I'm curious as to why so many posters think he is a good DC candidate?
I know he's young and he seems to connect well with the players. The poetry thing seemed kind of weird to me at first, but apparently it works for him with recruits and players. I also think its clear that Dan Brooks was a much better DL coach...but Brooks was great, so that's not necessarily a knock.
I'm not saying he's not...just wondering what others know about him that make them think he could be the guy?

I don’t think he will or won’t be good, but he was brought on to replace BV, he’s next in line and it’s been a done deal for years. I think you’re just hearing he will, not that we “want” it, as fans… but what do we know.

Why do you say Bates was brought on to replace BV?
He's only ever been a DL coach, and all 3 of his previous jobs were at lower division schools?

Why would he have been brought in to be next in line? The guy was plucked from obscurity. I don’t think you bring down guy from Jacksonville State in and promise him that. Especially when he seems so lost schematically that a player has to help him out.

He's one of the best recruiters in the nation and an amazing line coach.
That said he has no coordinator or play calling experience. It would be a desperate move for Clemson to promote him to DC.

had consulted with Brent Venables on the hire. If Bates passed Brent's requirements for a DL coach then that is good enough for me. I can't see Dabo wanting to change our identity on defense - it is working and working well so if Dabo feels that Bates is the guy to replace Venables - I'm willing to give him benefit of the doubt...
Now as far as our offense - that is a different story....

You dont hire for management because the guy was great at one job. It's an entirely different skillset. Being a great position coach means nothing to coordinating, strategy, play calling.

would get the call before Bates.
Personally, I hope DS goes outside the staff for the new hire. There are a ton of really good proven DCs out there that a program like CLEM can get.

I think it will be Mike Reed if it’s an internal move. My only source is someone who spent some time in the program for a few years who says he thinks Reed is more likely to be the pick.

since Venables. There is no other answer than that. Clemson has a the ability to attract top candidates for any position, but Dabo wants his own guys to get promotions.
