Swinney says Clemson won't "change to change" on transfer portal policy

Clemson's use of the transfer portal -- or lack thereof -- has come under the spotlight as analysts seek to figure out why the perennial Playoff contender has stumbled out of the blocks in 2021. ESPN College GameDay analyst David Pollack referenced a couple of times heading into last weekend that Cl Read Update »

The post you replied to mentions Fields and Burrow. Would you have rather had one of them? They would not have thought about coming here anyhow. That is what TL has to do with.

Do you think that we needed another LB? Jones left because he saw the writing on the wall with Simpson. Even with Jones leaving, Venables has lost playing time because of the maturation of Bentley and Simpson, and the arrival of Carter and Trotter.

Two of the positions that I have heard about this fall are QB and RB. Did you think that we were weak at RB or QB in the Spring?

We can even go with the idea that we can find someone in the portal that would come and improve the team. In order to look for them, we have to take less recruits because the guy in the portal isn't coming here without a scholarship. Should we hold back a scholarship or 2 to get somebody from the portal? I believe that Tristan Leigh was our last commit last year. Do you think that we would have been better off gambling on an OT in the portal than taking a 5 star OT out of high school?

We will get some guys from the portal at some point, when we have some people leave early or transfer that we were not expecting. That means that it will not be on a regular basis, so it will not be a way to build the program.

If you really want to use the portal, then you have to talk Dabo into a different method of roster management. Alabama, Georgia and LSU just pull the scholarship of the lowest ranked guy from that position. Dabo believes that we make a commitment to the young man, when he makes a commitment to us. I don't think Dabo is going to change that philosophy, and without a change building through the portal just isn't going to happen.

Proof of pulling scholorships? Or just an assumpution trying to justify the situation your coaching staff has put your fanbase in? Realize that this season is all on your head coach. He should of seen the weaknesses in this team, if he didn't then he has blinded himself with his own success. As long as he refuses to adjust to the way CFB has changed this is a trend your program will see. You don't build a roster through the portal but programs are going to miss on recruits, or kids are going to leave for percieved greener pastures. You've had a lot of kids leave for various reasons, why not try and build depth?

I can't wait for the 1980 bs...but we won this year, own CU as a whole and so far the future looks bright.

The issue is use of the portal which has nothing to do with TL or who Bama picked up. Obviously we didn’t need Burrow or Fields. The portal has to do with filling holes due to early departures, injuries and misses.

But, but, ya know, Trevor Lawrence, and anything else manipulative that can be thought of to end a conversation surrounding a good question. Our program has become resistant to change, somewhat blind and stubborn, and past success seems to be an enabler. Sometimes a bully needs his teeth kicked in before he realizes his old schtick isn’t gonna work anymore. We’ll learn new fighting methods once we are firmly supplanted from the top for an extended period. Unfortunately scholarships aren’t being reserved for charity elsewhere. So what? Just because we lose 1-2 games doesn't mean that we need to change the whole way we do things and immediately start emulating the opponents that we lost to.

We've won 2 titles since Ohio State won their last.
I would be surprised if we saw LSU win another title in the next 5 years.

Yes, we lost to LSU who got a QB who was the 3rd stringer at (THE) Ohio State Univ. LSU had a scholi available and needed a QB...we did not. There are very few gems in the rough out there. Even a blind squirrel (Ed Ogeron) finds a nut once in a while.

year. Georgia was very pleased with D. Kendrick, said he was a hustling leader in their backfield and was a big part of their success. Not changing the O. for a slower QB. Not teaching him to play behind center at goal, using a speed option on a third and one with all the big power runners we have. I love Dabo, however I think he needs to open to creative new changes including the transfer portal.

Excessive loyalty to staff even in the face of mediocre coaching/development and refusal to change with the times were two main factors in Richt's eventual downfall at UGA.

Besides the two titles, there are lot's of similarities between the two coaches. Will be interesting to see if Dabo can reverse the current trajectory.

