Childhood memories are great. Lunch at either Dan's or the Clemson House with my grandparents before games. Kids got into games for next to nothing so tickets not needed.

As a freshman "rat" in 1966 I remember having to take food orders for all the upper classmen on the hall to make the nightly Dans Food run. I also remember Dan paying off large bets at a back table when Clemson lost a football game. I think he lost the restaurant and was hired back as the manager.

I too was a "rat" in 1966 and lived in Cope which was a predominantly upperclassmen dorm at the time. Not a lot of "rats" lived there, so my roommate and I had to take so many Dan's food orders we could barely carry all of them. All of the juniors and seniors felt sorry for us, and no one complained about not getting the correct order.

While we had our hair cut and wore bennies, the Rat process went out my freshman year in 1956. I also spent a lot of time in Dan's as it was the Hang Out

I enjoyed eating at Dan's while in high school and college. The thing I liked most besides his hamburgers and fries were all the Clemson athletes pictures from all sports hung on the wall. There were many players that I didn't know or where all that great but they were displayed. He must have had a source at the athletic department that gave him the pictures.

Every time I saw the SNL skit with John Belushi, et al:
“Cheeseburger, cheeseburger, cheeseburger... everybody eat the same thing...”
I fondly remembered Dan’s. (Class of ‘68)

Actually grew up in Clemson in the 50's/60's. DW Daniel 69.

Butch was in my class. i knew Dan's well and ate there and his place out on the Pendleton Rd. now called Macs. Does anyone have pictures of the old Macs from when it was a Trolley car? and called Dan's?

We ate there a number of times out in the parking lot before they built the first McDonalds in Anderson.

Dan's son was a good athlete, he played football, basketball, and baseball at Daniel. Frank Howard had given Butch a Clemson helmet to play YMCA football. Butch let me borrow that helmet one year, and I thought I was the baddest Y football player in the league that year!

This is Fat Rat. Are any of the kids around that played at the "Y" from '69 to '72 in football. I coached the 8, 9, and 10 year old players.

For those of us "unfortunates", who were not students when Dan's was around, where exactly in downtown Clemson was his business located? Thanks.

I attended Clemson between '54 and '58. Dan's was favorite spot and had the best burgers I've ever tasted. When I first arrived in Clemson, Dan's was just around the corner down one level on College Ave. I think it was the next year they moved around the corner (intersection of Hwy 91 and College Ave.) between Hoke Sloan and the drug store. A few years later Dan expanded into the Drug Store making Dan's twice the size. I will forever remember those tasty hamburgers and the pictures that covered the walls.

Could not have survived w/o Dan's hamburger and fries. Especially at night while hitting the books. Best HB and fries ever, even to this day. Dan always greeted you w/a smile. Many a student lost lots of nickels in that pin ball machine. That sucker would tilt if you looked at it too hard.

For those of us out-of-staters that did not have the opportunity to go home on weekends, Dan’s had a back room where on Sunday afternoon/evening he would serve sirloin steaks “family style.” My memory from the late 60’s may fail me, but I seem to remember that those steaks covering the dinner plate completely and were accompanied by common serving dishes with mounds of fries and onion rings! Salad with gobs of thousand island dressing and, of course, pitchers of sweet tea. No concern for cholesterol, clogged arteries, or weight then! I seem to remember $7 as the going rate....small fortune then.

Pledged a fraternity in the fall if '79, and by then Dan's was gone. But each night of the week 2-3 pledges would go to the house for "Dan's Duty" it was called! We would go through the house taking orders from the brothers for what they would like from the Student Union grill. I can still taste those bacon egg an cheese sandwiches! Obviously years before the pledges would head to Dan's!

Attended Clemson from 66 to 70 and Johnny Carson would be coming on Tv about the same time we would go to Dan's just about every week night. To this day if I hear the theme music from the show I can actually taste Dan's fries.

last picture. We had a virtual duplicate of that one in my childhood home, except it sat on the floor in the corner of the living room. My "growing up" home was an old two story frame house, complete without central heat or air, and a lot of drafts. My younger brother and I shared a bedroom just off the living room until older brothers / sisters grew up and moved out, and then got our own bedrooms upstairs. I can remember listening for the sound of the pilot clicking on for that heater when our mom would get up first thing in the morning during the winter months and set the thermostat up. We would wait for the noise of the fan coming on, and then fight tooth and nail to be the first one out there to sit in front of that heater. Funny the childhood memories that randomly pop up 60+ years on. :)

Anyone remember the football schedule painted on Dan's outside back wall near the service station behind Dan's? It listed opponent, home or away, game date and ticket price. In 1967, all tickets were $6 except the final with USC which was 7 whole bucks!
