The question no one is asking on conference realignment

Jul 12, 2022, 9:43 AM

When are the B1G and SEC going i consider dropping schools from their conference to make room for others?

If the target number for each conference is 20, and the conferences are about to max out, there are likely better options out there than current members. For example, if the SEC (at 16 with Oklahoma and Texas) adds Clemson, FSU, and Miami along with one other school, they'll be at that 20 mark. If other potential schools are sitting out there ready to join (e.g. Notre Dame, UNC, UVA, VT, Ok State, Baylor, TCU, Louisville, Oregon, Washington, UCF, NC State, Kansas, K State, Iowa St, etc), why would the SEC try to hold on to schools like Vandy, Missouri, and South Carolina?

[Pull pin, toss, enjoy.]

I'm sure that the B1G has some to consider dropping as well (e.g. Northwestern, Illinois, etc).

You cant drop teams.. the only way to realistically do that is to have all of the power teams leave the conference then make a new conference without the dead weight teams.

No, they actually CAN drop teams.

Yes. Pretty sure the old Big East booted Temple because their football program was one of the worst in the NCAA.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They need the USC's and Vandy's as fodder for the top

Jul 12, 2022, 9:55 AM

to look good.

Years ago...

Temple was kicked-out of the Big East, Marshall was kicked-out of the MAC due to NCAA violations, and Virginia Tech was kicked-out of the Metro.

I think the likelihood of it occurring again, barring some kind of flagrant or egregious act, is remote.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Why would someone need to be kicked out?

Jul 12, 2022, 10:01 AM

Where are you getting this 20 number from? I have seen people say there could be as many as 24 teams in each conference. There are no rules to this.

I could see 24 teams split into 4 divisions of 6 teams each. Not sure how that would work with conference championships, maybe a 4 team conference playoff?

If both SEC and Big was going to 20 teams each, and if they made a decision to drop their weakest teams that has never been relevant, the coot bragging would be O V E R!!!

Uhhh...no it wouldn't !!!

They would find something else to squawk about because...well...that's just what they do.

Don’t coots cluck instead of squawk?

No one is asking because it is not a possibility. FWIW no one is asking if the coots would have a parade if they won a Natty in football

I have a better chance of winning the lottery four weeks in a row than if either the SEC or B1G will drop a school. No how, no way that happens

My Friend, I'd be very surprised to see involuntary

exits, which IMO would provoke a backlash the likes of which would be unimaginable.

Rather, I wouldn't be surprised to see some voluntary realignment whereby trade-offs occur with a few programs agreeing to join another conference. Say, for example, Kentucky and Louisville moving to the BIG. IMO there may be greater probability for that scenario, if there are movements to 24 teams.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think the goal should be to accumulate a number of teams...

Jul 13, 2022, 9:09 AM

in multiples of 4. 24 is a natural number but imo, 16 teams in each of 4 conferences is a natural situation for setting up the ultimate playoff system.

4 pod/ conference with 4 teams/pod. Pod winners represent a final four playoff within each conference which demand TV viewers. Those could be home games for the ranking team. Conference champs meet post season in The Playoff while bowl games continue.

The drawback is that only 64 teams would be eligible. 24 is the next increment which fits that model ensuring that 96 teams are included in the base.

This should be math not handled by a selection committee. I respect opinions but math is much superior and no conference is worthy of two teams. In a perfect world, right?

However, I suspect the B1G and SEC are working against such organization and order.

Perhaps it won’t be the SEC/B1G that do this, but the OTHER conferences in an effort to remain financially competitive with the big boys.

ACC minus Wake, Syracuse, BC, GT would raise the per team payout to $50,000,000.

You are bumping some big TV markets there like Boston , NY and Atlanta. Not sure the total TV money would stay the same.

Except for Atlanta, those cities are not engaged in college football. And Atlanta is an SEC city.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Imo, this is not about quality football.

Jul 13, 2022, 8:59 AM

It's about spreading the geography to attract more views and includes at least one team from a variety of states. Texas and AnM both have huge fan followings. Vandy does not, neither does Duke, Scar does...so the formula for picking and choosing schools isn't based on power (W/L) of the football team but fan following any particular team.

However, there is a relationship between being successful on the field and viewership but there are other factors involved.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don’t see either conference dropping a team.

Jul 13, 2022, 9:05 AM

It could happen but it’s extremely unlikely.

They will simply be made an offer they can't refuse...
