Short leash? If dabo was 4-18 during his first 2 seasons at Clemson do you think we would of kept him around?

Re: TNET: Former Clemson coach fired at Arkansas

Probably. We had paid Tommy Bowden way too much, and there wasn't much left (so TDP said) with the big buyout expense we owed Tommy. Things have changed now, and there have been riches bestowed on our program, and our university, with all the success we have enjoyed. I do get your point, though.

Re: TNET: Former Clemson coach fired at Arkansas

Bowden’s buyout was $3.5M, which seems so reasonable now. Compare that to the $18-22M the coots are on the hook for.

Nov 10, 2019, 7:13 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Former Clemson coach fired at Arkansas ]

No way, he would have been sent packing or, they would have hired someone willing to retain him as our WRC bc he was good at that before becoming our HC, but I am so thankful that Dabo was willing to seek advice from friends he had made in the college FB business before shooting himself in the head, bc his dreams of what he wanted to do as a HC has a miracle for Clemson FB and Tiger Nation!!!

In Dabo Swinney I do trust to lead our Clemson Tiger FB program...

4 playoffs, 5 divisional wins, 4 ACC championships, played in 3 NCG's, and brought home to Clemson two NC trophies, and looking for a 3d!!! Go Dabo, Go Tigers!!!!

Going 4-18 overall, 0-14 in the SEC

Nov 10, 2019, 2:00 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Former Clemson coach fired at Arkansas ]

losing by an average of 21 points with no power 5 wins is not a short leash. Arkansas has been awful under Chad.

Re: Going 4-18 overall, 0-14 in the SEC

Nov 10, 2019, 2:11 PM

Arkansas has been a dumpster fire for years. The ashes have been swirling that program for probably 10 years. While I agree The Chad should have done more, that program is going to take years to recover. They should have kept him a bit longer in order clear out salary cap from Bilemi(however you spell it). I'm just wondering who from Sabans staff will take this job

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree it was a tough situation to inherit.

Nov 10, 2019, 8:16 PM

I don't think Arkansas's AD and president expected Chad to come in and seriously challenge for a division title anytime soon. But I bet they did expect Arkansas to show improvement, and they didn't. It's one thing to clearly be behind Alabama, LSU, Auburn, and Texas A&M at first, but they haven't even been competitive in SEC games.

What's worse is that some of their out of conference losses were very bad. Since Chad was hired, they have lost to:

Colorado State 34-27
North Texas 44-17
San Jose State 31-24
Western Kentucky 45-19

I don't think Arkansas should be losing to those schools, no matter how down they have been lately. I don't believe that Arkansas is at talent deficiency compared to those schools, so it only makes sense that there is a coaching issue at play.

I think Chad is a good football mind, but he wasn't ready to be the head coach at a program like Arkansas. I hope he lands on his feet soon. I expect that he will, possibly as a head coach at a group of 5 school.

His reach exceeded his grasp ... he was too ambitious.

Nov 10, 2019, 11:58 AM

He was always in too much of a rush to get to the next level.

This should be instructive to other great coordinators when contemplating a HC opportunity.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He thought he could jump to the top like Dabo

Nov 10, 2019, 12:00 PM

but there is only one Dabo

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: He thought he could jump to the top like Dabo

Nov 10, 2019, 7:26 PM

But Dabo didn't jump right to the top, Dabo played for and worked under some very good HCs and made a lot of good friends with FB minds that he could ask when he didn't know. Chad never played college FB, and he never had a big time college job coaching until he came to Clemson with Dabo figuring it all out himself. While Chad was trying to perfect his offense at the college level with better talent than he had at either school he rushed to to be a college HC, and he stumbled and fell flat on his face with the very first big college HC job that he had. Even reasonable thinking fans know that it doesn't work that way without a lot of friends that is willing to help you some on the way to try and become a successful college FB HC....

