Not counting the COVID 2020 year,
What teams have made the playoff without playing in a conference championship game and who was their semi-final opponent each time?

Including the COVID year, who is only team to make the playoff while playing only 6 games? And who was their semi-final opponent?

In 2017 Alabama lost to Auburn and so missed the SECCG, but came in at #4.
Rested up, got healthy, then blew out Kelly Bryant and then won it all as UGA met Tua.

Guess I was wrong. For some reason I was thinking Notre Lame getting blown out by us in 2018

There was Oklahoma in 2015 because the Big XII didn’t have a championship game. They *did* lose.

Then that Alabama game.

Then in 2018 Notre Dame.

Then in 2020, Ohio State (who really shouldn’t have even been in the Top 10 by only playing half as many games as everyone else. )

If there’s a team that’s played less games, the committee will match them up with us in the semi-final. Guaranteed.

So Alabama, Notre Dame, Oklahoma Ohiost* all made the playoff without playing in a championship game. So four out of eight years the committee has put in a team that played one less game than the conference championship teams. Guess that argument doesn’t hold up that much.

Re: Trivia Questions:

Well, the committee *did* screw over royally TCU, and also Baylor, just because they wanted to, but justified it because “no conference championship game.” I guess they weren’t blue blood enough like Chokelahoma. It’s all about $$$. They can blab about merit, and deserving, whatever, at the end of the day the committee is paid by ESPN to make ESPN the most money.
