UVA Shooting...Ongoing investigation...CTE

Nov 14, 2022, 9:36 AM

Could be another Phillip Adams situation, where a player just loses control of their mind after football. Will be interesting to see to see how this shakes out. Thoughts and prayers for safety for the UVA community.

Re: UVA Shooting...Ongoing investigation...CTE

Nov 14, 2022, 9:46 AM

You may be right but seems reckless on your part to suggest it without any evidence. I might suggest it is the side effects of prescribed medications or perhaps a mental break which happens to folks who have never played football. I would also suggest he could have a demon which will upset some to suggest such a thing but you cant believe in a God/Angles without also believing in Satan/Demons.

It seemed to me that he was making things up just to demonstrate that making things up is easy without facts. To make a point, not to put out actual theories.

I think it's a somewhat fair criticism. But, it just seems strange for a former teammate to go rogue on what were likely friends.

It's a saddening situation.

A Demon?!?? You are saying he may be possessed by a Demon? Like the Exorcist? It’s reckless according to you to theorize CTE could be the reason, but it’s more logical to think demonic possession?? O M G!! And they say there isn’t Cult like behavior on Tigernet! Thanks for the laugh sir!

He's had a lot of issues growing up

Nov 14, 2022, 9:48 AM

dad left when he was 5. He got in a lot of fights in school growing up. Grew up in some projects, at least in Richmond, Va for a time.

He's always had some anger issues it appears.

Article on Fox had his background story. This isn’t CTE, he’s just a bad person.

UVA bio on footbal site:

AT VIRGINIA
2018 – Did not appear in any games.

HIGH SCHOOL AND PERSONAL
Played linebacker and running back at Petersburg High School for head coach Michael Scott … earned honorable mention all-conference honors as a senior … spent first three years of high school at Varina High School where he earned honorable mention all-conference as a freshman and second-team accolades as a sophomore and junior … member of the National Honor Society … National Technical Honor Society … president of Key Club … president of Jobs for Virginia Grads Program … named Student of the Year as a freshman and sophomore at Varina … son of Margo Ellis and Christopher Jones, Sr. … has three siblings, Eliza, Darrius and Varian.

Newsweek references a paywalled article (Richmond Times-Dispatch):

As the manhunt continues, a profile of Jones by the Richmond Times-Dispatch has surfaced, describing his
"fractured path to graduation" from Petersburg High School.

It started by saying that friends wanted to know why Jones was “so upset” as they rehearsed graduation.

“Chris Jones was the only one among them who would attend the University of Virginia in the fall,” the newspaper reported.

According to that story, Jones’ graduation came after a troubled upbringing, including “a fractured family, school fighting and suspensions, and one that began in Richmond, in two-bedroom apartments in the Essex Village and Mosby Court housing complexes.”

A 2018 Richmond Times-Dispatch profile on Jones noted he grew up in Richmond's Essex Village and Mosby Court communities before his parents divorced [when he was 5].

“My dad and me were really close. It just hurt me when he had to leave,” he told the Richmond Times-Dispatch in a 2018 interview. “That was one of the most traumatic things that happened to me in my life. I didn’t understand why he left."

He told the paper that getting in fights at school was a way to relieve stress.

His family moved to Varina for his middle school years. He moved to Petersburg to live with his grandmother in 2016 for a "new start."

“He always had strong goals. He was ambitious, but his anger simply got in the way,” mentor Xavier Richardson told the RTD in 2018. "Many people, particularly some of the people he will be going to college with, come from a place of privilege. But I try to help him understand that he has been able to succeed despite his obstacles, and he can thrive from them."

And CTE had nothing to do with it. The players were in a drama class. They went on a field trip. He waited for the bus to come back and ambushed them. A cowardly act. Seems like his brained worked fine to plan out and follow through killing people he knew.

Well, I guess it seems like a pertinent topic seeing that it will impact the future of our cash cow for the University.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What specifically is it to you? Your username has CTE in it

Nov 14, 2022, 11:14 AM

Does that represent chronic traumatic encephalopathy or is it just a coincidence?

Also, while the 100M or so revenue the athletic department takes in is not inconsequential, the total university budget is $1.3B. On top of that the athletic department contributes very little to the general university budget; most of that revenue is used to support its own operations. So, no I would not characterize football as the university’s “cash cow”. To be honest that comes across as the language of someone who has an agenda.

Re: Are you the author of this document? Is that your

Nov 14, 2022, 11:33 AM

No. I'm not the author.

Academic giving follows athletic giving. And if this was not assumed, then Clemson wouldn't advertise football on every slide of its TV commercial promoting the school.

CTE stands for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, I understand that.

I have no agenda. It is becoming increasingly obvious that the game faces and existential risk and 1000's if not 10,000's of future lawsuits. There is one being heard this week: Gee v. NCAA.

The university’s commercials were created to be shown

Nov 14, 2022, 11:46 AM

During football and basketball games ; that egg came after the chicken. Yes, athletics helped us grow to the level that we’ve achieved as a university, but so has engineering prowess, military tradition, scientific research and a myriad of other great characteristics of the school. Gameday is about much more than just the game; it’s a family reunion every weekend. If something were to change the way football is played we would adapt accordingly.

You seem to be obfuscating here though and avoiding my central question; why did you create a user name with CTE in it?

just how bad head trauma from football is, even with the safety measures in place.

I predict that we will look back one day and be shocked at just how significant these head injuries are, even when there are no obvious signs at the time.

People think it's as simple as no concussion, no problem, but it's far more nuanced than that.

smh... is this really the conversation we should be having where amateur sleuths are trying to guess the motivation for this horrific crime or, do you think maybe instead we should just be praying for the lives lost, the families impacted, and for the university and Tony Elliot specifically, who is going to have a massive amount of personal involvement in trying to deal with this and a heartbroken football team and Charlottesville community?

I think and would hope we are all better than this...