I fully understand the loyalty part of staying with your recruited players but when you have a glaring need going into a season (like we did with o line) you have to be savy enough to bring in one or two players if your planned starters do not get the job done. I’d be shocked if this season is a 6-4 or 7-3 type that we don’t look at the portal more in the future.

If he cant make it at, oh say Michigan/Arkansas/ Boise St, were going to take away playing time from someone who we're trying to train to be better? Pull scholies from players? You're taking a chance on someones reject, instead of someone you specifically brought to the program. Sorry, I'll take Dabo over you any day

Re: Very short sighted IMO on Dabo’s part…

Oct 5, 2021, 8:11 AM

Spot on. Look at the players in the Transfer Port-O-Lette. Are there any who would be considered quick fixes? Sure, there was a Burrow, a Fields, but look at why they entered the portal. I believe those portal players who are making an immediate impact already made "deals" with schools even prior to entering the portal (see LSU). There are a few who do make an immediate impact, but the vast majority wind up either playing at a lower level or worse yet, never getting to play at all. Go look at the stats on Clemson players who enter the portal, other than Kendrick, who has panned out? Just because there's a mountain doesn't mean there's gold in it. Go TIGERS.

flag link

E.g. Failed to take 5-star UT OL Wanya Morris & Cain Madden

[3]
Oct 5, 2021, 1:57 PM

Not all players in the transfer portal are worse than what's on our roster or are bad eggs. For example:

Cain Madden was a 6th year grad transfer from Marshall who wanted to increase his draft stock by transferring to a top-tier team, so he transferred to Notre Dame. He is now the starting RG for Notre Dame.
https://www.si.com/college/notredame/football/notre-dame-football-expected-to-land-marshall-transfer-cain-madden

Wanya Morris was a 5-star OT out of Grayson HS, whom we recruited but who chose Tennessee. He started 19 games but apparently he became disillusioned with UT and decided to transfer because he wanted to play for a championship-caliber team.. He's currently a 2nd string OT at OU.
https://www.si.com/college/usc/football/wayna-morris-tennessee

I think both of these guys would likely be starting for Clemson this year, or would at least provide valuable depth.

Agreed, it is insulting. Was there a single Clemson fan who ever suggested replacing Trevor Lawrence?

I’m mildly relieved he alluded to potentially using it at some point. Gives me hope that he’s at least thinking about it, even if he’s far off from publicly admitting it. My issue with his approach to the portal is it’s akin to not going shopping for a car until yours is completely broken down. People who do that always pay more than those who are a little proactive.

Re: TNET: Swinney says Clemson won't "change to change" on transfer portal policy

Oct 4, 2021, 9:29 PM

“ People say, well we got beat by a transfer quarterback. Well, ok, do we want to get rid of Trevor Lawrence?”

What a stupid comment. What is he even talking about? Does he think that since Ohio st won with a transfer qb that that’s the only position we would be able to use a transfer on? Ohio St had a need at qb, we didn’t, but we had a need on offensive lineman. There’s no way he can honestly say there wasn’t a transfer offensive lineman that he thought could have started here, and if he couldn’t see that he’s just not being honest with himself. Yes we have young players that could end up being stars, but that does nothing for the team this year.

It’s not change just to change. It’s change because he has to. Every team that’s competing for a championship this year is having major contributions from transfers. Bama and Georgia have recruited much better than Clemson and still use them.

This is not a surprising attitude from Dabo. Since he’s had success as a head coach he has been extremely arrogant and bullish in his way of doing things. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t.

I am not T-net genius... just a starter (see my profile)...lol... but why do you have to find "starters" on the portal. Our starters are mostly top notch. There are folks that would transfer to our program to be back-ups. Maybe use some of the scholarships that the coaches sons have and bring in some folks to build OL and DT depth... I don't understand the coaches sons getting scholarships anyways. When I was at CU employees and their families could attend for free. Has that changed? (If you know please share.) And even if it has why does anyone making millions a year need a scholarship for their kid?

