the moat

Feb 6, 2020, 2:00 PM

the moat or "Seneca River Basin" is where all storm runoff from the entire campus goes. It can only handle so much.

The Army Corps has pumps to take the excess into Hartwell. It's a matter of them starting the pumps up early enough in advance to prevent the canals and Jervey Meadows from flooding.

All the football practice area used to be a swampy area, they will flood. The high ground was Death Valley. Strom Thurmond made them build the two levees to keep from flooding Death Valley and that end of campus when they built Lake Hartwell. East Beach was on the other side of The Seneca River from campus. Not as bad as building New Orleans or Houston on swampland. They did have to reinforce both Levees in the late 1970’s.
Flooding is preferable to a ### break!

HOLY MOLY!

Feb 6, 2020, 2:02 PM

That’s bad already with more rain coming! Lots of drainage work needs to be done and getting the root balls of those leaning trees back in the ground will be difficult from the looks of it.

I did not know the ocean's high tide would reach Clemson. Trump will get it fixed. :)

Build in the bottoms of a former major tributary of the Savannah River and on some level you gotta see this coming. Think New Orleans.

Yeah. Not a surprise. That entire area is in a known flood zone. I’m sure building FFE were raised above expected flood...but could still create problems getting in/out.

No wonder DRAD checking into turf drainage

I blame Dale Gilbert reducing his weatherman hours for this. :)

heartbreaking

Feb 6, 2020, 3:57 PM

The photos are heartbreaking and a reminder of the damage it can cause. Our side yard floods and it comes from adjacent farmland. It comes in like whitewater - hard and fast when we get pummeled with major amounts of rain. Our basement has been flooded and we pump water around the clock. I pray it stops and the water recedes on campus and in the Upstate.

We have had some pretty heavy rain here in cootlumbia also, I have had to turn the waste water pump on in my pool twice already today, and I pump it down about an inch below the skimmers and just run my circulation from the bottom drains, but there are times when you gotta do what you gotta do!!! :)
