`1.The top five picks will not be quarterbacks 2. DJ will not be a top five pick...I would be very happy if he goes in top 3 rounds!
I'm also pretty confidant Van Dyke will go ahead of DJ.

Not sure which is funnier the Panthers drafting the Clemson player or DJ getting drafted much less a top 5 pick.

Exactly! I came here with the express purpose to remind everyone PANTHERS DONT DRAFT CLEMSON PLAYERS.
Ever.
This is the team that passed on Isaiah Simmons because Isaiah deserved a better team. "Carolina thought Simmons was the best athlete available but that he was a better fit on a veteran team because of his ability to play multiple positions." So instead of a Swiss Army knife they drafted a paperweight.

Yes Panthers don’t draft Clemson players cause they prefer loosing. Shame too since they played 1st year in Death Valley

Indeed it would be great if this happened.
I'll be placing a big bet on this one.
Might as well gamble my allowance on something big rather than waste on some McNuggets.

He hit 67% of his passes as a true freshman. In mop up

duty and two starts he threw for nearly 1000 yards, he had 5 TDs and no INTs, and he had a QB rating that was nearly 40 points better than his sophomore year. He was more elusive, he moved around in the pocket, and he worked through progressions. He of course set records at Notre Dame and Clemson as well.. as a true freshman.
He has the physical potential.
He's lost weight and got in better shape. That's step 1. Getting out of his own head is step 2. He just needs to play free and loose, and let the instincts and skills he showed in HS (5*) and as a freshman take over.
We didn't necessarily see step 2 in the spring game, but maybe some of that is attributable to split squads and a lack of starters. I don't know, but as a Clemson man who appreciates DJ's willingness to come back to Clemson from clear across the country and put forth his best effort for our program - that means something. He could have bailed out, moved back out west, and undoubtedly someone would have picked him up. But he wants to be the starting QB at Clemson.
So I do understand many folks' apprehension about DJ being a 1st rounder, but I can't let go of the fact he's shown 1st round potential as a true freshman. I don't know about top 5, but he's shown flashes and there's no reason for us fans to trash him as this situation works out.
Either he'll get his head on straight and mechanics worked out or he won't, but let's hold off on trashing a guy who truly wants to be a Clemson Tiger. Let it play out.

THANK YOU!!!!! So glad someone else is seeing past the horrible season he had last season. He has shown flashes of being great and has been 10000000% committed to Clemson even after all the hateful comments he's received. I don't think I personally could/would stick it out! I doubt 99% of the DJU haters would either if they were in his cleats! Dude is one of the most humble young men I've ever seen, a true Tiger through & through. Hope he has the season that will make him a top 5 pick and win the Heisman just to rub the noses of all his haters in it.

As we have seen, we are in an era where actual performance in games, on the football field, means almost nothing compared to perceived potential based on measurable physical characteristics and performance in specific football related drills. I don't know why we even bother to play the games anymore; we should just declare teams who perform the best in drills as the winners.

I agree with you, I'm just making what I feel is a sad but not that far-off observation. Remember the #1 overall NFL pick this year was not even the best player on his defense; probably not even the 2nd or 3rd best.

we will have won our next National Championship without a doubt. Based on his struggles last year, for him to rise to that level and an NFL team pick him in the top 10, his performance would have to be tremendous all season long.
I for one and pulling for him. Maybe being heathy, being surrounded by more experienced players, better O-line play, and having some receivers that can both block and catch will make all the difference.

I hope DJU has a phenomenal season, for himself and all of Clemson Nation. But have you seen our O line? It's been our weakest link for the last couple seasons. Our wrs', based on last year's performance, thought they didn't have to try, just show up. Dabo needs to put his boot up a few butts and bring some pain.

Hopefully, losing a good bit of weight, coupled with much better OL play and some better receiving can get him to a top NFL caliber talent. It does seem a bit of a stretch at this juncture, but let's all hope we have several great QB's on the team next season and into the future.

Bresee isn't eligible for the NFL draft in 2023, for starters, and he literally has Myles Murphy in the first round in the graphic in this story.

But I remember DJU's talent when we saw near his ceiling in 2020.
Between his talent ceiling, his size & strength, mental toughness & his lack of injuries, I don't know why it's such a surprise to so many that a guy like DJ could be drafted high.
It's a passing league more than ever, too.
After seeing what happened to Trevor last year & his record with an uncompetitive Jaguars team, is it really that crazy to suggest high-ceiling talent can struggle to perform with bad teams?
2022 is about to be a blast. I hope y'all are ready. Go Tigers!

