Unintended Consequences of NIL

Aug 13, 2021, 3:44 PM

Is anyone else concerned about the unintended negative consequences of NIL on team harmony? DJ has already signed with BoJangles and Dr. Pepper. There's a rumor he might also sign with Delta Airlines. With all of these NIL contracts how will he find time to practice football? How will his success off the field impact the other players on the field? It is one thing for a 22 year old (or older) pro athlete to get huge dollar NIL contract but I worry about how an 18-22 year old college player will be able to handle his own NILs much less his college teammates' NILs. It doesn't look to me like a good situation. But if anyone can make it work, Dabo can based on the character of the players he recruits.

I suspect DJ knows he will need to keep his OL buddies stocked up with Dr. Pepper and Bojangles!

How about in the locker room? Wide receivers know that the number of balls that DJ throws them impacts their ability to make plays and subsequently their potential NIL contract $ next year.
I believe we do have high character guys in general, but they are still human. I think there are many layers of unintended consequences headed college football's way (esp. in recruiting) I say this disappointingly.

and what about the Right Guard that people only know his number. What's his NIL worth? Yet, he could feel left out totally. Maybe doesn't block for the $$$$$$$ making QB as well as he could. Joe Namath couldn't complete passes laying on his back!!! I'm not really talking about Clemson here, I'm talking about College Football in General. I think it will eventually ruin the sport. But I don't watch the NFL, NBA, very little MLB, NEVER watch a NASCAR race, so I suppose I'll end up having to give up watching college football one day too. It's called greed, and created by people who care about nothing but money. It's a very sad situation.......

What about the right guard? He wants a career in the NFL. He knows the way to get a contract is to excel in college. He knows if he lets DL blow by him and get to QB he won't get a contract with NFL. He knows we don't know his name, but the NFL scouts do. He's playing to impress them, not us.

I get your point. I think DJ is high character so nothing to worry about there.

However, take hypothetical Johnny Fivestar who is the number one QB and number one overall recruit in the 2024 class. He signs with a blue blood school and then signs NIL sponsorships with Gatorade, Papa John's, Grumpy's Bail Bonds, along with several others. He is balancing class work, NIL negotiations, practice, girlfriends, homework, whatever. Previously mentioned blue blood school also signed Ricky Highfourstar in the same class. Johnny 5 has maxed himself out and doesn't have to stress because he now has more money than his entire family has ever seen.
Meanwhile, Ricky is busting his tail and only focused on football. Guess who wins out in the long run.

I have no idea how all this stuff will work out.

But, in the case you are mentioning, I don't think it will be a problem.

Heisman candidate QB signs several NIL contracts with various companies. QB knows that the real money will be with his first NFL contract. He knows he has to play well for the draft. Every slot he moves in the draft may be more than all his NIL contracts combined.

Companies who sign QB top contract know that he needs to play well in order for their investment to be worthwhile. They aren't going to be calling him up on Tuesday night telling him to skip practice on Wednesday because they need to shoot a commercial. They aren't going to be shooting commercials at 2:00 AM so that he won't miss practice.

The companies that sign players to large NIL contracts want their clients to excel on the field all season long.

The last thing Bojangle's wants is for DJ to start spending his money and saying, "To heck with football, I've got my money. Just waiting on NFL."

(I think I read that DJ has already shot his DR. Pepper commercials and did it in one afternoon a week or so ago.)

I understand your concerns and I share them to agree, but I’m going to remain positive that the negative consequences won’t be as dramatic as we might fear.

The issue of discrepancies in pay and popularity (i.e. endorsements), is a part of life in major professional sports. Somehow those players seem to work out any issues when the pay gap between the lower paid and the higher paid players can be tens of millions of dollars.

Also, the players who have the most NIL opportunities will likely hire agents who will manage all of those negotiations for them. The player might have a quick 15 minute chat with their manager each week and that’s about it. Plus any time they would spend doing commercials, talk shows, signing autographs or whatever shouldn’t take too much of their time, and the coaches and staff can help players manage that time.

My bigger concern is overtime the larger schools, in larger cities, with a larger fan bases and larger donor base will basically be able to buy the best team just like the New York Yankees. I think we’re starting to see that play out already. That’s my bigger concern.
