Is It Just Me or...

in recent memory, does not every Gamecock football player who has the slightest chance to make an NFL team declare for the draft as soon as he can? Where are the Gamecock counterparts to C.J. Spiller, James Davis, Gaines Adams, Jacoby Ford, Vic Beasley, Stephone Anthony, and Tajh Boyd? Where are the guys who opted to stay for their season seasons in spite of their NFL draft potential as juniors?
Such a dichotomy is telling and likely suggests a difference in character, forethought, and personality between star players at the two schools.

I think it's the quality of the players we recruit. They want to succeed both in football and in life so they recognize the necessity of getting a degree. It seems coots get player who just want to go to NFL period. Coaching also plays a part of it too. I think Spurrier is quoted recently as telling them to get out if you can.

Clemson and South Carolina mostly recruit the same players, so it is not a difference in players recruited. Instead, if anything, the difference is in the type of player who commits to Clemson or South Carolina. I guess Dabo Swinney is right: you can distinguish the players who are a right fit for Clemson during the summer camp circuit and recruiting process.

dude you could not be further from the truth. clemson and usc rarely butt heads on the recruiting trail. what have you been watching the last few years. there are exceptions, zach bailey being one, but we rarely recruit players that sign with usc.

Both schools recruited Mike Davis, Jadeveon Clowney, Stephon Gilmore, Shaq Roland, D.J. Smith, D.J. Park, Marcus Lattimore, Brandon Shell, Kelcy Quarles, Charles Whitlock, Chris Culliver, Brian Maddox, Quintin Richardson, Cliff Matthews, and Wesle Saunders. Such a laundry list comes from my selecting only noticeable Gamecock players from Rivals.

We may have started to recruit them but at some point we backed off most of those players, And I like how you only put coot players in there, I see what you are trying to do...

Not necessarily....it's not very often that both cu and scu end up recruiting the same kids...maybe 3 or 4 every cycle

They should go. It's a lot of dough..... The signing bonuses alone are a gob of money. They can finish their degree later.
Anyone who tells them different isn't looking out for the kids best interest.

oh it is not just you. what is to keep these guys in columbia. the coach could care less about therm. in most cases these guys could care less about school or an education. most are not even equipped to be in college in the first place. plus have you seen the ways our guys give back to clemson. they are very proud of their careers and love coming back to clemson. spurrier is about spurrier. the guy could care less about the people who play for him.

It is not just you . They know that in Columbia the next bad season is just a fourth quarter meltdown away . They have to latch on to the NFL dream before that happens ...strike while the iron is hot ...because in Columbia its not hot a lot .

I think it's a combination of things, you don't hear anybody down there talk about the "family" feel. Look at both campuses, no comparison. A lot of the kids that play there buy into the play in the sec espn stuff. Their whole focus is on football and not academics so they don't care as much about a degree. Clemson and most other acc schools have higher academic standards. So before they ever sign they already know if they care about a better education or not. Take football and college out of the equation and which town would you like to live in more?

it is a culture difference

Playing at USuCk is a means to an end and very few of them become bonded with that program for life......a mercenary mentality with NFL on the brain. It starts from the top and trickles down. When u look at schools like Clemson, Oregon, SC Trojans, Bama, Texas A&M, etc., u have fan bases and culture and tradition that have a built in passion that is bloodborne and will never ebb and flow. The Chickens will never believe, and deep down inside their fans, culture, is an insecurity and a surprise at any success. I have felt for years that players they get over us are by and large not the kids we want wearing a Paw anyway. They arent all knuckleheads there but I truly believe that a kid attracted to that program is a kid not likely to be All In anyway. Id bet on that 90 percent of the time with the Lattimores and Shaw types as the rare exception.

It is our caliber people we recruit, but really, who would want to stay there any longer than they really had to?

Arguably their greatest player ever, Sterling Sharpe

Has a tenuous relationship with that school at best. For those who never saw him play, you are talking a guy who was headed to the NFL HoF if he wouldn't have had the neck injury that ended his career. Any Chicken rooted deep into that program will tell stories about Sharpe's weird relationship with his former school. George Rogers was the best college RB I ever saw in terms of power, speed, and strength. I would take him over Herschel in a skinny second. He is the only one that is woven into that school, and in their defense, his life was a shambles and the school helped him get back on track. Other than that, there are no Jeff Davis', James Trapp's, CJ's, etc. because the culture does not grow that. Dabo was right, they ain't Clemson, they ain't the real USC, they really are all they will ever be and that is a lovely thing.

Mike Davis seems tired and just over it. I wonder if he will have as fond of memories of his college football career has his brother does?

Could it be a difference in coaching staffs?
Dec 27, 2014, 8:22 AM

Our staff seems pretty content with allowing the kids to go pro if that's what the player wants.
It seems like Clemson's staff does much more to encourage their players to stay. Didn't Dabo tell Nuk that he wasn't ready?

Its called a college degree and coots did not go to college for that reason.....only to play football and HOPE to make it to the pros....Tigers go because they want to get their degree first and play pro football second....Difference is the type of kids we recruit vs. coots.....prime example is the clown going to Carolina because there was no way he would get accepted into Clemson....Go Tigers!!!!
