UGA/Oklahoma debate only exists because of SEC bias.

Dec 4, 2018, 11:19 AM

Without it, this would not even be something than anyone would talk about.

The "eye test" really just means "embracing bias."

Oklahoma had wins over #14, 15, 22 and 25 of the final AP poll
UGA had wins over #10, 16 and 24
Those are comparable.

Oklahoma went 12-1 and beat every team they played
UGA went 11-2 and did not beat two of them
Obvious advantage for Oklahoma

Oklahoma won their conference on the field.
UGA lost their conference on the field
Obvious advantage for Oklahoma

UGA has an advantage in recruiting rankings (subjective)
Oklahoma has a Heisman Finalist (subjective)

The only reason that people argue for UGA in the playoffs is because they are already ready to hand Bama the title. So because UGA lost to them in close fashion, that must prove they are close behind, and therefore, one of the best 4 teams. That. is. dumb.

I actually agreed with letting Bama in last year, using the exact same metrics. Bama didn't win a conference title, but they only had one loss (compared to two from OSU), and their wins were more impressive and their loss was far less damning than the other possible choices.

UGA compared to Oklahoma this year is a totally different universe than Bama compared to Ohio State/Wisconsin last year.

I don’t think it’s a “bias” necessarily. I think it’s an honest assessment to say that UGA is a better football team than Oklahoma. They have a good offense and a much better defense.

It comes down to whether or not you believe the “best” teams should be chosen or the “most deserving”. Choosing which teams are “best” is way too subjective so it should be the most deserving which hands down was Oklahoma.

The committee got it right but I don’t think those lobbying for UGA were biased. If Kirk Herbstreit was going to be biased don’t you think it would be toward his alma mater which was 12-1 and Big 10 champ?

I don't mean intentional bias. People don't realize it.***

This isn't about best vs. most deserving.

Dec 4, 2018, 11:46 AM [ in reply to Re: UGA/Oklahoma debate only exists because of SEC bias. ]

To say that Georgia is better than Oklahoma is not based on relevant statistics or on-field performance. Why is it assumed that Georgia is one of the best four teams simply because they played one great game against Alabama? Syracuse played one great game against us, are they a top 4 team? Army played Oklahoma close, are they a top 4 team?

Recency bias is huge as it relates to Georgia. Yes, they played a great game against Alabama. But what if Alabama really isn't as amazing/unbeatable/perfect as the media has insisted all year? What if Alabama's close game against Georgia is less about how good Georgia is, and instead, a statement about how Alabama isn't as good as we've assumed?

We can't ignore the fact that Georgia lost to LSU by 20 points. They got blown out. It wasn't even close. Does a top 4 team really lose a game like that? Alabama, Notre Dame, and Clemson are all clearly great teams this year. They are undefeated and have won the games in front of them.

Oklahoma and Ohio State both have one loss, and won their conference. That would put them ahead of Georgia, even if Georgia just had the one loss to Alabama. But Georgia has TWO losses, one by nearly 3 touchdowns. You can't ignore that, even if you try to oversimplify the argument by using "eye test" and all of that crap.

The season is 12 games for a reason: it provides a large enough body of work to tell us who the best teams are. And Georgia isn't one of them.

I agree with all that. Personally I would pick UGA to win though against Oklahoma. They have the speed on defense to contain Kyler Murray and we know Oklahoma's defense will give up a ton of points. UGA was able to run it on Alabama which means Oklahoma wouldn't have a prayer.

based on statistics that i consider relevant. Maybe you don't consider them relevant. This isn't to say that i believe they deserved a playoff bid, because i don't, but UGA was rated higher in every advanced analytical model that i looked at.

Here is the way I see it. Georgia knew going into the SEC championship game that if they beat Alabama they were in. They blew a 2 TD lead and lost to the backup qb. They nay be one of the best 4 but should not be awarded a do over and another shot at alabama because of a close loss. Our situation was the same. If we win we are in. We won so we got in. If we had lost then we didn't deserve to be there. Same thing with Georgia, they lost they are out.

Also Alabama had not played Georgia last season.
So I think both teams deserved to be in the playoffs
I admit, Ididn’t like Alabama getting in. Still, it made sense.
A championship game that is a repeat of a regular game is dumb and bad for football because ambiguity circles around the place where a clear champion should sit.

The only reason that SEC teams have more top 25 wins is because their rankings are inflated due to them being an SEC team. When UGA beats a Kentucky or Florida, they are beating a team that is only ranked that high because of the SEC. I'm not arguing that the SEC isn't a good conference, maybe the best, only they are always over-hyped and over-ranked .... particularly the middle and lower tier teams.

Re: UGA/Oklahoma debate only exists because of SEC bias.

Dec 4, 2018, 12:37 PM

Look, I only pull for 1 ACC team.

But lets look at the people who evaluate college players for a living, the NFL Scounts. Now when is the last year another conference had more players drafted than the SEC. That is the end all be all to me. The SEC gets the most players drafted every single year. Those are facts. Sure there are the Vandys of the world, but you are kidding yourself to think a middle ACC team is equal to a middle SEC team. Its not even that close either. I personally blame our fraud of a commissioner. We brought in basketball schools and promote their 2-0 starts in football like they are the next big thing. Its all marketing and not reality. Our beloved Tigers are the only respectable team in the ACC.

Are NFL scouts biased? NOPE. I wish they would have been biased towards me but that was not my fate.....so far.

Dec 4, 2018, 4:19 PM [ in reply to Re: UGA/Oklahoma debate only exists because of SEC bias. ]

If we look at it by schools. In the top 10 of most players in NFl it's 5-3 Sec over ACC. Top 40, it's 11-8 for Sec. Sure Sec has edge, but it's not nearly as wide as most would have you believe.

That’s not a metric. That’s your biased opinion. You can’t put a team in over the more deserving team because you think they would win.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You are confusing "would" with "could".

Dec 4, 2018, 1:43 PM [ in reply to Re: UGA/Oklahoma debate only exists because of SEC bias. ]

UGA would be a 3-4 point favorite over OU which would make the game somewhere around 60/40 in favor of UGA. OU could easily win that.

I agree

Dec 4, 2018, 12:49 PM

and we must not forget that the SEC is ESPN's main product. So it didn't surprise me when Herbstriet started talking about this in the 4th quarter of our game Saturday night. ESPN is going to pimp the SEC out any time they can, and they politicked hard for UGA.

It is clear to any sane, normal non-SEC college football fan that UGA with 2 losses and a shot to beat bama in the SEC championship game had their chance and came up short. So Oklahoma was the right choice for #4.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I agree

Dec 4, 2018, 2:15 PM

See this is the part I don’t agree with. Can’t the man just have an opinion without people saying it’s due to what ESPN wants? If that we’re the case then why were other guys on ESPN saying they shouldn’t get in?

I actually think Georgia is better than Oklahoma due to defense. However, I didn’t think Georgia deserved to be in because they already had their chance with Bama. It would be one thing if the game was at Alabama and then maybe you could argue that Georgia beats them on a neutral field. However, the game was already on a neutral field and Georgia knew going into it that they were most likely out with a loss. So why put them down in to play Bama on a different neutral field?
