Love my Traeger. But it's a bit like an easy bake oven for dudes.

That’s funny, my buddies from Texas call mine that…. I just say, when you have 4 kids and a wife and want to smoke a pork shoulder or a brisket to perfection get back to me. No one with young kids can get away with sitting by a smoker for 12-18 hours or has time for it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Don't have to sit by it is right

but since above around 140 degrees it doesn't absorb any more smoke at that point I take it off the grill and wrap it in aluminum foil and put it in the oven at 225 for the rest of the time. Have done that with pork shoulder and brisket, and it comes out nice and tender and juicy.

Completely agree. Love smoked meats. But finding the time to do all the watching it requires is difficult.

Traeger all day. I got a pro series about 5 years ago and I am upgrading to an Ironwood series now. Only down side is the lack of a great seat, but the pro’s far outweigh that IMO. The digital meat probes that connect to the app and let you know when whatever you are cooking reaches the desired temp was a huge game changer, you cook everything perfectly and get that wood fire flavor.

Their pellets are pricey, but others work just as well. I don't have all the bells and whistles as mine is about 5 years old or more. Pork shoulder and turkey has turned out great. Steaks and burgers are just a plus. When I had a problem early and called tech support they were knowledgeable and walked me through it. They also told me the favorite at their place is using for pizza.

Got a Traeger Pro 780 and love it. I thought WIFI was a stupid splurge but man is it convenient. Traeger’s temp probe sucks though so find another WIFI temp probe, but being able to check on temp and adjust remotely is great.

Also Traeger’s pellets are overpriced and flavored alder wood. Don’t buy them but love the grill.

I have an Egg and a Primo. Traegers are good grills, but I'm more of a solid wood kinda guy. I've smoked, grilled, baked pies, cooked stew, baked bread and made pizzas in my Egg.

Look into a RecTeq I think they are better built. They are out of Augusta, GA. Love mine.

I recommend getting an egg or Kamado Joe and a flame boss system. It will turn your egg or joe into a programmable oven and keep the smoker at whatever temperature you want it, and the meat probe will tell you the meat temp all from the phone app it uses.

When I do something that is a long slow cook I can basically choose when I want it done and then set everything up ahead of time. Say I want a brisket finished in the late afternoon to let rest for dinner. I can prep everything the day before, then based on the size of meat, fire up up the smoker the number of hours per pound based on temp and have it on the smoker cooking in 30mins then get back to whatever I was doing (this comes in handy when I need something done at a specific time and have to start over night).

On top of low and slow cooking, you can do high heat cooking like searing steaks, cooking pizza, etc. I have the Big Joe and can split one half of the smoker to do high temp sear, then put the same meat on the other side with a deflector shield to finish the meat to final temp before resting without over cooking the outside of it.

I personally like the taste of the lump charcoal used in these smokers better than the pellets in the Traeger. That and you can add other fresh woods for a specific smoke flavor as wanted.

Just my 2 cents take it for what it's worth...

Traegers are for people that don't know about Recteq Pellet smokers.

Look at the reviews and customer service, and you'll see what I mean.

Recteq Headquarters is located in Augusta, GA.

I have both on my deck and we invariably use the Grill. The Egg seems to be more difficult.

If you want to cook Hot ie: steaks and burgers you may want to go with the egg.

If you want to cook slow or smoke- the treager is great for that.

I have a treager but use a flattop to cook burgers or sear meat.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If you go with a pellet grill buy the sear plates for steak

and burgers. I can crank the bull up high and get perfect grill marks. A couple of buddies recently bought the Blackstone flat grill and they love it. May be the next purchase for my outside kitchen.

Gotta agree with several other poast. I cook outdoors often, had a Traeger for 8 years, then went with a RecTeq. No comparison, RecTeq hands down. Also agree on the pellets, why pay $18.95 for 20lbs when you get 40lbs at Sams, etc for about $15

Traeger grills are over priced for what you get. Here's the dirty little secret about pellet grills, most of them use the same internals (igniters, fans, etc). The only real difference in most of them is the size of the box, and the circuit boards/controls.

What I personally don't like about Trager's is the round grill hoods. They limit the amount of meat you can put on the back part of the grill. Personally, I like Camp chefs better for a couple of different reasons, the main two being the bigger hoods and they go to higher temps than the Tragers...

The common Bit Boss Smokers (usually found a Wally World) actually get pretty good reviews from folks in the know....

Throwing another pellet grill name out there - Z Grills. I just bought the Z Grill 700D4E for considerably less than a Traeger. I bought it primarily for the controller which holds the temp +-5 degrees. My first few smokes have turned out terrific.

They suck @$$! Spend the xtra money and get you a RecTeq...You wont regret it!

I got the bull which was $1200 at the time and I do all of my smoking on there...I also have the bullseye that was $400 that gets to like 600 degrees in like 10 mins...I do all of my grilling on that...

I found that the Traeger pellets work incredible on the rec so that saves me a ton of money.,..

I like Pitt Boss a tad bit better than Traeger.

But, you won't have any issues with a Traeger. You will be pleased with it.

My boss has a Traeger and we've cooked out on it; it's great!

I personally like Pitt Boss better though.

Traeger is trash. Thin sides and temp control is terrible. +/- 10 to 15 degrees. On a long cook thats a big difference. Go with the recteq 700 Bull.
