To my heart burn/acid reflux brethern

what do you use to get a handle on this devil without paying 50 dollars a box for nexium? I swear I go through a bottle of tums a week. Switched to an OTC pill. Now I go through a bottle every week and a half. TIA

good lord, you on an obamacare plan? That sucks... I've only paid over $15 for a prescription once and it was for shots I had to get due to blood clots and there was no generic available....
For occasional use I like Gaviscon. When I was heavier I got it a lot but losing weight and eating better has taken care of most of my reflux.
Also, I know Costco has OTC stuff in bulk so might be another option.

My wife has BC/BS state and it is getting worse and worse. Thankfully, we haven't run across any expensive prescriptions for her yet.
Gaviscon is great if you're in a bind, much better than tums or any of the other tabs IMO. Not sure if there's a better DTD pill. You might want to ask your doc if there's something comparable for cheaper. Not sure if there's anything OTC that will be as effective as a prescription drug.

I weighed between 180 and 200 since High School and never had heart burn. Now I'm 44 about 220 and eat Rolaids like candy. You think this is because of the extra 20-30 lbs?

Dunno man but it's possible, I can say from experience that losing weight and cutting out acidic(mostly tomato based) stuff cured most of my issues. Getting older doesn't help either.

Does it work?

I know tums is cheap, but how long does the Nexium last effectively? If you're going through a bottle of Tums a week, it may not be that more expensive to use the Nexium if it works.
If Nexium isn't effective, the doctor may have other options. Do you have hiatal hernia?

No, nothing like that. Just have always had it. Not sure if there is a genetic trait but almost everybody in my family has AR to some extent.

Mine probably isnt as bad as yours but I elevate headboard and use Pepcid AC before eating foods that are acidic. Chewable Pepcid afterward is better than Tums in my opinion

Omeprazole

Costs about $20 for a pack of 50. Over the counter it's 20 mg. I used to be on a prescription for 40 mg and that cost me $30 every 3 months.

I've got GERD and prescription Omeprazole (Prilosec) in the AM and OTC Zantac in the PM keeps mine under control. I used to be on Nexium but like you switched due to cost. I keep a few Nexium handy in case of a flareup.
BTW, Nexium's patent expired in 2014 so you should be able to get generic.

Most insurance plans regard heartburn/acid reflux as a "lifestyle nuisance" not a medical condition. Since Nexium became available as an "Over-the-Counter" drug most formularies list it as a Tier III which is a polite way of saying "don't expect us to pay for it!". First, see if your doctor is willing to diagnose "GERD", Gastro-Esophogeal Reflux Disease, and prescribe Omeprazole 40mg/day. This is a generic drug of Nexium and works well for me, plus my insurance lists it as Tier I. Simple heartburn if left untreated can eventually lead to Barrett's Esophagus, a much more serious condition.

Every year or 2 my Gastroenterologist has to fight with my insurance company to get them to cover my meds. I once had Barrett's which is the case he always makes. BTW, Nexium and Omeprazole are not the same. Both are proton pump inhibitors but Nexium is Esomeprazole. Omeprazole is Prilosec and Losec.

Add 1/2 teaspoon baking soda to coffee grounds before making a pot of coffee. This helps a lot. Losing 30 pounds also helped. Now I rarely need any Nexium.

The things that helped me the most. I lost ten lbs. or more by not eating sweet stuff and no cokes or beer. The reflux goes away at some point after that.
And then I fall off the wagon again.

Ok, I'm not a physician but one who has dealt with this. Questions: what do you think is contributing to it? Your diet? Your lifestyle? Your emotional state? Is it truly a clinical problem (could be but doubtful) .A combination of all the above? If you start and continue on a road of pharmacological (Rx) treatment I assure you that is not a good solution. Done that, been there. Rx only mask the cause/problem. First I would work on my emotional state, by prayer and moderate exercise (walking). This is critical. Second is your diet. Seek out foods and beverages that are less prone to causing gasteric problems. This is also very important. I love spicy foods and Italian tomato based dishes but they aren't good for your condition. Eat more natural state foods (raw and cooked), e.g., yogurts, vegi's, certain meats (organic preferred, that no chemicals and hormones), less carbs (breads and pastas). Watch/limit your alcohol. If you smoke that has to go, but need to fill that void with something of value/ healthy.

I appreciate all of your advice. However, I get heartburn after drinking a glass of water. I don't know what's going on but anything and everything gives me heartburn. Doesn't matter how bland it is (had it after plain mashed potatoes before). I hate italian food so that's no problem.

