Thoughts on Clemson defense …

Aug 13, 2021, 11:23 PM

Lots of concern here about Clemson defensive performance in last two CFP games…

Something to consider..

We were outscored 91-53 combined in those two games…

Guess how many points were scored with James Skalski off the field??

42 points …

With Venables defense the play caller on the field is a critical element…

Without Skalski it’s the equivalent of your 2nd team QB playing on offense…

Which is fine playing Wake Forest …not such a great idea in the CFP….

Justifiable concerns about the use of tempo - the ability of a guy like Skalski to call out adjustments without relying on the sideline is critical…

In the Ohio State game …28 points scored with Skalski on the bench…

Another way to consider…
It was OSU 21 CU 14 and
LSU 28 CU 25

In each game when Skalski was ejected…

Valid point

but Trevor did not play well against LSU. He missed an opportunity to put us up 24-7 and once we fell behind, LSU's defense locked in on our receivers and we were done. Losing Skalski was terrible but if Nolan hadn't dropped a giftwrapped interception and if DK hadn't committed the dumbest PI on 3rd down in the history of football, I think we could have won the game even without Skalski.

I don’t disagree at all…
Lots of missed opportunities against LSU…

Against Ohio State, our defense just was not ready to play. The only two guys on D who played angry on every play were Murphy and Bresee. I was proud of them but whatever the pass defense strategy was, it completely failed. The way to beat Justin Fields was to take away his first option and force him to check down. IU did it. Northwestern did it. Olave looked like Superman out there. Skalski playing the entire game would have helped but once Fields got comfortable and was dialed in, the game was over regardless.

It may have helped if the O-line wasn't a complete embarrassment. Watching their pathetic-ness may have caused players on the defense to give up.

More depth, more talent on the field this year.

So why are so concerned with our last two performances in the CFP's?
Did you stop to think that maybe, just maybe LSU was clearly the better team that year? Nah, you probably didn't.
Or that maybe ,just maybe Ohio State wanted that game so much more than we did that they didn't bother showing up for Alabama because Alabama did to them what Alabama would have probably done to us. Our defense, top to bottom ,IMO, was just not top rated the last two years.
Look, losing Salski was hugh, no doubt ,but Salski wasn't the only person on the field that night and if he goes down, well whose your 2nd QB on defense?
I just armchair quarterbacks who seem to think they have all the answers as to why we lost.
But Is sure bet you took credit when we beat Alabama 44-14.

No sense on looking back at what if’s. They can be used in training film as examples but each team has to learn from that and execute their assignments. Our opponents will likewise expect this and adjust accordingly. Plans on both sides will succumb to Murphy’s Law. Whoever can impose their will on the other will win in the end.

Our defensive front four could not get pressure on the QB

Aug 14, 2021, 10:16 AM

consistently and both QBs knew that going into those games. Too comfortable and had the time needed to find the open man. You can't guard receivers forever no matter how talented you are. (AJ Terrell played his ### off against LSU, but alas, the passes were perfect and the receivers made some amazing plays)

If our front four can control the offensive line and get pressure like 2018, which I think they can, we'll be much better in the secondary, we'll be able to get off the field quicker and have more at bats offensively.

We're going to be pretty nasty up front. And deep.

The other teams hurry up offense should be a concern. BC used it effectively to the point our defense couldn’t get set. VT and OSU followed with the same approach.
Hopefully the D-line can get pressure. If not it will be more of the same with our secondary, that appeared confused and could not cover anyone against OSU.

Valid Points. One thing I would like to highlight as much as I like Skalski is: "it's not about his adjustments in my opinion"!

It is rather about the last second adjustments BV is making or "tries to send in to the defense"! This has been pointed out a few times by game announcers and when they don't catch it; some fans on here have called it out.

Remember: "many people think BV steals signals - which I don't necessarily believe. I think he has watched so much film and learned formations and personnel groupings that he knows what you are about to run and tries to adjust the defense to best defend that play"!

No knock on what is going on at all either way - I just think ever since the Pitt game in DV in 2016 a few clever OC have figured it out. You can't let BV get a good look at your formation and personnel grouping. Pitt used a "sugar huddle" which did two things - it used all the play clock and they didn't get over the ball for about 5 seconds before it was snapped. The huddle allowed them to all be on the same page. VT was successful for a half because they used a similar(not exact same) strategy which shortened the game giving CU less opportunities on offense.

As far as LSU and OSU:
1. LSU caught lightening in a bottle and still easily could have lost that game; but for Clemson mistakes. But, we don't cry over spilled milk. Congrats to them. They had the best OC, they had a 6th year QB, 7 future NFL caliber players and our QB did not have his best outing - and no it wasn't their defense. It was just some missed opportunities that usually happened. Oh well.
2. OSU was like the stalker ex-girlfriend who devoted the entire fiber of their being to get back at you, LOL! They were so "behind-hurt" they were obsessed with: "The - Clemson Tigers"!
They figured out some things as far as formation and groupings and the likely answer BV would come up with and basically did a variation. They too were very talented with future NFL talent and they do deserved the win. Congrats to them.
If you do not think the combination of all the before mentioned added to the absolute fact they had more preparation time meant anything then you are fooling yourself! Or are a Gamecock fan, Buckeyes fan or a Clemson hater!
