NC and Duke got where they are in basketball today by buying their way into it. NC State tried it but was too dumb to make it work for them. In fact they are still trying. McGuire was bought by SC to pay for and funnel basketball players from New York.

Yeah, but his players were caught shaving points, selling items (shoes tickets etc), falsifying academic records and grade changes etc. It happened over five or so years.
We complain about Lennon v Ford for our next 20+ years of wandering the wasteland but NC State is still out in the nuclear fallout of their mess. They ran Herb out which has been their only good spot.
I think after SMU and SanFran (self imposed penalty), NC State received the maximum non-death penalty possible. They have gone from NC title contender to not finishing tied or behind the historically worst ACC basketball program 7 of the last 11 years (Clemson)
And they are on probation again too....

I was told that in the 60's, that SC was recruiting Lew Alcindor (Kareem), that he was asked: "what will you people do with $10,000?"
Alcindor realized what a racist place the south still was, so he went to UCLA instead.
Not vouching for authenticity, this was the story I was told by a former SC basketball player (in the 70's).

We tried it under Tates Locke, and he paid for a bunch of players back in the 1970’s.
They all drove Monte Carlos except Skip Wise (Mercury Cougar XR7).
We lost Moses Malone and we offered him a house with paid utilities for his mother and family in VA.
Lefty outbid us and signed him to Maryland, but he signed to play in the ABA before enrolling.
We lost Skip Wise to the ABA (after 1st team All-ACC freshman year).
We definitely got put on probation! UNC and others made sure we got caught!
We did have a good basketball ?? team though, but it was not worth it……
Recruiting for Basketball has always been tough!
Remember, we lost Pistol Pete Marivich when we fired his dad as our coach!

Actually, Press Maverich was hired as an assistant and HC in waiting at NC State. But Pete didn't have the grades to get into State because of the 800 rule so Press took the job at LSU where Pete could play.
