TNET: No. 1 TE commits to Alabama

Oct 8, 2021, 4:55 PM

No. 1 TE commits to Alabama

2022 4-star tight end Jaleel Skinner from Greer, SC announced on Friday that he has committed to Alabama. "I want to be the best. That's why I'm coming to the University of Alabama," Skinner said during his announcement. Clemson was in his top-10 list back at the end of May with Florida, Texas, Miam Read Update »

We’ll, that’s not a good look. Make no mistake, the reason we are 3-2 is because of recruiting. Misses on guys who were supposed 4* and weren’t. Gotta imagine a offense who doesn’t use a TE is a tough sell for a High School TE

He might have even wanted to come to Clemson, but then just got practical about being a TE and where would he thrive more. I wish he had gone to some place like Florida over Bama though.

Maybe he told whoever was recruiting him at Clemson that they don't utilize the TE enough.

Exactly. He is a skinnier flex TE who is out there to catch the ball. We really aren't a good fit this season. That said, we could have used him and adapted to him. He would have to go on blind faith that we would change though.

Why would he think we would adapt to him - a TE? We don't even adapt to our QB! I Love CU but facts is facts.

Oct 8, 2021, 8:59 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: No. 1 TE commits to Alabama ]

Your observations are much appreciated.

Although using 'misses' on 4* TEs may be a bit harsh.

B.Galloway wasn't a 4* (non-blocking HS QB who has struggled to be J.Leggett V-2).

D.Allen is a good blocker, but doesn't run well enough to get open like J.Leggett or D.Allen (but not many TEs run that well).

S.Ennis ... looks promising (we'll see).

J.Brinningstool may be the J.Leggett (and maybe he'll be committed to blocking) that we need.

But it's hard to make chicken soup with only chicken feathers ... I suspect much of our offense's lack of TE utilization is because the 'older' TEs are, quite frankly, not good enough and the younger TEs are not quite ready.

The bet here is that next year (with J.Brinningstool) play calling for TES will open up.

6’5” and 210 pounds?

Oct 8, 2021, 5:26 PM

This guy is a WR. Who is he going to block at that weight?

Is he willing/able to add 40 pounds of good weight?

If we need another TE, honestly Ajou Ajou is a more likely candidate to be a real TE.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: 6’5” and 210 pounds?

Oct 8, 2021, 5:32 PM

He is probably over 210 lbs right already. We will probably see him at 245 catching balls all over the place in 2 years vs whoever.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: 6’5” and 210 pounds?

Oct 9, 2021, 8:27 AM

There is a big difference between 210 and 245. Some can bulk up and maintain speed, some cannot. If he needs two years to get there, he probably won’t still be at Alabama. People in the know say Clemson has not heavily recruited him, preferring Delp or Sapp.

Oct 8, 2021, 6:08 PM [ in reply to 6’5” and 210 pounds? ]

For guys like you & me, tight ends look more like Rob Gronkowski than Justyn Ross.

The way I see it, the sport has changed. They've got similar-sized guys labeled as tight ends there like Jalheel Billingsly & it just seems to be the nature of the sport; more guys who can catch the ball outright. Even RB's are all trained to catch passes now.

Still, I miss guys like Gronk & Jordan Leggett defining the position.

Re: TNET: No. 1 TE commits to Alabama

Jordan Leggett was never a prototypical TE either. He refused to block half his career and is the reason he never stuck in the NFL. Make no mistake, in college, a guy at 6’5 230 who can half #### block but catch passes off the line of scrimmage is a weapon. Leggett was .

Recruiting has slipped for some reason, I don’t care about stars. I’m talking about players. In my opinion it’s another reason you don’t have 5 or 6 guys on your staff who have zero experience on a D1 staff

Like others have said, not surprised. If this young man wants to be a next level TE, there's no real reason to choose us. Still, it stings a little knowing this one was plucked from our back yard. If we're unable to give elite local talent a reason to stay in-state, this could be a harbinger of thing to come recruiting wise.

Yikes there are some horrible takes here from people who clearly do not know what is going on. Delp was the main target and then Sapp was after that. Clemson moved on from Skinner, I do not want to say he is a bad kid because I do not think he is, but there is just some stuff there. Also while Skinner has the size, he does not have much else he is plagued with drops and either can not or is unwilling to block, not two things you want to see in a TE. Alabama already has two TEs committed, so if Skinner is grows in the program great but if he is a bust what do they care. In Bama's eyes he was a freaky enough athlete to give a chance on.

Why is Sapp rated the 85th best tight end. What are we seeing that other schools aren't. Tbh, we get higher pwo than what he's rated.

Would there ever be a circumstance where we'd use that scholly for an olineman and then try to pick up a freshman/sophomore TE through the portal?

Obviously looking from way outside but it doesn't look like we're going to fill the available slots. If I'm way off, please say so. Just spitballing?

We see family connections to Clemson. Sapp isn’t a legitimate high-major prospect at this time.

The incentive to include the TE in the offense is sort of

Oct 8, 2021, 10:44 PM

Proportional to the TEs ability to actually catch the ball.

Out TEs have not caught the balls thrown their way this year.

Davis Allen can catch the ball and he can block. He could be more of a weapon in the passing game if he got more snaps and was targeted with more passes.

Re: Well, it’s hard to blame him.

Oct 8, 2021, 10:49 PM [ in reply to Well, it’s hard to blame him. ]

You're right ... we don't throw (much) to the TE at this time.

Likely some of that is because half the time (when we do throw to the TE), they drop the doggone ball.

Again, hard to make chicken salad out of chicken feathers.

Forgive the 'Gamecock hope' comment, but maybe next year (with a TE that can get open and won't embarrass himself when blocking ... J.Brinningstool ???), I bet we do incorporate the TE into the offense.

Thanks again for your observations!

Am not impressed. He is supposed to be THE guy, but I have never seen him take over a game…nor be unstoppable…nor unguardable….I find the big time ranking kind of weird. THE guys I have seen in person in HS are Bobby Ingram, Nelson Welch, Stephen davis, and Anthony Simmons. Skinner can’t hold their jock straps. Again…just weird.

I have also seen Sapp play a lot. He is big, fast, and much smarter than skinner on the field. He is a football player. It is not settling to get him if we so choose.

Smart choice. He might have gone there anyway even if we were undefeated and heading to another BCS. Clemson's big draw is that we are almost automatic for the national championship final four, but when that becomes questionable, the most talented begin to have second thoughts. Many other factors go Into school selection, but BCS appearances are surely at the top of the list.

Re: TNET: No. 1 TE commits to Alabama

Oct 10, 2021, 2:24 AM

I think a TE going to AL is the least of our worries now and guess what they are now in the group with us. losing to an unranked team. This year just about everyone's steaks are ending - its that type of year (Bamma 100 wins over unranked teams - GONE, Notre Dame home winning streak - GONE, Clemson in the top 25 - GONE) but BCS???? People we are recruiting don't have a clue what the BCS even was but odds are both us an AL will be looking to start a new CFBS Playoff appearance streak in 2022. Its that sort of year.
Playoffs now - UGA, Iowa, OK and Cincy - combined record 0 Natty's and 1 previous playoff win. It is that type of year and we should be back in the mix next year with or without this young man, who I wish good luck to.

Stupid comments. If he wanted to be the best at TE, he would go somewhere besides Alabama. He would have picked Notre Dame, or Stanford or another program like that that truly utilizes the TE.

Michael Mayer at ND leads the team in receptions right now. Bama can't say that. But, of course, the kid can't hack it at ND or Stanford so he goes someplace where they don't care about academics.
