Tony Elliott quick hitters

Sep 20, 2021, 12:07 PM

*He said he thinks DJ Uiagalelei is in a good place, limiting the outside noise. I asked if they ever considered letting Taisun take a few snaps and he said no, that DJ is their guy and he has to go play and learn. Proud of the way DJ responded in the second half.

*In regards to DJ and his throwing motion, Elliott says that he showed up at Clemson with that motion, and they are working with him on it. Not a surprise to the Clemson coaches. Getting better, but still a work in progress.

*The OL is what is confusing him - they hold their own and play well in practice and then don't play well in games.

*He says the explosive plays will come - the rhythm is just off. Saturday and all the play stoppages didn't help.

Did anyone bring this up

"Clemson's total offense ranks No. 114 nationally and last (!) in the ACC. Take out the Georgia game and the Tigers would still rank No. 75 nationally. These numbers help put into context what the heck is happening."

Thanks!

And yeah, it is the big plays that are missing. Beyond just the offensive rhythm. If we go a couple of break out scores, it would be a different mentality/game.

So, he is throwing the OL under the bus

Sep 20, 2021, 12:11 PM

but not DJ even though the last two games he has had plenty of time to throw the ball yet still can't. I guess you can #### on your blue-collar guys so you don't upset your underachieving QB.

But not this as throwing DJ under ?

Yes I do. Calling out a group for not playing well

Sep 20, 2021, 12:18 PM

on gameday is a lot different than talking mechanics. He didn't say the mechanics were causing him to miss easy throws just that they are working on mechanics. Maybe my reading comprehension needs work, but if I were an olinemen and saw this quote versus the one DJ is getting after being putrid all season I'd find issue with it.

Re: Yes I do. Calling out a group for not playing well

The Clemson OL has no standing to take any issue with statements such as the one Mr. Elliot made. What Mr. Elliots statement says to me is that he's tired of taking criticism that would be more correctly directed at Robbie Caldwell and Dabo Swinney.

Making those big guys play the entire game is a recipe

Sep 20, 2021, 12:14 PM

for mistakes.

With all of the talk about our teams' depth, there has been a complete lack of a rotation offensively. There is a reluctance to try the backup when the starter continues to struggle.

Re: Making those big guys play the entire game is a recipe

Sep 20, 2021, 12:16 PM

No doubt. I really felt like Paul Tchio and Mitchell Mayes should have gotten a look when Putnam and Tate ran into each other. Dabo said last night that not playing backups was a mistake. Hope they've learned

badge-seniorwriter.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wow a lot of mistakes by this coaching staff every week

Sep 20, 2021, 12:31 PM

it seems like now, by their own admission. After the Georgia game, Dabo said play calling has to get better and he wished Clemson would've stayed with the run game more. And now not playing any backups on the o-line the whole game. Wonder when this coaching staff will call a complete game on offense?

Re: Making those big guys play the entire game is a recipe

Sep 20, 2021, 1:14 PM [ in reply to Re: Making those big guys play the entire game is a recipe ]

What am I missing. No mention of Tristan Leigh. Felt like with his recruiting buildup that he could be very close to being a freshman starter. Playbook I suspect.

As for DJU, I guess I missed that last year on his mechanics. They seemed to be ok.

Thanks for the info. This entire thread is hysterical... And I needed that since Clemson men golf tournament was cancelled due to weather.

Why didn't you ask him why he is never able to make adjustments to his 5 play book game plan during a game?

This is what $2 million dollars buys us?

I coached in a Pop Warner League (On par w/ACC?) years ago. I could possibly locate my playbook and dust it off for the OC job to replace TE and I would do it for a million bucks a yr. Couldn't do much worse and would save CU a million dollars. Since Dabo likes hiring Alumni with no coaching experience, I do have that also in my favor.

The odd thing about DJ (and his throwing motion)

Sep 20, 2021, 12:29 PM

is that i just finished watching a condensed version of the BC game from last year and he was getting the ball out on time and fairly accurately despite the same throwing motion. I haven't rewatched the ND game yet, but he had even better numbers in that one so i expect to see something similar.

The OL he was playing behind in those games certainly wasn't any better either.

Now, it is worth mentioning that Etienne, Rodgers, and Powell combined for 25 of our 30 receptions and 311 of 342 receiving yards against BC, and then 22/29 and 352/439 against ND. That's 80% of the catches and 85% of the receiving yards to guys that are no longer on the team.

That being said, it's not like Justyn Ross, EJ Williams, Joseph Ngata, Will Shipley, etc are no-talent scrubs. But they certainly have a lot less experience than those other guys did last year.

Also, DCs don't have to worry about Etienne this year which is certainly going to impact numbers in the box.

Re: The odd thing about DJ (and his throwing motion)

Sep 20, 2021, 12:37 PM

If Taisun doesn’t get some playing time he will be gone. DJ doesn’t have it. Three games into the season and no sign of improving. Clemson will not survive this season until a different approach is taken by the coaches. Miracles don’t just happen you have to make them happen. The trip to Raleigh will tell the coaches something. DJ will never be able to handle what he is going to see in Carter-Finley Saturday.

Sep 20, 2021, 12:37 PM [ in reply to The odd thing about DJ (and his throwing motion) ]

The OL is not getting any push on 1st down. Until the 4th Q we were getting 3 or less yds on 1st Except for 1 4 yd run. I dont remember a pass on 1st Down the entire game.

I dont understand why we couldnt get more with 3 safety coverage. Also why couldnt we throw underneath quick routes?

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Working on his motion is probably throwing him off.

Sep 20, 2021, 10:58 PM [ in reply to The odd thing about DJ (and his throwing motion) ]

He's thinking about the mechanics instead of doing what comes naturally.

Maybe it wasn't ideal, but messing with a batter's swing is rarely a good idea in the short term.

I am a southern woman who absolutely loves football! I mean LOVES football.
I understand there is a proper way for each position to be coached and played for safety as well as success for the player and the team. However, when I'm sitting in the recliner at home with some hot wings and a cold beer watching the game, I could not care less what the mechanics look like as long as the ball ends up in the end zone!!! Touchdown Tigers. Now Let's Go!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Either DJ looks way better in practice than he has in games

Sep 20, 2021, 12:35 PM

or Taisun looks way worse in practice than he has in games.

I understand that our coaches don't want to hurt any confidence DJ has left, but given the situation it's hard to imagine Taisun not earning a possession or two to see how he does.

Again, our coaches are obviously going to play who they think gives us the best chance to win. We have to trust that, but it's hard when we have 4 and 5 star talent at most offensive positions and can't produce points with any consistency.

Taison is a turnover machine and rive killer ever since his freshman year, turns it over 80% of the time--no idea what games you are talking about that he looks better in...even in the spring game he had nerves until the 4th and then looked "decent".

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

In limited action THIS year, Taisun has looked better

Sep 20, 2021, 4:39 PM

than DJ in my opinion.

Obviously it's a small sample size, in a backup role, against SC State. But his passes looked a lot better, and he carried himself with more confidence.

If we are basing things on last year, then I agree that DJ looked amazing and Taisun looked awful.

But at what point do we need to focus on this year? I'd say now is the time. Perhaps DJ is still the answer, it's just hard to believe based on what I've seen in games.

I would think the OL is practicing against the scout defense and looking good at practice. I doubt any of the first 2 and some 3 deep Defense positions are running the opponents defense at practice. Therefore, either the scout team defensive front is not providing enough competition or the OL is practicing against the wrong defensive schemes that they will see in the game.
