They never did. Not all 5 stars are really that good. Tigers have done well in picking the right fit rather than rankings.
This year is clearly an anomaly. Key defense recruits dropping out had raised some question marks. We will rebound.
No one would have predicted our rise in 2014. This will be 2.0 of that story. Need patience

Not sure what to make of this. On the surface it looks like the coaching staff grossly under performed in recruiting this year. I want to believe there is a plan the fans don't see. How are teams like UNC, ARK, MIZZOU, Stanford out doing Clemson? Out of most of the top remaining players we weren't even on the list of teams being considered. What is the explanation? Buzz is at a 10 year low and that is a fact. I'll still be rooting for the Tigers.

Signing 20 2-stars counts the same as signing 10 4-stars (or even 8 5-stars) in some of the rankings. So signing 20 two-stars and one 1-star might out a team above a team with fewer but much better quality players.
Clemson's class got hurt by the 3 last-minute decommits.

Interesting stuff. Danny did very well in recruiting and in performance. Hatfield not very good recruiting but his teams were pretty good. West not bad, but his teams were not very good. Bowden not very good, his teams were okay, but not great. Dabo the best in both recruiting and performance.

What happened in 2003-4 under Tommy Bowden? Those were worse than Hatfield and West years.

Most don't remember the AARC, the Clemson committee of 5 so called academic advisors that controlled football and basketball recruiting 2002-2007. The AARC severely damaged recruiting during those years.
That terrible situation was sanctioned by TDP and Jim Barker. Coaches had to go before the committee and plead their case for approval of every recruit. Most recruits didn't know until signing day if they would be allowed to sign a LOI to attend Clemson, and we lost many talented players we could have signed.
Prospective recruits were well aware of Clemson's AARC, shied away, and other school recruiters used it as a recruiting weapon. We only got players who really had their hearts set on playing for Clemson.
Had the AARC not existed, Tommy Bowden would have had much greater success. He and his assistants were recruiting with hands tied behind their backs.
Mickey Plyler exposed the AARC on signing day 2007 with his blog here on Tigernet. This place exploded like it never had before or has since. Most Tigerneters sent strong messages to TDP, Jim Barker, BOT members, and AARC committee members. This was a hot place for about a week, and some AARC members filed police reports about personal threats.
By the end of that week, the AARC had been reevaluated and has not been heard from since, nor has its committee members.

Hatfield inherited coach Danny's team and did remarkably well for a couple years.... coach Ford signed an unrecruited 2 star out of SC named Levon Kirkland because he had one more spot in the class and wanted a defensive guy. Things happen....

Stanford and UNC are elite universities with good athletic programs and it is never a surprise they do well in recruiting. Arkansas and Missouri just seem like regional teams that are not relevant nationally and I have not looked at where their recruits are from.

In today's world of football, it appears recruiting needs to net starters or it won't be long until uncle portal calls. If Bama, A&M, Georgia and others sign 25 or more guys they all can't play so how long will they be there? We can't survive several years of negative numbers but if we are fortunate with injuries next year, we will be fine.
