Bubba Chandler is about to get paid. The freshman Tigers quarterback had already indicated he would sign and therefore not play football at Clemson in the coming seasons, and multiple reports give a good picture as to why. Wow that’s very surprising for Pittsburg. I would have thought they’d given him a little less than $1M. Good for him for getting that much. I wonder how the prospects that were drafted ahead of him are going to feel about this. I doubt they’ll get paid around that much.

He had told them the minimum $$ number it would take for him to leave Clemson so it worked out great for Pittsburg and Bubba. It was reported that Bubba's number was at least $3m, and with Pitt knowing this they were able to still get their first and second round draft picks without wasting them on player that could potentially staying in school.
I don't know specifics of MLB Draft but I guess teams are allotted a "Bonus money slush fund" for every draft. I don't know how this fund is calculated but Pitts fund this year was $8.7m. Teams are not allowed to go over their slush fund without a heavy penalty and a decrease in their next year's fund. The slush fund is also decreased for the upcoming draft anytime they use a portion of the fund.
That said, it appears to have been good for both parties and is a good indication that Pitt definitely expects Chandler to be MLB player in the near future and not a long term player in the minor leagues.

Each draft selection is slotted a suggested or expected signing bonus amount. Pick 1 is the highest amount and it goes down for each subsequent pick.
Your draft pool bonus money is simply the sum of the pre-assigned "value" of each of your draft picks in the first 10 rounds.
You can then spend that money as you see fit, meaning you can go "below slot" on some guys and "above slot" on others. Clubs are "expected" not to exceed their pool, but they can. There are financial penalties and loss of future draft picks when they do that.

You hit the nail on the head explaining it. I really am amazed with the bonus he signed for. $3M is just above the slot value of pick # 23 overall! It really does surprise me they went that high to sign him but it also makes me feel better. He deserved to go in the first round but I think going to Clemson for those 3 weeks scared a lot of teams. Good luck in that organization Bubba. I hope I’m wrong about them…if not maybe you could get traded or sign with the Braves one day.

Way to go Bubba, we selfishly wanted you to stay but I’d go on the road for 870k + 3 million signing bonus any day of the week right now!
I know most of these guys on Tigernet make more money but that seems like a great deal to this blessed guy!

contract" NOT "Clemson QB set to land major contract". Bubba was never enrolled as a student at Clemson nor has he taken a snap as a QB with the Clemson football team. Sorry - but words matter and while I wish Bubba success and happiness he should never be referred to as a "Clemson QB". He was never a member of the Clemson football team and to refer to him as a "Clemson QB" gives him credit for something he never achieved.
