Loved the way Johnstone snaked around from one end to the other. It would take a good ten minutes to walk the entire thing. And each section was divided by a huge metal door.

It was the room DIRECTLY above the underpass through F section. Where the garbage dumpsters were at. The sound of that beeping garbage truck slamming those dumpsters up and down EVERY OTHER DAY was enough for me to relocate up to C8 ASAP, with a very nice view looking right down over the plaza to the entry of Harcombe. Probably saved my hearing too.

I was in C-801, the fire alarm being right outside my room and I slept through fire alarms two different times...
my roommate made sure it was a false alarm both times and just let me sleep... lol

If I remember correctly, the top floor in any section of Johnstone was 9, and that was only in sections A and B. But the ground floor there was, maybe, 5 or 6. I was on E-5, and there were two floors below mine and, I think, one above. (Really can't remember for sure.) And then the last section went down to floor 1. So the different sections had different floors. Was it actually possible to go from one end of Johnstone to the other without changing floors? Maybe 6, but I think that cut through the loggia.

the loggia one day looking out over the quad when I noticed the heavy equipment rolling in. They then started to break up the quad's concrete which was the first step in building the new Edgar Brown Student Union.

To make a long story short. I worked for the company involved with the removal of the "Old Quad" to build the new student center in the summer of 1973. I attended class in the morning dressed in my laborer attire (With my hard hat and my bologna sandwich). Naturally, everyone knew my dual responsibilities. One afternoon when I got to work; my boss asked if I had operated a jackhammer (Which I had and could). My Boss told me that since I was a student and former student he was giving me the "Honor" of removing the first chunk of concrete from the quad. Neat remembrance for me. C L E M in Cadence count!

I roomed in C-801 but I don't recall another floor being above me. I don't have any pics of the outside of Johnstone from when I was there from '85 - '90, but I would say with a lot of hesitation that is Johnstone B.

The westmost "wing" of Sirrine Hall is aimed at it. The last rooms where the top hall terminates would have had an outer layer of tin pointing west. I bet it got HOT, as well as the inside layer of tin! I'm pretty sure that there was no insulation in between. I had the corner room on B-6 for a half semester, and I know that there was no insulation between the outer and inner layer of tin on the east wall.

From this photo, it appears that the west end wall was brick. I bet those 2 end rooms were neat rooms to stay in. They may have even had access to the roof via a door at the end of the hall, or their ledge? The Tin Can penthouse!

I served 2 years in the cans from fall '72- spring 74. I walked down the hall to that spot a lot; there was a great view towards the west. Technically it was in building D, as the floors below it were D. Yet it was numbered as extending the hall in C probably since it was only 6 rooms on the other side of the metal door separating C from D. It was the only part of the cans that ended in space instead of at a brick stairwell. Since the above floor also ended at the stairwell, my guess is from an engineering reason they didn't want 2 floors ending at the same point. This extension may have served as additional support. Anyway, I enjoyed walking there on those dead weekends when the whole place seemed empty.

When coming in from downtown on a Friday or Saturday night, It was easier for me to go up the four steps to B-6 and walk all the was around to E-6. Besides, passed three bathrooms on the way. The biggest rooms were F-513, 413, and 313. They were the old battalion commanders rooms. Only trouble was the trash can for the hall was outside the wall by the stairs. Popular cheery bomb site.

I don’t care what else was going on during that time period, what the initial plan for it was, or how much money it might have saved Clemson. Just a really stupid idea with zero foresight.
