UNCheat possible sanctions

Another good piece from the News and Observer regarding the UNCheat academic scandal. Most of their supporters have used two defenses:
1. Everyone does it, we just got caught. (so lame and childish) 2. It's an academic issue, not an athletic scandal. Therefore the NCAA should stay out of it.
In this article, reporters Joseph Neff and Dan Kane look at other academic scandals and the resulting action taken by the NCAA. For the most part, the NCAA did take action. There is no similar case because "The athletic and academic misconduct at UNC-Chapel Hill dwarfs related scandals at other universities." Great examples given where schools get years of probation for just a few athletes involved with school sponsored academic impropriety. Given that UNCheat had a minimum of 3100 athletes involved and likely many more, there is nothing to compare it to. If 18 cheating athletes resulted in 4 years of probation, what does 3100 get you? Doing the math that should be 689 years of probation! Death penalty?

Just a couple of notes: Its 3,100 students, not athletes. The report found 50% of the enrollment in those classes were student-athletes.
The problem with the NCAA doing anything to UNC is that the NCAA can only decide eligibility, not whether a class is valid. The university decides if the grades earned in that class are accredited. The report is the academic counselors for the AD knew these classes were fluff, and therefore funneled their at risk students into them. It smells of corruption, but until UNC says the classes were fraudulent and repeals the grades, then they were legitimate classes. And so far, UNC has not said the grades earned in those classes aren't legitimate university grade points. Until then, the NCAA, nor the ACC, can't declare any of their athletes ineligible, nor can they retroactively declare students ineligible for a class they took in undergrad that was legitimate in the eyes of the university.

Ok, I'll grant you the first point. Even if it's just half of the 3100. I negotiate down and settle for just 300 years of probation. That should be enough. Death penalty for 5 years and then once athletic programs restart, 300 years of probation, plus an extra year tacked on by the ACC so 301 years total!
Seriously, I know it's impossible to predict the NCAA's actions. They seem to be all of the place lately. But there are reasons to believe the NCAA may have the stones to take serious action against UNCheat.
1. Penn State. That was unprecedented too - personal conduct of a horrible former assistant coach. It wasn't a normal situation and could have been argued it was outside of their jurisdiction, but the NCAA did take decisive punitive action against the university. Later reduced, so who knows.
2. Just citing the article, they state "given the number of university employees involved, the number of athletes and the length of the scheme, most observers expect serious sanctions."
3. From the FSU academic scandal under Bowden, the NCAA final report contained this statement. “Academic fraud is among the most egregious of N.C.A.A. violations,” the NCAA report states. “The committee was concerned with the large number of student-athletes involved in the fraud and especially by the fact that individuals within the institution’s (academic advisers) unit were involved. The committee was further troubled by the fact that there were warning signs indicating that academic improprieties were taking place, but these warning signs were, for the most part, ignored.”

three years in football and basketball so make them play with walkons. I don't want to see them get the death penalty, I want to see them watch their teams get wiped every game.

Taking away scholarships are putting them on probation does very little to correct this issue Now if the NCAA really wants to get their attention and send a message take away all TV money (ESPN, ACC) for 3 years $$$$$$$$$ talks loud
