Top 4 Programs Next 10 Years

Apr 18, 2022, 10:48 AM

I read a discussion here yesterday about top programs next 10 years. It got me to thinking about who would be my 4 picks. My criteria was simple. If playoffs remained at 4, who would make at least 4 appearances in next 10 years? Granted, the landscape will likely continue to change but here’s my guesses.

1 USC. Real one. Lincoln Riley is recruiting at high level and USC always has potential to be dominant with right coach. Plus, no real competition in PAC 12

2. Clemson. The changing land scape and Covid set Clemson back but Dabo is still young and proven he can adapt. Even if new coordinators don’t pan out, look for Tigers to remain near the top

3. ND. This is a gamble. I know Freeman hasn’t proven anything yet but he’s recruiting at a high level and he has a Dabo quality. Surrounded himself with good assistants.

4. Alabama. Almost default choice here. Yes Saban is nearing the end but he still probably has 5 years. Nick likely picks his successor.

Next group
Ohio State. Yes they win but can’t win the big one. Something about Day that can’t get over the hump. Did make a good DC hire.

TAM. Yes the hot pick right now but there’s something toxic with Jimbo. There always seems to be something insidious in his programs. Not buying them.

UGA. See TAM. Caught lightening in a bottle past year. I could see 2 playoff appearances over next 10 years. All their hopes rest on Archie sweepstakes and Florida and Tenn remaining down.

Texas. Sarkisian hasn’t proven he can win. Recruiting well but couldn’t win with a loaded roaster at USC. Depends on getting Archie. SEC will be a real challenge.

Miami. See USC. Could be thorn in Clemson’s side. Can Cristobol coach though? Seemed to be on verge of breaking through at Oregon

Oklahoma. Brent hired a top notch staff. Trying to follow Dabo plan. SEC will be tough. Can he recruit at the level needed? This will be interesting to follow.

Arkansas. Like what Pittmans done. Don’t know if he can get to next level but he’s a good coach

Tenn. Recruiting well and just got commitment from a 5 star QB. Always has potential to rise to the top

Florida. We’ll see. Not sold on Napier yet. Has potential though. Kinda like Tenn

LSU. Kelly. Ummm no

Michigan. Harbough. Ummm no

Oregon. Always has resources and recruiting. Will be one to watch.

Penn State. Good but not great.

IMMA assume you Copied and Pasted but did not bother with the citation? Also where are the coots? In the words of coot fans and Clemson Basketball Haters: Why not us?

Dang it. Knew I forgot 1. ??

Seriously did forget the Noles. Always potential there but need to start showing it on field and recruiting.

TU for answering his question. Don't see much of that.

I believe that the top teams over the next 10 years is going to be determined by the changes/ rules that are put in place to govern NIL.

If it remains largely unregulated Clemson is going to get left behind by a number of teams with deep pockets as much as that pains me to say.

If regulations are put in place, Clemson will figure it out and remain a top tier program.

Because situations change almost daily, beyond Bama and whichever other SEC team has only 1 loss, there is no way to guess. There will be a Big10 team which will be Ohio State or Michigan. The Big12 will become irrelevant and the PAC12 will become relevant because USC will dominate. Clemson or any other ACC school will most likely have to be undefeated unless the conference greatly improves.

Georgia will be in the top 4. They are recruiting at an unbelievable pace. Clemson needs an exceptional recruiting class next year to replace the numerous players that will be leaving. Dabo has to loosen his stance on the transfer portal if Clemson wants to remain a playoff contender. I agree with you ?? % about Southern Cal , I could see them returning to the Pete Carroll type dominance.

Interesting discussion, and I'm sure many here will discount UGA's chances going forward. But some of that will play out on the field. Through the 2033 season (which of course is 11 years, not 10), UGA is scheduled to play Clemson 5 more times, Oklahoma and Texas twice each (both scheduled prior to their joining the SEC), as well as Ohio St and FSU twice each, and Oregon this year. That's 14 non-conference games against many of the teams you named. I'd say UGA will more than hold their own in those games.

Seriously?? Nine different SEC teams in your possible top teams for the next decade? Didn’t you leave out about 7? If one or two are up all the others have to be down by default.

Not sure what you’re looking at. My OP only had 1 SEC team in my top 4 picks to make multiple playoffs in next 10 years. Would be difficult but not impossible for the same 2 SEC teams to be in the top 4 for next 10 years. Don’t see 2 from any other conference unless Notre Dame does rise to the top and joins ACC. However, to your point, it becomes more difficult for both Clemson and ND to be in top 4 each year.

Alabama and Georgia for sure.

The other two slots are up for grabs. We can do it, but I believe it will take being a leader in NIL support for players and also embracing the transfer portal.
