Movies at the Y were great

Jun 12, 2020, 10:22 AM

Even in the late 80's it was a great place to watch a movie. Just a step back in time....

News from USuC...
"Richardson was the 20th Gamecock arrested since Spurrier was hired in Nov. 2004"

Fluxus®
"As I watched the game yesterday I couldn't help but feel crushed. We beat Furman by 4 TDs, but to me it looked like we got whipped."

"George Bush, we are reliably informed by the media, has the IQ of a moron, though how he matriculated from Yale and Harvard or flew an F-106 will remain an unexplained mystery. Doubtless his father bribed the airplane to fly itself."

I remember going to see "The Groove Tube" at the early show one evening in 1974, and then calling a friend and taking her to the late show. I want to say it cost $1, but it might have been cheaper than that. It was a great way to spend an evening before cable, video tapes/DVDs, and the internet. I also vividly recall seeing "The Wind and the Lion" and "A Clockwork Orange" there.

I remember John Wayne film festivals - one week of his westerns and war movies, and “The Graduate” showing just before exam week. Plus, you got a cartoon before the movie started! Seems like the popcorn was dirt cheap too

I love these old pictures, most any type of old picture that depicts life lived at that moment in time. It makes me feel humble, and realize that change is inevitable, whether we welcome it or try to thwart it.

The Y!

This brings back a lot of memories. I learned to swim in the pool, went to see Elvis movies in the theater, hung out as a teenager playing pool and hoops, etc. I think there was a room in the basement that was turned into a coffee shop late in the '60s.

It had become part of the engineering college when my son got there in 2010. Coming up through town, it was where the campus really began. (Mell Hall was the Post Office still.)

Lot's of things have changed in my few years, but still something special when you get to the campus,

Saw a bunch of Friday night movies there in the early 80's. I took my future (and still) wife there in '81 to see The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly. The place was packed. We all watched for about 10 minutes until we figured out it was dubbed in Spanish. They gave each of us our $1.00 back. Good memories.

I think the flicks at the Y were 50 cents in my day, late 60s. Went many times (when I should have been studying.) The two I remember most were the Henry Fonda turkey "Battle of the Bulge" and John Wayne's "In Harm's Way," still a great flick - saw it again on cable not too long ago. Popcorn was cheap, too. Crowds of us dormies could be kind of rowdy at times - I think our commentaries hurled at the screen may have been the inspiration for Mystery Science Fiction Theater 3000. Fond memories.

Stayed in one of the 15 dorm rooms in '86-'87 on top level. Watched soccer games from roof while sipping a brew. Great rooms if you could get one.

I stayed in one of the Holtzendorf YMCA dorm rooms on the top floor Fall of '82 and Spring of '83. I stayed in the right rear corner room. It was my favorite room for the 3 years that I was at Clemson.

My roommate got the room through lottery/waiting list. Dont think too many people knew they were there. Perfect location to classes/downtown.

A fellow Mech. Eng. major stayed in room the semester before

Jun 13, 2020, 3:40 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: LOOK: Clemson Historic photo #72 'Clemson YMCA in the 1920s' ]

He asked me to request the vacated spot in the room. I think that it was because he had stayed there the semester before, and that we both requested for me to be his new roommate since we were both ME majors. At the time, I didn't realize that the hall was coveted. After staying there I realize why. We were able to build a second floor platform in the room due to the 12 foot ceilings. The RA didn't like it, and tried to find regulations to make us disassemble it, but it was free standing and not attached to the room in any way. He was defeated and pissed off!:)

Wow! More good memories. We would be there in the auditorium after evening meal on Sundays to watch a free movie. Loved Mr. Holzendorf (sp) who ran the place.

Played basketball many times in the gym in the 60's. Once against "Branch" Tree Rollins' younger brother. At least that's what I remember.
