expansion talk just because your team wasn’t good enough to make the cut.

“I don’t think your schedule and/or championship conference game should prevent you from even having a chance to make the play offs. ‘

What are you saying here? You EARN the right to be in the playoffs by your performance on the field during the year and in the conference championship game. It’s not that you were great, but you “tripped up” in the conference championship, so you get to go anyway. That kind of thinking is rampant in the SEC where they just want the media (ESPN) to anoint them to the playoffs every year. ESPN would rather have as many SEC teams as possible.

There aren’t 8 worthy teams ANY year. If you want to include all 5 conference champions, I like the idea, but then we need 3 “others” that would not be worthy, likely given to SEC teams (like Georgia) who can look for a mulligan EVERY YEAR. No way would I want that.

In a regular season game, maybe we play LSU at home instead of on the road. Maybe our Defensive leader doesnt get taken out of the game for targeting, maybe LSU is tired from playing a tough game the week before instead of an utter cupcake. They beat us, but we could have won if a thing or two went our way. There is no way you can say if we were to play that game again it would be automatic for LSU. They were the best on THAT day and that is all.

With 5 conferences and ND, 4 teams can be tough, but 8 is too many. If Clemson would have been in the SEC west, we would have had a chance to beat LSU during the season. No reason to give us a second chance. All the games should matter. With 8 teams, they matter much less.

Re: Just looking at the top 10 alone for 2020 - We have to expand to 8..

Jan 23, 2020, 7:51 AM

Expanding to 8 teams won't affect who wins the national
Championship. The best 2 teams have played in the NC game every year of CFP.

It's the NC, it's not supposed to be a participation trophy. Its purpose is to get the 2 BEST teams playing in the NC game, not to get a bunch of sub-par participants that have no chance of winning (see EVERYBODY not named LSU, Clemson, and OSU this year).

Explain to us again why it needs to be expanded to 8 teams? Typical UGA fan.

These guys will all agree with you the first time Clemson loses a close game and is excluded from the CFP.

I think 8 teams would be better for college football but only if you eliminate one regular season game. 16 games is too much for college. And the game eliminated CANNOT be the Conference Championship game. Make everyone get rid of one of their cupcakes.

Re: Just looking at the top 10 alone for 2020 - We have to expand to 8..

Jan 23, 2020, 8:39 AM

It absolutely can be the conference championship game. Most of these have been around for less than 15 years. The oldest is the SECCG which is still only 25 years old.

Go back to crowning a champion based on the regular season then go to an 8 team CFP.

No one cares about conference championships anyway with the CFP ruling all.

Re: Just looking at the top 10 alone for 2020 - We have to expand to 8..

Jan 23, 2020, 8:29 AM

A top team will not have multiple losses. Sorry, wins and losses still count in determining who is best. Using your logic, a loser in the CFP final could be given the trophy as the national champion because of their schedule, not because they won it.

Re: Just looking at the top 10 alone for 2020 - We have to expand to 8..

Jan 23, 2020, 9:18 AM

Let me turn the situation around for you.

Let's say Bama beats UGA in the regular season next year and then the two meet in the SEC title game.

UGA pulls off the upset and beats Bama to win the SEC.

Are you saying that you think it's right for UGA to have to beat Bama again and have a third matchup in 1 season?

First of all, nobody wants to watch two teams play for a third time in a season no matter how good they are.

Second, winning your conference is the first game of the playoff.

There are rare situations where a team could lose their conference title game and still make the playoffs, but to my knowledge that has yet to happen. The teams who have been in that situation have won their conference each time people said they would be in anyway.

There are already more than 4 teams in the playoff. Utah lost their playoff game last year and was bounced. LSU, OSU, Clemson, and Oklahoma won their playoff games and were in.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

2019 was the perfect example of why NOT to expand

Jan 23, 2020, 9:41 AM

LSU, Clemson and Ohio State were head and shoulders above everyone else. Oklahoma earned the fourth spot and got ANNIHILATED. Yeah things may have been different if Tua stayed healthy, but probably not. Bama essentially had one chance to impress the committee and they blew it. Expanding the playoffs will only add more fodder for the elite teams, at the expense of weird scheduling changes I don't want to see. By that I mean they're not going to expand the season to a maximum possible sixteen games, they'll shorten the regular season or something and I don't want that, and the 95% of teams that aren't within sniffing distance of the playoffs certainly don't want that.

The playoff format is perfect as it is. It's WAY better than the BCS (I don't think anyone's arguing that) and angry snubbed teams have been minimized. You're only looking at on year, and you can't look at this on a year-by-year basis. You have to pick the format that works the best over a long period of time, and they have. Football has a way of working itself out by the end of Championship Saturday.

Jan 23, 2020, 10:56 AM

Nope .... if you are not the best team in your conference we already know you are not the best team in the country. The CFP is to crown a champion not to see who is 8th best.

Jan 23, 2020, 11:50 AM

Since Georgia can't crack the top four, you want to expand the number of teams in the CFP simply to increase your likelihood of getting in?

Honestly, I would have no objection to expanding the CFP from four to eight teams provided;

1 - All of the P5 conference champions get an automatic invitation

2 - The remaining three spaces are considered "at-large" teams to be filled by the CFP Committee.

3 - No more than two teams from one conference can be included.

Re: So in other words...

Jan 23, 2020, 11:55 AM

I'm with you on all P5 champs getting in. You lose me on why a conference can't have more than 2 teams. If the committee thinks a second ACC or SEC team is among the top 8, why automatically exclude them because another team from their conference is in?

I agree about championship games, on our side I’m just imagining if we run the table, including the away games BC and Wake Forest and surviving the trap games (Akron, NC State, Citadel) and then we lose a close one in the championship and stay at home. Everyone knows we deserve to be there, it’s kinda silly to even think about at this point.

Also I’m a conspiracy theorist and I think Tua’s injury was grossly overstated. The dude threw for like 450 yards in that game, then hobbled off the field so the pollsters would work it in their favor in the final rankings. #### Bama.
