In-season coaching changes always seem weird, but one this

Nov 16, 2021, 8:25 AM

late in the season seems especially strange. I guess they wanted to get an early seat on the carousel.

The coaching profession is a zero sum game. Someone wins, someone loses.

I would like to see VT play for championships again.
Clemson vs. VA Tech used to be a great game?
They played for the National Championship about 20 years ago.
Beamer ball is only a memory……

Now, let’s beat Wake!

In season coaching changes are the new normal now that there is an early signing period. This is all about recruiting. Because this is the new normal, I wonder how Dabo will adjust?

That plus the early signing period has a big impact on why schools make mid-year changes

Welcome to the carousel.

Watch for Venables and Elliott to be mentioned. It comes with the territory. I actually started following the coaching carousel for this reason. In the mid-nineties FSU had two or three coaches mentioned every year (Chuck Amato, Mark Richt, Mickey Andrews). Back then it was easier to learn who had interviewed and who hadn't. Mickey and Mark interviewed for several jobs (before Richt took the UGA job). Amato interviewed for the NCSU job and had to wait about a month (while NCSU went elephant hunting) before being offered the job.

Much harder now to figure out how serious a candidate is for the job (on either end, the coach or the school). But, I expect the "guys with inside sources" will be posting all over the internet that both guys are being pursued by VT, among other schools.

The Next HC will have to figure out how to navigate NIL and the transfer portal to get the type of players needed to be competitive at a championship level.

Why?

Name one that he has developed in the last six years while at VT? It's been a revolving door at that position.

You see what Hendon Hooker is doing at Tennessee AFTER HE LEFT Fuente, right?

Why would you want Clemson to fail so miserably?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Streeter is a very good QB coach. This year is a fluke.***

There's something in these hills.

Always tough to be the guy that follows a program legend

Nov 16, 2021, 8:46 AM

Fuente truly had some head scratching losses during his tenure. Something else about Fuente that I always wondered about was his general public demeanor. In most of his public TV interviews that I've seen he comes across as a humorless automaton that made me wonder why anyone would want their child to go play for a guy like that. I don't know whose public speaking skills are worse - Justin Fuente or Dave Doeren as both come off as stoic door knobs in their interviews.

Will be interesting to see who VT goes after in their coaching search...

From what I heard from some VT folks (most of my family are Hokies - made the early 00s rough). First -really puzzling losses happened with beamer too. That year they lost to Boise/JMU and then ran rough shod in the ACC?

There was a LOT of culture clean-up post Beamer. Acadmeics, 5-heart ...2 star heart guys were lacking. It was always kinda flimsy but as Beamer in his last years didn't have a handle. Fuente was supposed to clean it up - and really did to a point but could not really sell VT as well.

Next Bud Foster was kinda a thorn in the saddle in a weird way. It limited Fuente. On one hand, he can/could be a very good DC but was also slow to adapt vs the spread. Thus like 2011, when he lost, he lost bad and VT was dependent on having a top D to overcome a lack of offensive talent. Thus specific styles that were absent in the 00s ACC came to popularity, Bud just was not as good at adapting, specifically since it constantly seemed that the secondary was a near constant issue if I remember correctly.

Finally, during Beamer's rise, other mid-atlantic programs faced bleak times. Ped State started having issues. Maryland disappeared. Tennessee disappeared, Clemson was not poaching, not to mention Carolina. Even others like Pitt. Welsh was gone from UVA. It was the best case for VT (great legacy coach in a power vacuum).

However, in the early 2010s, you had some of those other programs in VT footprint return. Clemson and PedState. Even if UT wasn't "back" they poached enough talent. We took a few too (Tajh and Ferrell from VA).

I think around the time of PedSate's B10 champ year (2015?) all of their talent came from Norther Virginia. THAT to me was a sign that VT was hurting more than anything. Even then, it seems the 757 (tidewater area) has not been producing as much transcending talent to keep VT going. So it has been really really bad for VT just from competition standpoint.

Why now? They won last week. There may be more to the story than meets the eye. Anyone have a scoop?

December signing day - you can’t wait anymore

Nov 16, 2021, 9:08 AM

A sign they elect their next hire to at least be named by then or tell the kids they are interested to please hold on til Feb

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It was worth an extra $1.25M to get a head start on hiring.

Nov 16, 2021, 11:42 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Virginia Tech announces head football coaching change ]

VT could have saved $1.25M if they had waited until 12/15. But it looks to be a pretty busy coaching carousel year with some top-tier openings (like LSU & USC) so the best candidates will likely get snapped up quickly, thereby possibly leaving VT with mediocre options.

I hate to say it, but with the defensive history at Virginia Tech, Brent Venables would be a great choice.