I was responding to the guy who called Dabo arrogant. But I think you’re a little naive. The number one reason for players entering the portal is they are beaten out at their position and want more playing time. So most have no interest in coming here as a backup. Examples are MikeJones, Tavian Feaster, Zerrick Cooper, etc. A few get themselves in trouble or kicked off a team like Kendrick or Lyn J. The are red flag players that don’t give you confidence they’ll fit with a new team based on their history.

Hopefully we’ll win the ACC Championship every other year that’s about all we’ll be able to do. We absolutely cannot continue to recruit low numbers and not take transfers. It would be different if we were recruiting 23-26 guys a year.

He is missing the boat is he does not get on board. Mind you I did not get the sense that he is completely against it. He completely left the door open to use it which is what I think you will start to see.

The disgusting thing is these programs are recruiting these kids while they are playing for another team. It is very sleazy.

But we cannot continue to lose quality players and not have a plan to negate the loss. Injuries will happen every year so you need some experienced depth.

A couple of things have to start happening for our Tigers to continue to be successful long term.

1. Oversigning by a few. A few will transfer anyway so it just keeps us from having to keep giving walkons scholarship. Over sign in the trenches and olinemen.

2. Use the flippin portal. Teams are going to start recruiting from other teams so I guess we have to hold our nose and do the same to compete.

I am glad that somebody understands that Dabo's reluctance to over sign recruits is the number one issue. You really can't get to the #2 point without #1. I can't say that I agree that we should, because if we actually over sign incoming players, then we have to pull somebody's scholarship. If we start taking the scholarships of young men on a regular basis then can we keep the family atmosphere?

Nothing happens in a vacuum. If it affected nothing else, Dabo would be taking transfers all of the time. However, taking a transfer means we either have to take one less recruit or take a scholarship from an existing player. I rather not see us do either on a regular basis.

To really find out how good or bad the portal is

Oct 5, 2021, 1:23 PM

Let us ask South Carolina, FSU, South Alabama how well there teams are doing not to good, but when you have players hurt like Clemson does go after a junior or would be senior then if the player doesn't pan out your not wasting a scholarship on a freshman or sophomore who is never good enough to stay on the field. But the solution starts from the head and then go down the list. So the coaches need to self evaluate themselves and evaluate each other and also develop themselves as much as the players, the same Ole same Ole routines do not work from the players so it should not work from the coaches either.

We have a head coach who is smart, he just needs to be more able to adjust each and every year and improve the team as whole. What may have worked the previous year or years do not mean it is going to work the next.

Disappointed in this. Again; portal isn’t a huge deal….it’s a small way to help fill holes….but its now a necessary piece since there is only a one-way street out of Clemson.

Not signing enough quality players at certain positions and not having enough quality depth is really hurting us. Zero need to shoot yourself in the foot. Great CEOs always look to adapt, adjust and improve.

I hope someone asks Dabo if we looked for a OG, LT and/or C with starting experience in the Portal. I get Tchico, Mayes, Leigh. Tate and Lithicum will all be good/great one day but that was WAS NOT gonna happen 2021. Biggest mistake of the off-season was not going to get a couple OL from the portal! Probably also a true Slot WR. I know he thinks Will Taylor will be special one day but Taylor never played WR is High School and quite frankly hasn’t done much at WR this year. We would be 4-1 maybe even 5-0 if Dabo and Co would have gotten a few impact players at critical positions from the Portal. This is what EVERY other team is doing!

Ok, gives the names of which OL and slot receiver we should have brought in. Go on the record. I guess we shouldn’t have brought a walk on named Renfrow either since he played WB in HS too.

We had Spector at slot with Stella's and Taylor coming in Dabo didn't know all 3 would get hurt, the same with the defensive line, but Ruke and Williams are better backups than we could have gotten through the portal. Maybe Dabo thought our OL was going to be better than they turned out to be, we could have used the portal to get better there, but once the season starts it's too late.

