Like him or not, Meyer is a great coach. Our Clemson Alumni will shine, and I wish them the best of luck. Tebow at TE or slot as well, interesting, and they will not be boring.

This is dumb. I get trying to make a Kamara type player out of him but he is a RB, not a WR. Work on hands out of the backfield.

P Harbin type role, is who I believe Urban is basing this move on.

Dude, he was TL16’s 3rd receiver in 2020.

Amari...Powell...ETN. He was pretty much TL16’s slot. The world saw it. He was (and is) an amazing receiver. Urban saw it. The world saw it. Urban is going to take advantage of the “long handoff” from TL16 to ETN. Chemistry.

There is a difference in being a weapon out of the backfield and moving to slot. Matchups, skill set and utilization are completely different. Etienne is similar to Alvin Kamara, not Percy. If they use him as RB and are simply using this as training then that is fine. If not, then they would have been better off drafting Rodgers.

I was speaking in general and used Harbin because he played for Urban at Florida. I was not directly comparing players. Having said that - it is ETN's acceleration to top speed that I believe they see as a matchup nightmare. Also, his ability bounce off tackles, while improving his receiving skills.

His high school coach said a year or two ago, that he did not play him as receiver in high school, but wishes he had. And at that time, he decided to work with Trevor Etienne as a receiver as well as a RB. Not sure where Trevor will end up going to college.

Interesting and a little weird - it’s rookie camp, and Meyer wants to respect his solid 2nd year RB and to give ETN reps and gauge ETN's ability to split out in the slot for a 4-5 WR look.
How do you see it makes him more money Owens with the rookie pay scale - you mean in the intermediate time frame?

This is about the dumbest thing I have heard of. Have ETN come out of the backfield to create mismatches with a LB if you want to create opportunities for him to get the ball in space. This is a grand example of when you hire a coach who wants to prove he is smarter than everyone else. Tony Elliott laid out the blueprint on how to successfully use ETN...just follow that. Guess I shouldn't be surprised being as though Urban has never coached 1 day in the NFL just like Lou Holtz before him. Guess years from now we will see picture of Urban & Holtz together titled " Dumb & Dumber".

Would Be Evolved Into The Slot ---

Could be deadly on a wheel routes.
In the backfield just give him some blocking. Jaguars offensive linemen can run block...right??

Don’t agree with that move at all. Etienne is a RB. Draft Amari if you want a slot receiver. Total waste of talent at that position imo. Never understood the pick considering how well Robinson performed last year. Hope this works out well for Etiene but my first take is not good.

but it's only for rookie minicamp. Once they see he isn't a full-time receiver, the experiment will end.
The upsides of doing this are: (1) It could sharpen his skills as a receiver overall, which will help when he lines up where he belongs in the backfield and (2) there is a slim chance it does work.

I think it will be a great new look, and if it works, it will be a huge addition to their play-making. If it doesn't, Urban will not be dumber for trying. He will be viewed as someone who has imagination. Hoping, and believing this will be a great new, and successful, addition to the Jag's offense. Time will tell.

If he is only going to play in the slot it makes little or no sense to me because it will limit his touches. If this is a way to keep ETN on the field in empty backfield situations then it does make sense. Clemson did this some last year too. It’s a way to keep your playmaker on the field for every down but his “normal “ position should be in the the backfield.

Its b/c they have a top 3 NFL running back already

in Robinson. Plus they have CArlos Hyde who's going to get PT b/c he's an old OSU guy. So if Etiene wants to play significant minutes and get on the field he'll need to be a slot/hybrid back. That was the head scratching at taking an RB in the draft for Jacksonville. They didnt' need one. Unless Robinson is a player who's contract is expiring soon.

Sort of feels like some of y'all don't think ETN could run a jet sweep from the slot.
It is not full-time slot and it is in an experimental phase.

This is a good move by Meyer. It will get ETN on the field more quickly IF he learns the position in this early camp. At this point this is an experiment

It’s a practice camp. Anyone acting stupid about this is showing their dumbness. A RB working on his receiving skills is a major plus and honestly should have been considered while at Clemson.

One more thing

If this works out, it will help ETN stay on the field if his pass blocking isn't up to snuff.
Pass blocking at the NFL level is my huge concern for Travis and it may limit how much they can use him in the backfield. But if lining up at receiver becomes a big part of his usage, pass blocking becomes less important for him.
Blitzing NFL LBs and DBs know Travis' reputation and will be targeting him until he starts giving himself up to protect the QB.

Andre Ellington made this move early in his NFL career to get on the field and get him the ball without having to be hit by DL and LBs.
It worked out great for him and let him use his skills in open field while still learning how the NFL game works.
This will be great for ETN's career if this works. It won't hurt his ability as a RB at all if it doesn't work.
Just imagine what it might have done for Spiller's career if the Bills had done this with him instead of forcing him to be an "NFL running back" between the tackles early in his career.
Win/win for ETN.
It's better to have a guy who can play 2 positions than a guy who is stuck in 1 position.
