Well it is all just rumors right now... and even if all this is being discussed, it could change.
But no way these schools will sit back while SEC/B1G keep renegotiating contracts 2 times before our crappy GoR expires.

Seems like a stretch that the Big12 will survive over the ACC but in this new CFB world nothing really makes sense anymore.

I can see some of these happening but one thing is for sure - the ACC is sleeping at the wheel and it’s just a matter of time before we veer off into incoming traffic.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

IMO, there will ultimately be (4) superconfences.

1

Apr 14, 2023, 2:16 PM

Split up in (4) conferences into two major divisions (like AFC/NFC) with playoffs to weed out teams in each side, ultimately leading to a "superbowl" of sorts. 64-80 teams to battle for the "1A" trophy. The rest of college teams will set up as needed, kind of like an NIT for remaining programs.

Probably 5 years or less, in my opinion.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The NIT would be those meaningless/irrelevant bowl games.***

That scenario makes as much sense...

8

Apr 14, 2023, 10:50 AM

... as any of the other 20 or so scenarios (hyperbole) I've seen.

I still maintain that the B1G and SEC are not through expanding. I don't know who's going where. And, I certainly don't know when it will be announced. (Remember, I predicted Clemson and FSU to SEC would be announced before April of this year. So, clearly, I am not a prophet when it comes to conference expansion.)

It is possible that the hold up in the timing was the B1G getting a new commissioner. And, now that they have one who has extensive ties to CBS, the ball may start rolling quickly.

But, it sure looks like:
1. PAC 12 is toast.
2. ACC is toast.
3. Big 12 may survive as "3rd major conference" or, at worst "best of the rest."
4. SEC and B1G will become the bullies on the playground and each will be claiming, "We're #1."

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

One thing is for sure. I will never chant SEC.***

Re: That scenario makes as much sense...

Apr 14, 2023, 10:59 AM [ in reply to That scenario makes as much sense... ]

Yeah I think BigXII did a decent job setting themselves up to be the 3rd conference though they took some teams in this last round that may have made them the next ACC. Had they waited, they could have been in line to be closer to what the SEC/B1G is building but with all these G5 teams they took, they look like they will be a solid but 2nd tier.
I think the top teams will come down to Fox and ESPN driving B1G and SEC into turf battles.
You know Fox wants some of the South east... almost all of the National Championships are won there.
Will the SEC let that happen or will it play defense?
I dont think it will let Clemson and FSU go to the B1G without a fight if the B1G comes calling because Clem/FSU has won 3 of the last 10 National Championships.. but we will see.
It certainly seems like there are a number of schools aligning themselves to make a move and it appears they are close to getting the numbers together to get around the GoR.

Re: That scenario makes as much sense...

1

Apr 14, 2023, 2:41 PM

Just a bit of information....unless the B1G drastically changes its admission requirements, only UNC, UVA, Duke and Ga. Tech would qualify. Currently a school has to be a member of the AAU to be admitted and they share in the Big Ten Consortium which controls around $1B in research funds annually.

Re: That scenario makes as much sense...

Apr 17, 2023, 11:08 AM [ in reply to Re: That scenario makes as much sense... ]

There's some speculation that the B1G has become more receptive to softening that stance ever since Nebraska was expelled from the AAU.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There isn't going to be anything with only the former SEC and Big 12 playing for it all.

1

Apr 14, 2023, 2:21 PM [ in reply to That scenario makes as much sense... ]

There are currently 5 power conferences. That doesn't work so well in a playoff system, so we will need to create an even number of "superconfences". 64-80 teams.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

20 years ago I had drew out the super conference concept on

Apr 17, 2023, 11:30 AM

Makes a weird sort of sense

1

Apr 14, 2023, 11:04 AM

If everybody jumps ship, then nobody has to pay to leave the ACC.

The question has always been "How does the media powers make more money?" If ESPN thought they'd make more money keeping the ACC whole, then they'd renegotiate that deal.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have no idea how accurate or reliable that is, but it's

1

Apr 14, 2023, 11:14 AM

very easy to see it playing out that way. It's obvious that the current conference structure is not sustainable going forward and that Clemson and FSU for sure are looking to get out of the ACC.

So this looks like the scenario playing out if it continued down this path (which of course it all could change). A few of these are listed twice in possible locations.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Guy who was all over Texas/OU leaving BigXII...

1

Apr 14, 2023, 11:37 AM

This doesn't make much sense. Why would the SEC only go up to 18, when the Big Ten goes to 20? Why would the SEC watch the Big Ten nsje significant inroads into the southern market, and not expand their own footprint?

It would make much more sense to add NC State and Virginia Tech as well, rather than just conceding the Mid-Atlantic market to the Big Ten.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Guy who was all over Texas/OU leaving BigXII...

Apr 14, 2023, 3:02 PM

You're looking at it through the lens of some big master plan. There isn't one. I believe Sankey when says he is just taking it as it comes. The SEC doesn't give 2 cents what the B1G does as far as adding teams goes. The SEC is willing to accept teams that add value to the conference. They have absolutely nothing to prove to the B1G. Some of the southern teams clearly represent a value to the B1G from a location and footprint standpoint, that do nothing for the SEC. Outside of perhaps FSU and Clemson, the SEC wouldn't care if the B1G took every other team in the ACC.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Guy who was all over Texas/OU leaving BigXII...

Apr 14, 2023, 11:45 AM

I listened to all that "24-team superconferences" talk as far back as 15 years ago and figured it would never happen. Maybe it still won't, but there is enough rustling in the bushes to make me think it could be true in a season or two.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not sure why NCState and VTech

1

Apr 14, 2023, 11:51 AM

would go to the Big XII instead of the SEC in this scenario. SEC could gain NC And VA footprints to battle with B1G there. Then Big XII gets BC and Cuse.

Other than that, I could definitely see this as a possibility.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This doesn't make any sense from the Big Ten's perspective.

The Big Ten would be much better off with Oregon and Washington than any of those four schools.

Maybe even Stanford and Cal makes more sense.

Re: If this were to happen...

Not if Clemson and FSU were to approach the SEC.

While UNC, UVA, GT, and Miami separately approached the Big Ten.

And then NC State and Va Tech got word of this and approached the Big XII to make sure they had a safe(ish) landing spot.