The reason you're getting slammed for this is because you're relying on two games as a freshman when teams had 0 tape on him. You say Clemson was a bad team last year and that's the reason, but that's absurd. Clemson had a top 10 talented offense and a top 5 talented defense. They played in the weakest P5 conference last year. You're right, the NFL is a a passing league. So let's put DJ in perspective.
There were 105 QBs with enough passing attempts to qualify for stats (lot of option teams). In those, DJ was:
#104 in passer rating #98 in completion percentage #104 in yards per attempt #97 in touchdowns (#105 if you average it by number of attempts) #23 in most interceptions
To really put those numbers in perspective, If you add 10% to his completion percentage, double his yards, triple his touchdowns, and halve his interceptions, he'd be:
#26 in completion percentage #6 in yards #15 in touchdowns #18 in fewest interceptions
That is just how bad his stats were. Playing on a very talented team against horrible competition, he was the second worst college quarterback. If you gave him EVERY single dropped pass (which is stupid, because the overwhelming number of those dropped passes were from him putting them in bad spots or throwing bullets designed to break their hands), he would still be a bottom 15 quarterback. And he actually wasn't sacked that much (Clemson was #27 in sacks allowed, better than in 2020), so you can't say it was the line either.
I also must have watched different games. No question he's strong, but mental toughness? I saw him give up repeatedly last year and saw no leadership qualities in all of those last minute games.
You really don't see why people would think it's crazy for an NFL team to blow a first round pick on statistically the second worst QB in the entire country and the worst QB in Clemson history? Really?

I see your point; he was nearly as good as Trevor Lawrence's stats just last year, for example, and ignoring his good attributes & performances is something only WE do here at Clemson.
I don't love it, that's all. I'm with the author & Coach Swinney & my memory on the idea that DJU can perform at a high ceiling.

A “bad Clemson team” ? Had no idea a 10-3 season would qualify as bad.

Sorry folks, but this is all about the narrative being written. And it will continue to be the demise of recruiting and Clemson in general. Sports media tells the world DJ is a top 5 pick (anyone that watched last years games and #### even the spring game know different). DJ goes on to under-perform vastly based on media predictions. This will place the offensive coaching changes back into the headlines and even falsely fall back on Streeter, hurting our offensive recruiting going forward. Do I believe the media is out to "get" Clemson not necessarily but do I believe the above is going to happen, absolutely.

Yep, it's all just a conspiracy against us.
We're sounding more and more like Ohio State by the day, & I don't love it.

I agree. While last season was disappointing in many ways, I don't think that we deserve to be characterized as "bad team". A "bad team" would have lost to Iowa State 27-0 in the bowl game or played poorly against the chickens. I think that last year was one of Dabo's very best coaching jobs in holding that group together and avoiding a total disaster. A " bad team" would not have beaten a #13 Wake Forest or ended the season with six straight wins. Just saying...

Playing an ACC schedule, 2 losses and several other near- misses is hopefully about as bad as a Clemson team should ever be.

E.g the tools are there and too good to pass on, but he needs a good coach to bring them out.
Its hard to justify one or the other. We’ve had pretty good QB play with Steeter but with Day 1 NFL starters on the roster. Our backups that have transferred out haven’t really been show-stoppers at their new homes. Not to say they’ve been unsuccessful, but it wasn’t “they just needed some exposure”-type players. I can safely say the term “reloading” does not exist for our QB room as a whole. It would be nice to see the same depth / development there we’ve had with the DL.

Would Trevor have done it?
I mean, I know he didn't do it last year with his own uncompetitive team, but the suggestion is it's all DJU's fault, so would replacing him with Trevor have solved the issues?
I'm not so sure at all, & the article suggests otherwise, too, but I'm listening, sincerely.

Yes. A team led by Trevor Lawrence would have been 13-0 and in the playoffs. They would have lost in the playoffs against UGA (who got better as the year progressed) or Alabama, but they would have been there. Clemson would have been in the playoffs at 12-1 with a middling QB.

I hope DJ makes that happen but I don’t see how any serious sports writer could write this. “Bad Clemson team?” The defense was solid. Anyone who watched knows what went wrong and why.

This is NOT to discount DJ because I truly have faith in him if his WR's stay healthy.
But keep in mind this is the league that drafted Mitch Trubisky #1 over ~#11 Mahomes who threw for a billion yards at T-Tech, ~#12 Watson who had one of the best careers in CFB history, and ~32? Lamar Jackson who won a Heisman. Mitch's resume was nothing compared to those guys. If they are big and strong like DJ there's decent chance somebody will want him.

Too funny! This guy obviously did not watch Clemson games last year. DJ had allot to say with the offense being so bad. Not all DJ, but the inability to hit the broad side of the barn definitely hurt the team.
BUT I really hope he is right and DJ has a great season. Really pulling for him.

They obviously agree with Dabo's assessment of DJ. That is good news. DJ obviously has the tools, but he lost his confidence last year. He has to get that back. Dabo seems to be taking the steps to help him, and I hope DJ can regain that mojo. We have the potential, but we must get more from the QB this year if we are going to compete at the highest level.

I really hope for the 2022 season that the projected top 5 pick next year plays this season that way. But so far DJ cannot read defenses and telegraph where he's going. Hey in the spring game 3 weeks ago, a January enrollee free safety read DJ's eyes and made the pick and almost scored, with Cade coming in and throwing the winning TD. And remember opening game last year, the Only GA TD was a pick six DJ throw. So what's changed from opening game 2021 to spring game 2022?? I really think Cade will take over by 3rd game 2022

I would draft Jamarcus Russell or even Tajh Boys over DJ every day of the week and twice on Sunday, even knowing that they didn’t make it in the NFL. He’d be lucky to start in the CFL one day.