Nick Saban is perhaps the greatest football mind to ever have coached the college game. He uses the portal to great effect. Why is that not a lesson for Clemson?

Trying to stay positive, but it's gibberish coach-speak like this that makes me really worried. Dabo is coming off more arrogant and disconnected than ever. He needs to realize that the college football game is passing him by and his legacy is on the line. He will always be a 2-time NC coach. No one can ever take that away from him. But he was neck-and-neck with Saban for a brief moment back in 2019. Now he looks more like Beamer 2.0. Stubborn, outdated and disconnected from the current realities of college football. Yeah, I know I am a spoiled fan or a coot. Save it.

I support Dabo staying out of the portal.

1. All-in. We are a culture that you are "all in" or not.

2. If you want to be a Tiger, you have to commit from the beginning. No "sampling" other schools, this is your only chance. That is a big recruiting tool. It gives us "first crack" at swiping up the better talent rather than using resources to "compete twice". Old adage: If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over. I think that is John Wooden. Plus, if you don't like us, well it just opens up more space for young guys to come in. It is building a base.

3. Folks forget you can still wiff in the transfer portal.

4. Next, how many generational talents are in the portal? Your TL16, DW4, Tees, or ETN? The *best players* don't leave.

"The *best players* don't leave."

Baker Mayfield (#1 pick), Kyler Murray (#1 pick), Joe Burrow (#1 pick), Justin Fields (1st round pick), Jalen Hurts (second round pick)...

Funny, every single example you listed was replaced by a better QB on their original team

DW4 was better than Mayfield/Hurts.

Mayfield started at TT but was injured and then split time with another freshman QB. Kingbury waffled and mismanaged the QB situation however, a BETTER QB was inbound in Patrick Mahomes. Yeah, Mayfield would have been Mahomes's backup.

Hurts of course was good but he got beat by Tua... and DW5

TL16 was better than Burrow, Murray, Fields.

Really Burrow was beaten out by JT/Haskins (wow). Burrow fell into the right situation at LSU and being a good QB flourist but that does not mean that he was "the best". Consider him the Nick Foles of college QBs. Just a singe flash in an otherwise journeyman career.

Murry lost his job to Kyle Allen. Twice. Hummm. After being the backup, he came in and had some success and then had some really bad performances too. He was benched again and Allen regained being the starter. Allen isn't bad as he is an NFL QB in his own right.

Fields was less than Jake Fromm (state farm). He did well at OSU, but he was no TL16.

That only works when you’re actually developing players…

QB footwork and mechanics tend to regress under Streeter, WRs are starting to display a lack of route running fundamentals, and O-line development hasn’t existed since Caldwell has been here. Maybe they’re afraid of the perspective that a fresh set of eyes from another program would bring to the locker room.

I'm not particularly interested in the portal itself but it's bigger than the portal...Dabo shouldn't be a "This is how we've always done it" coach. A coach with too much pride to adapt is a coach preparing to fail. Have your principles of your program that's all well and good. Bama does. But nick Saban wasn't afraid to see how the spread offense works and adjust the way he coaches to put players in a position to win. Dabo fears change which is never a good thing.

Times have changed. We will not be able to compete with the Alabama, Ohio States, etc...When you lose players to transfer portal you have to be able to replace that talent through the portal. Clemson has lost players on both sides of the ball. Yes we have talent on the OL , but they're at 2 years away from being able to compete at this level. Dabo arrogance will catch up with him.

So which is guys - coaching, or players? There are so many whiners on here complaining about everything. If you read the article - Dabo mentions that 99% of players in the portal are looking for more playing time. What that means is that these players aren't going to transfer to Clemson to be a backup. Clemson has tons of talented players right now - that's not the issue. If that was the issue, the portal might get used. The problem right now is coaching. If it's a terrible year I expect Dabo will make some changes in that regard.

Also, just because coach A does something and has success, doesn't automatically mean coach B will also have success. You're ignoring a multitude of other factors. That's some classic coot style logic.
