Re: TNET: VOTE: What teams would you like to see ACC add?

Just read a wild idea on twitter which I reposted on my blog:

Why not go for broke and invited USC, Stanford, Notre Dame (and maybe Navy) as a package?
Gets the ACC to 20 teams, three new states, all name brands in football (Navy might have to be a football-only though; can't see them keeping up in basketball). Notre Dame still has 4 games to schedule as they wish - SAME AS NOW - and the ACC picks up some of the most marketable games on Notre Dame's schedule.

Thoughts? Is it TOO far out of the box?

Go for Penn St, UCF, and West Virginia. Keeps it geographically sensible. Ask WV about the massive travel they do now and I bet it’s a huge burden in many ways.

I will get back to you when, and only when Notre Dame comes down off their "Holier than Thou" attitude and joins the conference as a full member or "He double hockey sticks" freezes over, which ever comes first, because without Notre Dame, like them or not ,nothing else matters.

I think USC and Stanford bring too much coast to coast travel into the equation. From a football quality standpoint it makes sense but that is a lot of travel.

I don't get the idea about Penn State leaving the Big 10 that someone came up with. What possible motive would Penn State have to leave a conference with much more prestige and a bigger payout than the ACC has? Just look at the rankings of the top universities in the country to understand that a move will not happen.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Penn State's rival is Pitt. They would fit well in the ACC.

Appalled that Penn State is leading!

Jul 24, 2021, 7:31 AM

We have to take care of this nations children and Penn State failed to do just that in the most despicable way for decades. I have heard the argument that those people are gone and the ones there now shouldn't carry that burden!??!! Really, if anyone thinks that "those" people are gone are sorely mistaken. A couple have died and I thank nature/God for getting them off this earth but there are so many who knew about the rampant molestation of children that are walking on campus now! Also at other schools, high schools, youth camps etc... Penn State institutionally allowed this to happen at every level from grad coaches to coaches to academia to Dean's to god knows who for so long. Victims and their family's still see Penn States name and I couldn't imagine how they feel. These victims are still here too and we only know of ones who come forward. I can only imagine the men who have suppressed the vulgar acts that didn't come forward and I pray to Jesus for mercy and their spirits to be healed. It's disgusting and Penn State should have had their credentials revoked entirely. I'm ashamed to see the majority even consider this pack of scum. I pray dearly for the victims of Penn State.

Re: Appalled that Penn State is leading!

Jul 24, 2021, 8:33 AM

Texas Tech owns the Dallas / Fort Worth CFB market as well as NW Texas. 40K students, the only school in Texas with a law and medical school on campus and starting a vet school.

Good athletics - in the last few years - final 4, Track natty, omaha 3 times in the last 5 years, finals in golf, etc. Football is up and down - true.

WVU makes sense geographically but what do they bring market wise and are bitter rivals Pitt and the Virginia schools going to let them in? Maybe, but I don't see it.

Where is all this Penn State talk coming front? Thats crazy talk.

There is no silence in me for Penn State. They should be like every other offender and tell everyone in the neighborhood what they let happen.
And it came from Sandusky and Joe Paterno and the rest of those sick sobs. I am just hear for a mouth piece for victims of their universities lack ok of control and making a place for sick s.h.i.t to happen on and off campus. Everytime I see Penn in some positive light I will speak up for their victims. That's about it my friend.

Expansion is likely if for no other reason

Jul 24, 2021, 9:48 AM

Than to be able to renegotiate a lackluster contract. The obvious first and maybe only option is Notre Dame. If we were able to get Notre Dame for 15 full members and drop divisions, then perhaps we could stop there.

If we needed a 16th or if Notre Dame refused, we might need a new member just to redo the contract. Problem is, no other team can move the needle enough to increase the money. However, we might need to add West Virginia, just to go ahead and move toward 16 with the best team and program available. This would keep the Big ten from adding them and encroaching any further into to ACC territory.

Those that say Notre Dame would not be approved by the snob schools like UNC, Duke, Virginia need to remember that Clemson and Florida State are the ones calling the shots now due to football money. I hope Clements, former West Virginia president can help push them through as well.
This is not about markets any longer. It is about rabid fanbases and games for inventory. It is about streaming and fans that will travel and help fill stadiums. Programs that will bring rivalries and interest. Best scenarios in order of preference.
1. Notre Dame and maybe stop there
2. Notre Dame and West Virginia
3. West Virginia only if ND says no and hold a spot for Notre Dame.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Obviously meant those that say WV

Jul 24, 2021, 9:56 AM

Would not be approved by the snob schools need to remember that Clemson and Florida State have a big say now and would want West Virginia.
Ni Cental Florida or Cincinnati. No directional school or commuter school.

