Report: Clemson pays out $200,000 settlement to former Tiger baseball player

Clemson University paid out over $200,000 for a medical malpractice settlement to former baseball player Grant Cox, according to a Greenville News review of public documents. According to a public document cited by the outlet, the alleged malpractice came in September 2016 after Cox had redshirted a Read Update »

Very interesting that this isn’t getting much commentary. This was during Monte’s second year as coach. Wonder how many former players successfully sued the school during Jack’s tenure? Should also easily be grounds for termination with cause. DRad just loves him some Monte Lee though.

This is a doofus comment even for you which is saying something. Do you think Monte did the medical examination of the ankle and then recommended the rehab activities? Dang....

I think he was aware that he was running the player through drills in a protective boot. I’ll ask again. How many former players of Jack’s 20+ year tenure successfully sued the program for negligence? Just a coincidence huh? And yes, sadly, sports medicine docs often act against the best interest of athletes. Often unintentionally as a result of bias. It must be nice to live in a vacuum and be unaware of the numerous scandals surrounding various Universities and their medical staff.

I will type slow so you can understand. Unless Monte went against the advice of our doctors/trainers he would be in no way responsible for these issues. What Jack had or did not have has zero bearing on this situation.

To recap, the doctors & trainers determine the rehab timing and protocol with the coach having no culpability if it goes wrong unless he does not follow their orders. The reason for this is the trainers and doctors are educated/trained to deal injuries/rehab. Again a doofus prospective even for you...

It’s unfair to blame Monte for this.

Jun 8, 2021, 6:24 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Report: Clemson pays out $200,000 settlement to former Tiger baseball player ]

Coaches don’t have medical training. They have no clue about the details of various injuries and how to rehab them. As a result, coaches have a whole staff of trainers, physicians, nutritionists, etc. to make decisions on diagnosis, treating, and rehabbing injuries and helping players with all facets of health. Heck, these days they even have sports psychologists and counselors when needed.

With that said, I agree with you that players in college as well as the professional ranks are frequently expected by training staffs and organizations to hurry back as fast as possible from injury. Players are often criticized for being weak if their recovery isn’t going as quickly as expected. All of this is ultimately unfair to the players.

Kinda like when Fields was “hurried” back into the game after he was planted? That was an amazing quick assessment made on the sideline.

Of course it could be coincidence.

That shouldn't be difficult to work out.

Considering the current political, legal, social environment we find ourselves it looks to me like we came out looking pretty darn good! It’s Often cheaper to settle out of court. Even people that know they will win in court will settle because it’s simply cheaper and better for everyone in the long run. Also, in-house counsel doesn’t typically handle these type of things. In-house counsel attorneys are not litigators. They are contract and compliance lawyers. Litigation is usually handled by an outside law firm, which is extremely expensive!

Extremely expensive. It gets messy too because staff are state employees. Before I retired, we dealt with this sort of thing way too often. It's a nothing burger. Shouldn't ever happen you hope but in this litigious society... What is the saying, two sides and then the truth. This is cheap for what it could have been.

Hope the kid and all parties involved are ok.

I obviously don’t know all the details, but this is what tends to happen when you have athletic trainers doing what a physical therapist should be doing. Clemson really needs to add experienced sports physical therapists to the athletic department. I’ve heard first hand stories about the training department...not good ones.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We would be in a better position if we had our own health professions school.

Jun 8, 2021, 7:08 PM

Whether it be medicine or physical therapy - or ideally both - athletic teams would provide an outstanding educational experience for students as well as a great teaching environment for professors, all while benefiting our athletic teams big time.

As it stands, we must rely on recruiting talented folks in those positions to Clemson, SC to serve this purpose. Or hire student trainers with limited medical knowledge. Neither is optimal.

It would probably be nice to see more student involvement and programs in sports medicine but that’s not the real issue, IMO.

The Clemson Athletic Department training and rehab has been focused on trainers for more than 30 years that I know of. They have totally rejected having PTs on staff and only have trainers. I think that’s about to change. I really respect most trainers but they have their place...it’s not rehab.

It’s really a shame that our athletes don’t get proper sports medicine. I know a lot that I can’t share here, but I know of many instances where our athletes (some current) have been harmed by not having the right professionals in place to help them. All because of one particular person. I’ve tried to tell the AD many times but nothing ever happens. I hear that may be changing soon.

Kids that have the means go outside Clemson to get proper treatment. Sometime they have to sneak around and not tell anyone they are going to an experienced PT to get decent treatment. It’s sad that a school like Clemson is lacking so much in its rehab.
