Happy to see Brownell raising the stakes

Jun 5, 2022, 10:56 AM

I don’t see his comments on the school’s commitment as pumping sunshine up Neff’s ###. He knows Neff will fire him in a second after the season is over without drastic improvement. I could be wrong, but I think he’s just owning the situation now.

I'm not so sure that it was Brownell who raised the stakes. Certainly, Neff did - and Brownell is acknowledging that his job is on the line..... and no more excuses.

What are we suppose to own? Results better than historical average or results better than the support given? Or should we simply own your view that hope is a plan? Please be specific

From the fan standpoint, hope is actually the only plan. It is the very nature of fandom. And Brownell has denied us hope for the better part of a decade as it became completely apparent the had neither vision nor skills to elevate the program. This modest new investment in assistants is smoke screen. If these were the guys he needed he should have gotten them years ago. We’re not talking budget busting salaries. Someone should answer for why this incredibly modest investment supposedly represents a seismic shift in program support. Attendance and therefore revenue has steadily declined under Brownell. A performance turnaround would have more than offset these new expenditures. Neff has had a direct role with basketball before becoming AD. There is no reason hiring Brownell’s old buddy for a $100k more than the last guy is the puzzle piece and if it is, anyone who denied this request in the past should step down for negligence. This is last straws for a guy with nowhere else to go.

There are some on tnet who believe, like a particular political party, that the solution to a problem is to throw money at it. Generally with government programs you get marginal improvement and are stuck with an increase in spending for a one time improvement. Such could be the case with our basketball problem. We may see some marginal improvement but until the head of the program changes we will have a marginal program. If the same philosophy continues and we continue to throw more and more money at it with small results we will be stuck in the same place ad infinitum. A change at the top is needed.
That is my opinion. Others may have a different view and i respect that.

Why do you care if results are better than historical average? Why is that relevant?

I’ll repeat a previous question you never answered - if historical average was .300 and CBB was .350, would that be acceptable?

Take our baseball team as an example. Our history is riddled with winning seasons, regionals, super regionals and a few CWS appearances. 40+ wins were expected and almost always achieved. For whatever reason our baseball program should have a high floor and ceiling based on demonstrated success. This is why Monte had a short rope as everything being roughy equal the poor performance falls on the coach

The flip side is our basketball program. For whatever reason our program has always been below average. There have been short bursts of success always followed by a coach landing a better gig or probation. The thought is with all other factors being ~ constant, a good coach would be better than history and a bad coach would perform worse than history, So firing a coach who seems to everything in the right way (graduation, etc) and performs better than avg for the program is not the lever to pull to get better results as based on history will only lead to a constant coaching churn. On the other hand providing the coach with additional support as Neff has indicated should lead to more wins which leads to tourney invites

So you still aren't answering the statistical question, I see.

Your stance is the problem. Being "better than history" is not enough.

acknowledged and is on board with the make the NCAA tournament next season or else expectation.

Both Neff and Brownell want more for Clemson basketball.

Jun 5, 2022, 1:27 PM

Neff’s letter was very clear on that point.

I hope he has a great season but the lack of experience at guard makes me wonder how he will manage that.

Yeah, one who never has been the main cog at guard before in Chase Hunter, and the other is a new to the program in a transfer from a bad BC team who put up bellow average numbers mostly in Galloway. How much better does that make the team for sure?
