This kid cannot catch a break….I will say that throughout all of trials and tribulations in the program who has been 1000% optimistic through all of it. His attitude and character is something no one can question.

Hey Tigernet....

When will you ball-up and ask the coaches why Clemson has so many foot injuries every year?
I'll count them and reply to this post, but I can name 5 foot (to knee) injuries in less than three years. Do other teams experience the same numbers?

I think a solid, hard-hitting article looking into this would be appropriate....

Also, if you are asking tnet to "ball up" and do something, be careful, they may ask you to "ball up" and donate to the site.

A major factor missing in this report is ...

Aug 15, 2022, 1:56 PM

... field type: Natural or Turf

Artificial turf has a gripping property and less 'forgiveness' to stress on its surface. For natural grass, stress to the grass kicks up some dirt and tears the grass, sparing additional stress on the athlete that I believe happens on artificial turf.

Also, the ground for artificial turf is harder than natural grass, so constant pounding (foot and body) on the turf is harder on the body.

I believe this causes more joint (ligament and tendon), muscular, and impact injuries than natural grass. I've seen two players get concussions from hitting their head on artificial turf. I never saw that happen on natural grass with 20x more experience playing on grass.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, my beliefs are founded from playing soccer on both natural and artificial turf over a long period of time (35+ years).

Xavier has such a great attitude! Wouldn't be surprised to see him return sooner rather than later. Praying for quick recovery.

Not asking for his medical diagnosis but

Aug 15, 2022, 2:11 PM

foot injury could cover several things. Do we know if it was a sprained ankle, broken toe, broken bone, etc?

Re: Not asking for his medical diagnosis but

Aug 15, 2022, 2:29 PM

Not a Dr, but seen a fair amount of issues. If surgery is required, it's a broken bone or tendon/ligament tear. Since recovery is 4-6 weeks, it's not tendon/ligament. He fractured something in his foot.

I suspect HIPA laws are restricting the specifics of the injury. Had heard it might be a toe, but that was never confirmed.

The rolling injury rock continues to gather moss.
Year after year.? I'm sure we're not alone.

I hate this for XT. I hope he recovers quickly. This does bring up red flags with the injuries happening again. They might want to practice more on tge grass.

Ok, I'm just a girl, never played football, I know football is a violent sport, hell, I've had injuries playing tennis for goodness sakes, but coming off a year of so many injuries and now all these happening in camp, ###? Yes, that's a run on sentence. Just wondering aloud lol!

Most people here seem to be assuming that it’s just “bad luck”

Aug 15, 2022, 4:59 PM

and random chance.

Perhaps, but I don’t think we should discount the possibility that it’s something else.

This is why I believe we should be examining every facet of our program. How we practice, lift, do agility drills, nourish, and recover are all potential areas.

Why do you just assume these things are *not* happening?

Aug 15, 2022, 5:11 PM

What evidence do you have that the “possibility” is being discounted?

How do you know “every facet” of the program is not being examined?

Are you inside the program to the extent that you are privy to such detailed information?

BTW: What happened to our star basketball player? Is this type of scrutiny being given the the string of injury issues with PJ Hall?

Re: Why do you just assume these things are *not* happening?

Aug 15, 2022, 5:43 PM

I would hope, and probably presume we're taking a hard look at everything. Dabo's all about the little details and I'm sure ALL the major programs are reviewing and sharing information concerning such as this.

That said Due, you can't equivocate PJ's situation with anyone else. His injuries date back to junior high ball. Actually Brad and staff encouraging him to get permanent help.

As physicality of practice decreases, we seem to endure more injuries?

Aug 15, 2022, 9:16 PM [ in reply to Why do you just assume these things are *not* happening? ]

When Dabo took over as HC, one of his mantras was to increase the physicality of the team. He was all about the contact and he had several different versions of the Oklahoma drills. 3-on-3, RB on 3, 1-on-1, etc, etc. First the NCAA cancelled allowing 2-a-days but then they strictly limited the full contact drills after the big blowout about CTE like 4-5yrs ago. Since then the NCAA reduced the about of practice hours also.

Combine all the above contact drills that Dabo used to use and our injury rates seemed to be substantially less. I think contact is a necessity for multiple reasons. I think your body gets acclimated to more contact therefore manages impacts ans stresses better. But through more contact, the player actually learns how to control their body more effectively so they learn how to fall, learn how to soften blows by deflecting them with positioning, learn that they stressed there knee or whatever through repetitive action and you develop muscle memory to reduce those stresses.

But, with more limited contact in practice, you lose the opportunity for muscle memory, you don't get acclimated to contact, you don't learn how to take impacts or falling safer. I truly believe it's a double edged sword, while trying to reduce body stressors thinking you are being smarter, it causes the opposite effect and allows more knees, shoulders, hematomas, sprains, etc.

I could be wrong, but I think there is something to this.

Re: As physicality of practice decreases, we seem to endure more injuries?

Aug 15, 2022, 11:00 PM

This makes sense.

I knew a man who was very prominent in sports medicine say that most college football injuries happen in situations where you're not fully focused and not going full speed.

That was why early season games worried his staff so much because in those days, the first couple of games were almost always one-sided affairs where the players tended to slack off, let their guard down, and get distracted.

Is this going to be another "here we go again" year? Too many injuries already and we haven't even played a game that counts yet.