Nov 10, 2019, 12:07 PM [ in reply to His reach exceeded his grasp ... he was too ambitious. ]

Kinda glad he was ambitious. Im thankful for his time at Clemson bc JS and TE were able to learn a thing or 2 from him but We were much better without him. He had no clue what to do with Cole Stoudt. Did you see how much better Cole got once we hired a real QB coach? He also would get way too pass happy. We would of beat the coots in 2012/2013 if Chad just kept with what was working, running the football.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That is the correct assessment.

Nov 10, 2019, 2:10 PM [ in reply to His reach exceeded his grasp ... he was too ambitious. ]

He had SMU on a nice upward trajectory after taking over when they had hit rock bottom. If he'd just stayed put, he'd be enjoying top-20 success & his stock would still be rising.

For a variety of reasons, there are some HC jobs that just shouldn't be touched. Arkansas is one of them: a program that historically has had success (even if that seems like ancient history nowadays) & this a school & fan base with high expectations; taking over a program at a time when it was depleted in talent; being in a small-population state without much D1-level talent & thus with the need to recruit successfully out of state; & having such a huge mountain to climb with the conference & division they are in.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: That is the correct assessment.

Nov 10, 2019, 2:47 PM

Correct. And their glory years were in the old SWC when they played Texas schools every year and could recruit from there. In the SEC, where are they supposed to recruit from, Florida?

Similar problem to Nebraska being in the wrong conference.

Re: His reach exceeded his grasp ... he was too ambitious.

Nov 10, 2019, 2:15 PM [ in reply to His reach exceeded his grasp ... he was too ambitious. ]

Imagine what would have happened had he stayed at SMU. he very well could have developed that program into a perennial top 25. They are certainly showing out this year.

Nov 10, 2019, 7:36 PM

Mustcoot just might offer The Chad the OC job for the coots, and I think that would be an improvement for them, and if not, he would get his second firing in just a few years apart, and that would probably send him back to coaching HS FB again somewhere deep in the heart of Texass!!!

that he should have remained at SMU, honing his HC skills.

Still credit his efforts at Clemson, which after his departure evolved into our Co-OC's now.

Dabo would have hired another OC that I believe would have been just as good, or maybe better with more college experience. I do not believe that it was bc of Chad that Dabo has been successful, not for a second!!!

You’ve got to believe Chad Morris is a glaring example of how good men and good coordinations do not necessarily good head coaches. I’m sure Brent Venables is watching this and feels good about what he has and where he is. I know I am.

I think he could still be a good head coach. He was in too much of a hurry and took a tough gig. Following Biliema did him no favors, they were set up for ground and pound and did not have the pieces in place for moving to Chads offense. He would have been better served to keep winning at SMU and gotten a better aligned team to go into.

Arkansas was a good opportunity though

Nov 10, 2019, 2:23 PM

It wasn’t something like Kansas or Vanderbilt.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The worst thing that happened to Arky was Texas AM

Nov 10, 2019, 2:34 PM

joining the SEC. kids from Texas that wanted to play in SEC (and were not highly recruited by Bama/LSU) used to end up in Arky. They had decent runs. However w addition of TAMU to SEcmC, those kids no longer leave Texas.

Bilema and Chad couldn’t get recruits. The next coach will not get recruits. Arky is the Vandy of the West.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Former Clemson coach fired at Arkansas

Nov 10, 2019, 2:26 PM

That revolving door HC thing is really catching on in the SEC. They all want to turn into Tennessee.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's b/c they all have such insanely high expectations

Nov 10, 2019, 5:33 PM

. . . & championship-caliber football NOW. All schools have expectations to win & fans will demand that coaches be fired if they can't deliver - we are certainly no exception in that regard. But at schools like Tennessee, LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Florida & Georgia, the pressure is just off the charts. Problem is, not everybody can be winners & champions at the same time, & when ADs/boosters/fans have so little patience & don't allow coaches to have even a single down year, they just might discover that they can't find a big name or proven winner or even a promising up-&-comer willing to take the job.
