Tre Lamar & Shaq Smith ready to step into major roles?

Feb 2, 2017, 9:38 PM

Are these two ready to contribute in '17? I know O'Daniel and Joseph are next in line and ahead on depth chart. However, these two were far better rated coming out of high school and was slowed by the playbook.

With a year of practicing and learning the playbook, under the belt , they both should be ready to take big steps and challenge for starting roles. Right?

LB is the hardest position on the Defense to learn b/c of the calls and also having to get others lined up right, but even Anthony & Boulware were playing significant snaps their Sophomore year.

Boulware was a 4 star and Anthony was a 5 star. You make it sound like they were walk ons lol

I was simply referencing their ability to find

significant time on the field their Soph years. Not comparing them to any juan else.

I don't think that's really true. It took Anthony quite

awhile to grasp everything and they basically had to pull him in favor of Spencer Shuey in 2013. It wasn't until his final year in 2014 that everything really came together.

True, Anthony struggled at times, and lost the starting job

towards the end of the season his Soph year.

However, he was providing valuable depth, still. That's my question, will these two be ready to provide quality depth at the LB position in 2017?

I think these two will provide depth and combine to be a major force in this defense this year.

That being said I think it will be interesting to see who jumps into Bens role of defensive leader.

Dorian O Daniel has what it takes to play any position on the back end of the defense but I think he could be your leader this season. There's no doubt he has both the athletic ability and the knowledge of this system.

Chad Smith and Jamie Skalski said hi! They WILL have something to say about it!

What we'll see:

We'll see O'Daniel, Joseph, Smith, and Lamar mainly. All four guys are VERY deserving of a starting spot.

However, I love what Chad Smith and Skalski bring to the table. Those two guys were always in the thick of every play during special teams, and will not be overlooked.

My favorite hit this season from the guys mentioned above is one that probably didn't stand out to most: a Skalski sack, where he looked like Boulware 100%. It was against SC State...the energy before during and after the hit was electric, just like Ben. A really fun guy to watch.

Check out the Skalski on youtube: (look at boulware celebrating on the sidelines @:25)
