Dabo Swinney loves riding motorcycles, except when the unexpected storm comes

You might just have the same reaction as the Clemson coach Dabo Swinney's kids when you hear that he loves to ride motorcycles. Of course, if you listen to local radio -- you'd know he is a Harley man, and he was asked about that on his radio call-in show Monday. “When you have kids, they don’t real Read Update »

I knew there was something that Me and our coach had in common, and that is we both love riding our Harley scooters. For me before I could afford a Harley, I rode Honda's, and Yamaha's, and I had some really, really fast Jap bikes, but when I was around 25, I bought my first used Harley, it was a Heritage softail, and after I got it paid for, I bought a newer Heritage softail that I rode until 2004.

In May of 2004, my wife and I went up to Greensboro to visit her mother. My wife and her mother went shopping, and I decided to ride up to Greensboro Harley Davidson just to look around and kill some time. When I left there, I left with them taking a new Harley out of the shipping crate, and putting it together bc I just bought it.

I went back to the mother In Laws house waiting for the call from the Harley shop telling me that I brand new Harley was ready for pick, and when I got that call, I ask the wife to take a ride to the Harley shop to look around, and the first thing out her mouth was, we're not buying a new Harley today, and I said we're not.

So when we got the Harley shop, the salesman saw me walking in, and he walk up tp me and the wife handing me the keys and telling me the do's and don'ts until I put a couple hundred miles on it, and when my wife and I eyes met, and before she could say a word, I said, baby we're not buying a new Harley bc I have already bought this one, and we won't need a new one for a long time. I'll keep it to myself what was said later that night, but I'm still riding that Harley today, and I'm still married to the same lady!!!

Women will get over anything, as long as you're not cheating, and you're not abusive, or that's way that's it's been with me and my wife for well over 20 years. The best thing that helped out with me buying a new Harley without talking it over with her first, is that I have always kept her in a new vehicle that nobody has ever owned but us, and I've always taken over what we've had whenever I would buy her a new vehicle that she wanted. And she has had 3 new vehicles since I bought myself a new Harley, and IMO, that's more than fair!!! ;)

I noticed he said that several times. I've never heard it referenced that way.

I have always called mine, my scooter. That is what my brother in law that taught me to ride called his big O Harley Davidson Electra Glide full dresser. He always referred to it as his scooter, and he had me riding that scooter at 15 years old.

My sister was 10 years older than me, and my brother in law was a few years older than my sister. My dad died when I was 10, and my brother in law became like a father figure to me. I lived in Pinewood SC, and they lived in Manning SC, and my sister would pick me up on Friday after school, and I would stay with them on the weekends, and all summer. Edward, my brother in law, he bought a brand new Cushman Eagle, and that is what he taught me to ride when I was 11 years old.

At 15, he had me riding that Big O Electra Glide by my self, but, with him sitting on that huge seat behind me. When Edward thought that I could ride his scooter by my self, he took me to his dads hay field, and told me to ride around that field, and I did. After 4 or 5 weekends of of me putting around that hay field, he started to let me ride on the road by my self, with him following me around in his pickup truck.

When school was out for the summer, I didn't go to my sister and brother in laws house for the summer. I was offered a summer job with a field trial bird dog trainer that lived a few miles from my moms, and our house. The job was for me going to Canada where he went every summer to train the dogs bc of the low humidity. Edward encouraged me to go bc he said that it would be good for me.

Right before school started back in the fall, my sister come and picked me up, and she kept looking at me smiling, and I ask her why was she smiling at me, what did I do, and she said that Edward had a present for me, but she wouldn't tell what it was, but I figured he was going to give me that Cushman Eagle.

Boy was I surprised when I got to my sisters house, Edward had bought me a brand new Honda CB 150 so I would have my own scooter to ride to schools like my friends that had daddy's, that could afford to buy them things like that.

I can say that I loved Edward like he was my big brother, and appreciated everything that he done for me growing up, and we stayed very close even after he, and my sister divorced, but they remarried 15 years later, and they stayed happily married until Edward died in 2008, and I still love him, and a I miss him as much as I have anybody else in my family that's passed away. A motor cycle was a Scooter for him, and they are a Scooter to me. Attachment is my Scooter!!!!

That's why I don't ride as much now that I live in Florida. We get a sudden downpour like that once a day. Sometimes twice. "Sunshine State" my ###.

That's why the Rain suits for Scooter riders, are some of the best rain suits that you can buy. With a full faced helmet and your scooter rain suit, none of you gets wet in a down pour if you suit up before the bottom falls out!!!

Oh, and Michelin make the very best scooter tire, especially on a wet road!!!

https://www.amazon.com/Michelin-Commander-Reinforced-Motorcycle-Cruiser/dp/B005J882JO/ref=asc_df_B005J882JO?tag=bingshoppinga-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=80470622177441&hvnetw=o&hvqmt=e&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4584070152554191&psc=1

And they last 3 times longer than the Dunlop tires that come on a Harley from the factory, and I swear it!!!

I’ve ridden motorcycles since I was 10 or so. I hadn’t ridden one

Sep 14, 2021, 9:57 AM

For a while until this summer. Prior to this ride, the last time I rode one was pre cell phones. At first I was like, “ah yea this is awesome”. Then as I approached each intersection I was like, “please don’t be on your phone, please don’t pull out in front of me!”

SC upstate's a great area to have a motorcycle....

Curvy country roads and close access to the mountains. Hard to beat.

I have been on motorcycles for almost 56 years now. On the road for 44 of those years, the others just off road. I've been filthy, I've been beaten and sweaty and I have been soaking wet. For you "none" biker guys . . you know you are wet when your balls are wet, Nuff said :) Rubber side down Dabo !!
