Vacation help! Wifey is asking me to forego the annual OBX

Aug 22, 2022, 9:37 AM

fall fishing trip to take her somewhere she has never been. Certain of you may recall she is doing some serious grieving. I know she will be sad wherever she goes, but I'm putting my feelings aside.

For the record...this is an early October trip. 5-6 days. Home base is the Upstate.

Option 1: Key West. Don't know what to do there. Don't know where to stay. We aren't drinkers (have you ever noticed how many events are focused on alcohol?) and I don't fault anyone that does drink...but the whole "Five O'clock Somewhere" theme doesn't apply to us.

Option II: Grand Canyon. Looks like to fly into Las Vegas and rent a car is the best option. We could do a big circle and hit some of Colorado, Utah, and California in the process. I did see some very nice helicopter tours but they cost more than the round-trip flight!

Any experience with either? Recommendations? Must-sees?

Thanking you in advance, I remain
The Mole

Do Boston with game up there. You would have time to see Boston and drive up to Maine.

Option II

Aug 22, 2022, 9:58 AM

Flew to Phoenix, drove thru Sedona (stopping at Rock Spring Cafe for Chile and pie), Jerome, Saw Montazoma’s Castle , then Flagstaff and on to Grand Canyon. Over to Medicine Hat and up thru the Monument Valley. Up Moki Dugway. Four corners, Petrified Forest NP. Route 66. All without a plan. Better by far than Key West.

Re: Option II

Aug 22, 2022, 11:49 AM [ in reply to Option II ]

This is similar to what I’ve done in the past.

One fun addition for us was taking the mules to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and spending the night at Phantom Ranch.

We also ended the trip with a couple nights in Vegas and flew home from there.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Been to both...

Aug 22, 2022, 10:05 AM

Key West is fun if you enjoy snorkeling, scuba diving, paddle boarding, sailing, kayaking, or deep sea fishing. There are also some museums, parks, and homes you can tour if you're looking to spend some time off the water. The Tortugas National Park and Fort Jefferson is pretty cool.

I absolutely loathe Las Vegas. I have to fly out there at least once annually for work. It's Myrtle Beach with gabling (trashy and low rent). However, if you're are only flying in there to start your excursion south toward the Hoover ###, Sedona and the Grand Canyon, it's fine. If you do decide on this trip, spend the extra money and take a helicopter tour of the canyon. It's entirely worth it.

Helicopter tour is amazong

Aug 22, 2022, 12:00 PM

I took one of the helicopter tours of the Grand Canyon last year. It was an incredible experience. My wife and I were on the front row beside the pilot. The tours are not cheap, but I agree they are worth the price. However, I plan to take one anytime I ever go to Las Vegas.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Where ever you go, enjoy the trip.

Take her on a fishing trip to Alaska or the Bahamas! Both would be romantic and you could fish too!

You could ask her to plan the whole trip to what she wants to do. It’s always a great trip when I tell my wife to plan everything & she always includes more things Like to do because it’s her idea.

Praying for healing for her right now.

Pretty good fishing off Key West. Plus you can snorkel and scuba dive. Allegiant has super cheap flights out of Asheville. Explore your way up to Miami and back.

Consider Cape Cod. Wife and I visited several years ago and had a great time. We're not into the partying scene, either. Stayed in Chatham, MA. Provincetown, Nantucket ,and Martha's Vineyard are worth a visit. Spending a few days there was not nearly as expensive you one might expect.

Aug 22, 2022, 10:28 AM

Option II

Key West IMO is way overrated, especially if you don't drink. The beaches are not very good there. The weather in October would be nice, but unless you're gonna fish a lot or make a day trip to Dry Tortugas NP, I would recommend Option II.

It depends on how much time you have, but the cheapest flights would be to Vegas. Personally, I don't gamble or drink, so Vegas is just not my cup of tea, but it offers a cheap entry and exit to a lot of pretty country.

Definitely do the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Go early in October and carry warm clothing. You can hit up Bryce Canyon and Zion NP in Utah too.

I moved to Lexington, KY last year and depending what y’all are into, I recommend people give it a try. Bourbon tours, Oct 7-29 they have the Keeneland horse races, food is great, it’s only an hour from Cincinnati and Louisville which both have great things to go see and do. Great hiking spots and caves to explore, that time of year is when we got here, beautiful weather. Some really cool other horse parks.

Aug 22, 2022, 10:41 AM

We did the Vegas, Grand Canyon, Zion National Park loop a few years back. Fantastic trip.

Took in a few shows in LV, and we threw in the Hoover ### as a side trip from LV. Well worth it.

Went rafting in the Colorado, not sure what that is like right now with drought, so maybe a helicopter tour is a better play.

Zion NP is absolutely beautiful, and that time of year might be less crowded. Sign up early for Angels Landing if you are feeling adventurous...you'll never forget it.