Agree with everything you say except the “snob school” comment. They would love Notre Dame, the snobbiest of them all. ND and West Virginia make sense.

How about Teams you'd like to see LEAVE the ACC?

Jul 24, 2021, 10:46 AM

I could come up with a number of those.

Adding teams-it creates a lot of "what -ifs" when you make these super conferences. What is the point? Creating more difficult schedules is an obvious result from a football team standpoint...or it could be a less difficult schedule inside your conference if you add lesser teams.

Add Pen State-why not. Add someone of less caliber in football-no. From a conference standpoint, it's almost all financial anymore. We're competing for big TV contracts. Each "conference" divides the spoils to some degree. In the SEC's case, you could make the point that Clemson (or a Clemson type)is a driving force behind their thinking, in principle. Bear with me...The larger the group the more bargaining power you have. There is a finite amount of time and good teams in a season. We are a good team in a crappy conference at the moment. The fact that we are a REALLY good team is a royal pain in the a$$ for the SEC-by which I mean $$$$. We cost the SEC conference a lot of money. How do you manage that, you add as many good teams as you can-more good teams, even more bargaining power-more "conference" TV games and less "other" smaller conference games. Expansion at some point could be a real disadvantage for a good team not in a super conference. Chances for television exposure become more limited than they are now. To say the least, adding is a snowball effect-one snowball getting bigger and one snowball melting and getting smaller. There are literally cases of canned worms you start opening up every time you add a team or have a team switch conferences.

Where we are right now-add Penn State or any other good team you can find. Just know that the picture we create may not be the one we intended to draw in college athletics. We are now a semi-pro business model. Be prepared for the next step.

Re: TNET: VOTE: What teams would you like to see ACC add?

Jul 24, 2021, 5:56 PM

Why are you guys thinking /pushing Notre Dame? Swofford courted the hayul out of them, bent the ACC over backward for what? The ungrateful sods happily walked away after the football season after the ACC saved their bacon.

NOW, some of you folks want the arrogant bastadges back in for football. The original deal, hoping they would "see the light" and be greatful enough to join as full members? I would rather have the gamecluks as member before Notre Dame! Notre Dame has consistently for themselves only. Has changed and won't change. I would love to see them kicked out of the ACC period as then if we NEED another member, look elsewhere, day USF and gamecluks or Penn State.

The SEC would do well to remember the genesis of the Big 12 and see how that worked out. They made a mess of about 5 conferences and now will pollute the SEC too.

I just don't see 'the love- for Notre Dame. Some of you boys should look into.what they did to the AFCA, when Notre Dame got their NBC contract. Notre Dame is, has been, and always will be dishonest. Look at their history.

Re: TNET: VOTE: What teams would you like to see ACC add?

Jul 24, 2021, 6:17 PM

Unless the ACC brings in several marque programs now Clemson needs to either join the SEC or form a super conference with the remaining non SEC marque programs. If we
don’t do either the substantial income difference and marketing clout of the SEC will make current success impossible to maintain.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: VOTE: What teams would you like to see ACC add?

Jul 24, 2021, 8:19 PM

My thoughts here as a former CLEMSON athlete is to cut ties with ESPN. The biggest mistake the ACC made when initiating the ACC Network was negotiating with ESPN. Any idiot including John Swofford should have been abundantly aware that the ACC would always play second fiddle to the SEC on that network.

Fox Sports, NBC Sports as well as CBS Sports was an opportunity to remove the conference from that position. Also, if they had negotiated with NBC they may have entertained the option of allowing ND to remain under their umbrella, gaining all ACC Sports Programming and adding the attraction of the ACC Basketball Tournament exclusively on a network TV channel without cable requirement. And looking forward to today’s situation, establish the opportunity for something like Peacock Network to handle the streaming aspect of each individual universities entire sports programming through them. That allows an additional stream of income for both the university as well as the network through a monthly fee so fans are able to watch any sport, men’s & women’s.

Swofford and his cronies were too “carolina blue shaded” when addressing the ACC Network initial introduction. That was a huge failure! The ACC should NEVER play the backup role to the SEC! Never, Ever!!!!

When I flip to the ACC Network during the last several weeks prior to NCAA football practice opening, and all I see is decade many old basketball games being broadcasted, I want to vomit!! What an illogical approach to the beginnings of NCAA Football Season 2021! The powers to be are missing the boat.

I’ll have to dig a bit deeper into who to add other than ND & WVU. Penn St is an option, however, I prefer to remain mostly Southern Fried Football rather than allow others who don’t necessarily have the deep-seated love & addiction to our beloved football.
