Dabo Swinney talks consequences for Fred Davis
Clemson cornerback Fred Daviswas charged last Sunday with reckless driving and was booked into the Clemson City Jail. Davis was involved in a July 22 incident on Highway 123 with his Dodge Charger and a US Postal vehicle. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney addressed the situation on Friday regarding Da Read Update » |

Hopefully the mail carrier is recovering. Thankful it wasn’t tragic as DS stated though Mr. Davis needs and will receive a life lesson along with the aforementioned discipline.

Does anyone have information on how the mail carrier is doing? I heard there was a fund set up to support her(?) recovery. But I haven't seen a link to the fund or anything about her status for quite some time.

I just read it. It's pretty clear where and how to send funds. It's not go fund me. On line it's credit card only or you can mail a check to the post office or drop it off there. USPS will match up to $5000. She's a single mom of 3 children with an $1100 mortgage payment. I took for granted she was rear ended but on the site it was clearly head on. Skull fracture, spinal injury along with hip and shoulder.

Hopefully she gets enough to never need to work again. My friend's wife had something similar and she got a couple hundred k I believe. That is not enough. I wonder if she could sue Fred if he makes a fortune in the NFL?

Like I've already said... I trust Dabo and the coaching staff to lay down an appropriate punishment. I hope the mail carrier will be OK. This could have been much much worse.

Fair or not, Davis will be double punished. If this were a normal student or one of us, only by the law.
Davis was reckless. We all see these kids driving like that, especially on the Interstate. They are young, inexperienced drivers who believe their skills and importance are special.
This is criminal behavior, but not malicious. It was an accident as he had no intention of wrecking nor harming anyone. Reckless driving means driving in a way that's dangerous to other people. It is sort of a "catch all" for cops. No one can say with accuracy as to his speed beyond that it was too fast. Apparently he was not impaired. Both of those can be a factor in reckless driving.
The results for those not him are tragic. The results for him are also tragic. The penalty for reckless driving is not that bad, pay a fine and loose some points.
I think all should take a step back and let things settle before judging football punishment. There will be some, but it is not the same as if he had this in mind. He broke a law. He harmed people. That can't be undone, but it does not mean he is a bad person.

Well, that’s the price these guys pay for being on full scholarship

just because they are good at football. The free education, the many perks, and the celebrity status on campus and in the community comes with increased responsibility.
I agree, this doesn’t make him a bad person by any means, but there should be consequences for his actions.

I agree 100%. These guys have a greater responsibility than the average student. Kids do look up to them and they do have a responsibility above and beyond that of the average student. They wear that Clemson paw they represent the University.
She has probably already spoken to an attorney and I’m sure he will get sued.
When the official death chart comes out before each game this season we will know what kind of punishment he is getting. I would expect him to miss at least four games. If it were me he would miss at least six if not sit on the bench the entire season. I also would not let him travel with the team.

She would file under workers comp who would basically pay all medical bills. The post office has excellent insurance including disability. There will also be a cash settlement Davis’s insurance company. It’s fine to donate if you want but money won’t be her problem

You’re giving the insurance and PO benefits mechanism a lot of credit without much practical thought. A postal worker makes very little money so she probably lives paycheck to paycheck. Giving to her assures her family is taken care of immediately. She won’t need to wait on a check in the mail controlled by the feds. They could starve otherwise.

Accuracy of his speed? The police got a search warrant and downloaded the data from the Chargers computer system - that's where 115mph came from. In addition, they collaborated that with the distance of the skid marks. They stated that if he had been doing the speed limit the accident would not have happened.

You don’t have to be a bad person … good people suffer consequences for bad decisions.
To downplay what has happened here is sick.
No other way to say it.

No one can say with accuracy as to his speed beyond that it was too fast
This is an ignorant statement. The speed has been verified by both the car’s on-board computer and a validation in physics measuring breaking distance and skid marks.

Maybe. I think he is going to spend much more time giving back to the community and hopefully the victims family than anything.

I’m sure he’ll do both. Probably extra conditioning after practice and community service. That’s a good idea of him helping out the family. Picking up groceries (doubt it’d be “legal” to make him pay for them but picking them up) or other manual labor they may need help with.

Fred Davis was at practice today - living his life.
Imagine if this lady had been driving 115mph and hit Fred. Fred's laid up in the hospital with a fractured skull, broken spine, probably never will play football again. No more NFL career. What would your comments be on here?
What would the consequences to that lady be?
Fred's being charged with a misdemeanor.
Now go back and reread your comments...
"Money's not going to be the problem?"
I'm embarrassed for you.

It's spelled "moron".
And you called me a coot.
I happen to like the fact that we don't have a reputation like Georgia, South Carolina, or Florida. And the alumni have a responsibility to voice our opinion to the university and athletic department that this is NOT who Clemson family is.
Personally, I don't think Fred should be kicked off the team, but he should NOT have been at practice. And he shouldn't be for a while - like mid season.

Sorry, boiz, I obviously missed your woke, millennial, statues with 18k comments. I don't spend a lot of time researching misspelled words on the Tigernet intrawebs because I'm an adult with responsibilities.
With 18k, comments on Tigernet, you must either live in your parent's spare bedroom, or it's your job to post on Tigernet's intraweb comment forums. The only paying career that I can think of would have job posting on Tigernet's intranet comment forum would be someone in PR working for the CU athletic department. So your purpose on here would be to smooth over Fred's f-up...
Also, the fact that DS didn't announce what that internal consequence was tells me that Fred's fate might still be in question with higher ups. I'm sure that DS has made a recommendation, and it will be given much weight. At minimum, Fred's setting up shop in the Love Shack for awhile.

BloodBeOrange - I told you I was 1986 graduate. Keep in mind, in my day, we didn't hide behind computer screens and insult people. We did it to their face, or we didn't do it at all. Because if they didn't like what you said, you might be holding your teeth after.

What would compel someone to drive like that is that he's 19 or 20 with a car with way more engine than you need in a midsize car.

A poster stated... "She's a single mom of 3 children with an $1100 mortgage payment. I took for granted she was rear ended but on the site it was clearly head on. Skull fracture, spinal injury along with hip and shoulder."
And most can't help themselves to defend the perpetrator. Sad actually. And 1) don't call me a coot and 2) this is felony in most states, so don't hide being that.
Good luck with your conscience Dabo.
