T's & P's and all that

Oct 18, 2018, 2:01 PM

Good friend has a 19 year old daughter in surgery today. Cancer. Been fighting it for over a year now. Was a week away from starting college when the first symptoms hit. Did 9 months at MD Anderson in Houston... surgeries, chemo, etc, the usual. Thought she maybe had it kicked and came home, but it roared back with a vengeance a few weeks ago. In surgery today to remove a bunch of her stomach, spleen and other stuff. Her choice was have this surgery and if you survive, you'll have a chance to live a while longer, don't have it and die soon.

Helluva thing to deal with at 19. They found her diary a couple days ago and she's naming pallbearers. And she wants to give her college fund to her best friend, so she can continue her education, she's struggling financially. And she's still smiling through the whole thing. All 90 pounds of her. Incredible courage and spirit. I don't think I'd be handling it that well at my age, let alone at 19. I'd probably be angry and screaming Why Me God. Life is just really not fair sometimes.

Remember we exchanged T-mails a while back and you went to school with my cousins in Abbeville back in the day. I think Marion Ann was in your class. Well, she had 3 sons. One of them died in a wreck about 3 or 4 years ago, on his way to work in bad weather, lost control & hit a tree. Then I get a call a few weeks ago, one of her other sons was killed... somebody ran a redlight and crushed him on his motorcycle. Man, she's a mess, she's really been through it. As somebody mentioned on this thread, I don't know how parents cope with that....

This is just too sad also.

Hard for relatives to pass on, but kids? Unbearable I am sure. T's and P's for her and her family.

Dadof is going in for cancer surgery Wednesday next week. So I sorta understand the concerns you're facing.

Hopefully she'll hang on and can get in a good treatment program. Seems like they're getting better and better these days.

If this had happened to me at 19 I would have taken my college fund and spent it all on hookers and blow. And extasy lots of that too

Oct 18, 2018, 3:15 PM

What were the symptoms?

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It all started as a young child, she was apparently born

Oct 18, 2018, 4:53 PM

with some sort of rare eye cancer. I forget the name, this was years ago. I want to say it's hereditary, but not positive. I'll ask. Anyway, they "took care of that" when she was young, best I recall, and she's been fine until about 15 months ago. Started losing weight, no appetite, felt tired, nauseous, etc. I think the alarm bells went off when she threw up and it was dark, as in blood. You know how cancer is - they zap it here, it moves over there. You zig, it zags. Just starts spreading, depending on what type and how aggressive it is.

update & corrections...

Oct 19, 2018, 9:12 AM

Surgery went as well as it could. Only removed 25% of stomach, less than anticipated. Also took out spleen, part of liver & tip of pancreas. The specific cancer is Leiomyosarcoma, and apparently it likes to wrap around everything like octopus tentacles, so no way to get it all. But at least she survived the surgery, that wasn't a given, that's why she was getting her affairs in order. Bad news is that the surgery was necessary because chemotherapy was no longer working, and going forward, all they can do is immunotherapy. They haven't said and I won't ask, but I get the impression her chances for survival are slim. This probably just bought some time.

I was wrong about the eye cancer, it wasn't hereditary, but her Mom had had it, so they knew there was a chance she'd have it, too. She had 12 surgeries by her 1st birthday for that. The doctors say these cancers are not related, that there is no correlation between her being born with an eye cancer and this monster she's fighting now. I find that kinda hard to believe, but these guys know their shid and I don't....

Thanks for the T's & P's guys. It's just a sad situation all the way around.