1) ask Dr for Rx for omepredzole. Works the same, generic and cheaper 2) don't eat acidic foods - esp for dinner 3) don't drink coffee - or at least find lower acid types 4) buy a wedge pillow from Amazon that goes all the way to your hips - Medslant. Hard to get used to at first but makes a world of difference 5) all else fails see a gastroenterologist or if you are already seeing gastro try another one

Digestive enzymes work for a lot of folks. See a good nutritionist. Some GNC stores have knowledgeable clerks. Ginger also helps. If you are over 50 you may have a hiatus hernia problem . Not good. See a good gastro dr

This IS WHAT 2 DO! I have been on medication for years for an extreme case of acid reflux disease. Go to the doctor and they will prescribe you esomeprazole. It's the new generic nexium. It's stronger then prilosec "about twice as strong" and it's a delayed release unlike prilosec. I get 60 pills for 18 dollars every two months with my insurance. Thank me later. Go TIGERS!

If you haven't had an Upper GI performed, should seriously consider having it done. Could be your esophagus is restricted and is one of the causes of your problem. A Gastro MD can dilate or stretch the ring which sometimes forms around it and also check the lining to determine if the constant AR has caused damage which I understand can lead to cancer. I've had mine dilated a couple of times due to occasional trouble with food not immediately flowing through. Good luck.

I seem to be like everyone else on the heart burn stuff. I was primarily omeprezol, not sure if I'm spelling it correctly.
I've been as far as having my tonsils removed recently and Galbladder before hand.

Is that because of the weight loss, the bland diet, or the gun barrel in the mouth?
(just kidding about the last part... kind of )

Try Ranitidine from Walmart (equate) Should be in pharmacy in the antacids. Check it against the other expensive brands and their ingredients (many have Ranitidine in them) Works for me. I'm not a Dr., but this is what I did when I decided not to pay 50.00 for a ######.

several years ago due to similar problems. It helped a lot, but was not a magic cure-all. I still take OTC generic Prilosec every day, works fairly well.

Honestly, my wife has it bad and has all the prescriptions. But when it's really acting up....a big gulp of Pepto Bismol works for her almost instantly. And since she's changed her diet, particularly not eating any cooking oil (loved fried foods) it doesn't act up near as bad as it used to. Cooking oil is the antichrist of Acid Reflux.

I've dealt with GERD for about 20 years - here is what worked for me:
Pepcid, Tagamet etc is good if I know I'm going to eat something that I know causes problem or I just have an issue with reflux. You can get knock-offs really cheap (I think less than $5 at Walmart). I always keep these around.
Prescriptions. I've used several different ones (nexium, Prilosec, acaphex and a couple others). People often become "resistant" to one and have to switch. Right now I'm taking generic protonix (pantoprazole). I don't like it as well as some others but it is one of the cheaper one so may be something to look at.
Diet change. Try and avoid the things that don't like you. Some thing I'm not willing to eliminate (i.e. Pizza). About a year ago I switched to a low carb diet trying to lose some weight. I lost quite a bit but noticed as soon as I changed my diet I have had much less problem with GERD.
Stuff like not eating a few hours before going to bed, elevating the head of the bed ( not with pillows), and exercise also should be considered. If you have not been to a gastroenterologist to have an upper GI you probably should.
Hope you find something that works for you, reflux is just no fun.

Ask for protonix. Just as good as nexium for me (and mine is rough). But there's a generic and it's MUCH cheaper.

The real reason people get acid reflux is actually not enough stomach acid, but you won't hear that from your doctor b/c then he wouldn't be able to prescribe you all those pills he learns about in med school and keep you coming back for more. No conspiracies here, just an institutionalized way of thinking.
Take my advice. I had terrible acid reflux, hiatal hernia and eosinopheal esophagitis so bad I couldn't swallow my food sometimes. My GI had me on PPI and swallowing steroids until the side effects got so bad I had to look for other options.
Once I read it could be low stomach acid, I went and bought a bottle of Betaine HCL for $10. After about 2 weeks I had no more issues and gladly never saw my GI again. Take my advice and do the same.

Best control possible. If you are a freak and that still doesn't get it, add an antacid.

First, find out for sure if it is or is not a hiatal hernia causing it. If not, find out what food ingredient is causing it. I took acid blockers for years. Every prescription medicine out there. Every time a new one cam out, that is what the dr. put me on. I finally figured out I am allergic to gluten. No gluten, no heart burn, no reflux.

These 5 things helped me, A LOT....

- Cut back on coffee and alcohol. Not completely, but did cut back. Cut WAY back on soda
- Cut way back on spicy foods. (Spicy chicken sandwich from Chik fila was the worst).
- Cut back on Fried foods.
- Kept sherbet ice cream in the freezer and ate it when I had any issues. It's a strong base and worked better than prescriptions alone.
- Ate smaller meals, more frequently throughout the day with small meal for dinner.
With these things, I lost weight and acid reflux vanished. No more medicine; not even over the counter. Also saw a HUGE improvement in spring allergies. I found the less sugar I consume, the better I am.