Aug 22, 2022, 10:49 AM

I agree with some below…KW is overrated unless you are taking the excursions mentioned. Several have mentioned taking her fishing…but unless she has been and you know she actually enjoys it, I would avoid it…this trip is to help her heal, not figure out a way for you to still salvage your fishing trip…

I’ve been to Vegas, but never the Grand Canyon, so I can’t comment on that…would imagine it could be a good trip for quiet reflection and just to take in the natural beauty of the area.

Re: Vacation help! Wifey is asking me to forego the annual OBX

Aug 22, 2022, 11:16 AM

We have done both and between the two, go out west. Get out of Vegas ASAP and head into Utah where you can do the big National Parks and head down to the northern rim of the Grand Canyon(much less crowded and nice drive heading down from Utah into Arizona). Aspen tree are beautiful that time of year and might be snowing. It was when we went. It is a day trip down to the northern rim, so you will probably won't to come back from where you spent the night in Utah, as lodging is scant on the northern rim. Whatever you
decide, have a great trip.

I would go to Portsmouth New Hampshire

Aug 22, 2022, 12:04 PM

it is lovely that time of year, and it is dirt cheap and liek no where else on the eastern Seaboard.. The food is amazing and cheap, especially if you like seafood. Every restaurant is 5 star along the water, but with 3 star prices. The beer selections are amazing, and you can a drive up the Maine Coast. I am not kidding, it is one of the most underrated places and October is a great time to go. it is also a great town to catch a Clemson game, the bar scene is to die for.

Re: Vacation help! Wifey is asking me to forego the annual OBX

Aug 22, 2022, 12:06 PM

We have done both. The best part of Key West is driving across the 7 mile bridge to get there. The water is beautiful. The sunset festival was fun but it is very alcohol fueled or at least it was the last time we went there and that was probably 20-22 years ago.
We went to Hoover ### and the Grand Canyon in December 2019 after the Playoff game against Ohio St. It was on my bucket list and we were there for the game so it was a no brainer for us to go. There was snow around the rim and that was beautiful but I think it would be a lot better in early October. Out of those two I would definitely pick the Grand Canyon.

Two other great trips I would recommend and they are opposite ends in the cost spectrum. 1 - drive up to the Finger Lakes region of NY. Watkins Glen state park is a fairly aggressive but beautiful hike. Main attraction there is the wineries but the scenery would be the draw for non-drinkers. 2 - Fly to Anchorage and drive up to Denali and take the park tour. You will see caribou, grizzly bears and moose in the wild. Might be the best trip I have ever taken. In early October you might even see the northern lights but I’m not sure how cold it will be. We went the first week in August and it was in the 70s in the daytime.

Key West meh. Kinda disappointed in the whole Florida Keys to be honest.

Grand Canyon - Big hole, not much to see after a few minutes IMHO.

Highly recommend some of our National Parks. Glacier National Park is one of the most beautiful places I've been and I've traveled extensively.

I suggest the New England coast. Cape Cod area is great. Spend a day in Newport to see how the other half lived,. A few days in Boston would be fantastic. Might even get to see the Tigers play. I spent a little time at Lake Winnipesaukee once with my dear wife and it was great. New Hampshire is a beautiful state. Marine is also a great visit. Islamorada for fishing. You can scoot down to Key West for a day to see the sights. Some of the best inshore fishing in the US. If interested, I have a great guide that has been guiding since the 70’s. Lots of great places to stay for all budgets.

If you can go to Bahamas, take your wife to Shannas Cove on Cat Island. One of the most beautiful beaches and very relaxing. Only 5 rooms at the place, so you’ll feel like you have the place to yourselves. My wife and I have been fortunate to travel a lot and I travel for work. Shannas Cove is one of the most beautiful places we’ve been to.

We did the Vegas-Arizona-Utah loop about five years ago....

Aug 22, 2022, 8:19 PM

Flew to Vegas, because that was the cheapest. After a night in Vegas, drove down to Hoover ###(45 minute drive, well worth it). Then on to Sedona, AZ, which was our home base for four days...a lot of interesting stuff in the area. One day we took a small plane up to the west rim of the Canyon, them a copter down to the Colorado River, then a pontoon ride up the river...pretty cool perspective of the Canyon.

After leaving Sedona, drove up to the south entrance of the Grand Canyon, then out the east entrance.

A couple hours north of the east entrance is Antelope Canyon...do not miss this...my favorite part of the trip. It isn't a national park, only because it is on the Navajo Reservation, and they take you on a two hour guided tour for only $20 per person! It is a photographer's dream!

Nearby is Horshoe Bend...pretty neat view of the Colorado River, but it is about a quarter mile walk to the viewing point.

Then, drove on into Utah, and toured Bryce Canyon NP and Zion NP...Bryce Canyon is really interesting and unique!

Finally made our way back to Vegas...total trip about 11 days. We did this in late September...still pretty warm, but not bad...humidity fairly low. I really enjoyed some of of the hole in the wall restaurants we discovered along the way!
