I Have To Agree After What Was Witnessed Last Year ---
Jun 20, 2022, 3:28 PM

Last year I was excited and ready to see DJ get after it. Then a molasses humanoid creature was at quarterback instead of what all of us fans was expecting. The O-line didn't have enough to go a full 12 rounds blow for blow with a D-line like Georgia's...but they tried. Then there was play calling...poor offensive execution...etc...
As the season went on there were some small steps of improvement. Now we are approaching another season and lots of important things that meant a lot to Clemson's staff was indeed gutted.
Respectful yet somewhat unproven pieces were put in those gutted places and this up and coming season also has me nervous. The first 5 games are a chance to see that this new Clemson can maybe make leaps and bounds throughout this coming season.
I'm nervous but I hope we over achieve.
Go Tigers!!

Herbie really watched last year!
He summed up DJ5's season and remedy for 2022. "Don't wait. (Not) hitch, hitch, hitch, sack. It's more hitch -- go. Be a runner." DJ did not move the chains on third down consistently, and it killed his passing stats too because he was forcing the ball.
Go back to Taj, DW4, KB, Trevor, and include Steve Fuller, Rodney Williams, Homer, Woody D, Charlie Whitehurst, Kyle Parker all ran for many first downs instinctively. They all ran the ball to move the chains. Too often DJ5 would hold the ball, get sacked, or force a pass, and trot off the field for a punt. When the play breaks down, commit to running quickly, move the chains, hit the deck. Start over on first down instead of punting. We had more 3 and outs in 2021 than I can ever remember, even when we were real bad...
Cade will pull it down and run for the 1st Down, that's what he did in high school and won championships. Same thing Homer, DW4 and Trevor did to win championships!
DJ5 has to react quickly this year or it will be a tough year for him. I hope he learned from 2021 and has a great year.

+1. Totally agree. I just hope Dabo isn’t stubborn and keeps Adan in when it’s obvious he hasn’t got it, as was the the case with not puttin in TL sooner.

DJU. It’s all about him right now and I just haven’t seen what needs to be there. He will need to improve considerably for Clemson to be in the big picture. Spring ball showed me nothing!

It showed me the same thing I saw all last year. Big Stinko is NOT the one to lead this offense. As another tigernetter said, he was 1 and 1 in 2020. And in 2021, he disappointed many including me. I want him to be better. My wants have not been satisfied. It maybe time to move on, next man up, whatever you want to call it. We have the leisure of a soft early schedule to make the determination whether or not to make that decision. Dabo's decision I should say. I hope he doesn't tarry.

I’m not convinced that the early schedule is that easy. Playing GT with a new coach in the Dome will not be a cake walk in the first game. Remember, I’m from the old days when my Tigers often opened the season in Atlanta … and that wasn’t good! My concern right now is: Can the Tiger QB out play the GT QB? I plan to be there! Do you?

I don't think we will show alot in game 1 as far as play calling goes but I think our defense will be ready to post a shutout. I see a healthy dose of running game and clock management with 15-20 passes. I think it's a 31-3 type of game...maybe 31-0. Regardless the head to head qb battle will be insignificant bc gt doesn't have a D like us and DJ doesn't have to perform as well as he would in a bigger game like NCST OR ND. GO TIGERS!!!

What happened to their production?

What happened to Kelly & Eric?
I mean, I know it's hard work to a certain degree making a podcast from home several days a week, but it really feels like they're just mailing it in; the sound quality, the lights, the ear strings, it's just weird to have a guest on nationally-broadcast show from two Clemson representatives who both live HERE to have these fixable production problems, it's hard to watch (& it used to be the opposite, so I don't know what changed), but I was compelled this time because of Herbstreit. I just think he's a fascinating part of what makes college football sincerely unique. Great stuff, especially about the portal.

DJ isn't the guy

Our entire season depends on Cade developing quickly and becoming the starter sooner than later. If he doesn't, we will waste another year of championship defense.
The O-line is my #2 concern. Cade obviously won't be DW4 as a freshman and he can't be running for his life every play because the defense doesn't respect our run game.

Last year, 2021, on our field, with our fans, we squeaked-out the GaT game, 14-8. The ending was too close. GaT kicked a late FG for 14-6, and a safety, with the GaT team bungling (losing) a time-out. Then they recovered an onside kick to have the ball, only needing a TD to win.
Our D and their lost TO won the game -- as mostly our offense cut not get first downs or scores. It was obvious that the coaches did not trust the Big Cinco 5, and the OL, and poor passes could not get us into FG range except for an early TD and a late TD.
Their QB was better than ours that day. AND their RB, Gibbs ( now at Bammer) was really good.
Our middle LB saved us from a late TD, forcing a short FG for GaT.
IF we get the same Big Cinco 5 and OL performances, expect a close game in ATL. Maybe a loss...
Expect a difficult game

Why though?

The talent gap is SO vast, why bench the starting QB regardless?
I agree with Herbie that we have maybe 2 games on the schedule that could look competitive & should be fun to watch, but if WE as Clemson Nation aren't prepared for a talent like DJU to be successful and lead this team through this schedule, I don't know but it kinda feels disappointing, like taking being so extremely talent-rich completely for granted, know what I mean?

We gave up very few sacks last season and DJ held the ball FOREVER so many times. Our running game and oline will be just fine as long as we have even the slightest pulse in the passing game where teams can't put 8 in the box every play. 200yds rushing, 200 yards passing seem like realistic numbers to expect weekly unless we get some great qb play. Our defense will give the offense alot of opportunities to score and good field position often. Good D & special teams will take us pretty far this season alone. If we come out with some offensive firepower on top we will be a very tough team to beat. Go Tigers!!!

Is it REALLY that crazy to suggest a guy with a talent ceiling as high as Clemson's starting QB could be successful this year with this roster against this schedule?
I'm less concerned with winning than how we're going to treat DJU leading this team to another ACC title and the playoff. It's crazy but it feels like we're the only ones not prepared for DJU to be as good as we've seen him at his best, if not even better, & that we'll do the same thing to the next QB (Cade) when he struggles while yet another talented, green QB makes us proclaim him to be the future, know what I mean?
It's frustrating, but try to be prepared to celebrate Clemson's starting QB, DJU, to have incredible success this year outright, & GO TIGERS!

To be fair,

It's explicitly part of the episode & interview we're talking about here, though, to be fair.
For example, "DJ could have a monster year and shut everybody up. Because we saw what he could do the year before."
Again, all I'm suggesting is to be prepared for DJU to lead THIS roster with this schedule to an ACC title & the playoff, & consequently to consider how we treat him & Cade, et al.

If DJ doesn't improve this year, we may see a similar situation unfold when KB eventually had to make way for TL to start. Obviously, I'd love to see DJ crush it this year but was last year an anomoly or can we expect to see more of the same??
We'll know by game 3-4, that much is for certain.

I don't know what Uga did to DJ last year
Jun 22, 2022, 9:20 AM
|
|
but they obviously took away his confidence. It's all upstairs with DJ.
He has the arm. Maybe the weight loss will help his footwork.
But during and after the opening last year, his fundamentals were shot. Fix the upstairs, then maybe he can improve. However, I would have thought after the next 3-4 games last year that he could have gotten back on track. I saw glimmers of improvements here and there. But even in the bowl game, we completed just a hand full of long passes.
Is it possible DJ will be great? Yes. Probable? Not so sure, but it's up to him and the coaches.

You have to remember, the receivers didn't exactly help DJ either, too many drops. Once Bo (that's how I spell it, danggit) came around the passing game got much better. We need Willians and Ngata to stay healthy, plus to new guys to contribute immediately.
