Who is the most underratred Tiger?

Mar 18, 2021, 5:25 PM

I say Hunter Tyson?

Have to agree. One reason the Miami loss was tough to swallow was Tyson was having a good game. On fire for him... And Honor drew everyone to him on last shot. Tyson had a wide open corner shot. Simms was open on the other wing too.

Get ready for a wonderful Tiger weekend. Tons of action. The nightcap tomorrow will be very tasty imho. I look for an easy 10-20 pt win. Probably play out like the WAKE game. Doubt we'll hold it under 40, but under 50 wouldn't surprise me.

Now, that out of the way, couldn't help but reminiscing on the late 70's and through the 80's. Clemson was a sports mecca. We had it going on and personally I think set the stage for excellence and aspirations of Clemson sports.

Highlighted by the natty in FB and dominated by power smashmouth football. Again, one can only dream what would have been with a playoff system.

Part of the reason I "whine" as some suggests over baseball, bball and tennis is living through the decade that was and yearning to get there again. At that time, Clemson had very little going for it in terms of facilities. But we had perhaps our best "group" of coaches.

1.Field and Track - produced multiple gold/silver/bronze medalists to enjoy over 3 Olympics... And oh yeah, the team was pretty good too.

2. Fencing- was lead by hof coaching. Never quite a natty but we competed for it every year.

3. Tennis - 11 straight NCAA appearances. Never duplicated by another sport for Clemson. Some highly talented players that won. Never a natty but how we didn't is a mystery. T I P could explain.

4. Soccer - 2 nattys and many more final 4's. That was a given. Enough said. Hopefully we're back baby.

5. Golf - yep we were winning tournament after tournament. Winning regionals. We'd get close to nattys as the torch was being passed to LP. That's turned out well hasn't it!!!

6. Baseball - kicking butt and taking names. Yeah, we went through a dry spell in the latter 80's although we'd have been in regionals today with the records during those missed years

7. Basketball - Clemson decade of dominance compared to our past and present history. Remember, only 48 got in and it was controlled by tobacco road. Oh, and our elite 8 bounce by UCLA. Look at the names who played on the teams we beat. Oh, and the next year UCLA was called out for ineligible players. Yes, the cards were stacked in a lot of sports. We either played in nit or NCAA. NIT meant something.

8. Football - our first natty nuff said.

This won't get read by many if at all but it was fun reminiscing. Tia

Sadly, I also remember being on probation multiple times

during that era between the football and basketball programs.

I’m so glad we have cleaned things up since then.

As you mentioned though, there were certainly some great achievements then as well. I’m especially proud of the two soccer national championships in ‘84 and ‘87. Coach Ibrahim was a great coach (and also quite a character!).

Due to coaching and boring style of play ...

Ranking the first-round NCAA tournament games from best to worst

After an interminable two-year wait, March Madness is back. Between Friday and Saturday, there will be 32 first-round men’s NCAA tournament games to watch.

Which games from that basketball smorgasbord look delectable and which should be left to wither on the buffet table? Below is an attempt to rank all 32 first-round games from most to least intriguing.

Tier 1: A strong-ass matchup

Tier 2: Two more intriguing 8-9 games

Tier 3: Trendy upset picks

Tier 4: Pure fun

Tier 5: Cade Cunningham alert!

Tier 6: Dangerous dark horses

Tier 7: First Four to ____?

Tier 8: The 8-9 dud

Tier 9: Tune in only for the last five minutes

Tier 10: The 12-5 upset pick to avoid

Tier 11: Beware of the giant slayers

Tier 12: Mismatches

Tier 13: Is there another UMBC?

Tier 14: Only friends and family will watch
32. Clemson (7) vs. Rutgers (10)

The blueprint for a classic NCAA tournament game might be a charming underdog challenging a big favorite, two name-brand programs going big shot for big shot or a heralded NBA prospect showcasing his talent on a big stage. This game, alas, has none of that. It instead pits two starless middle-tier power-conference programs best known for how slow they play and how well they defend.

Yes, Rutgers is making its first NCAA tournament appearance in 30 years, and yes Steve Pikiell and Brad Brownell have done a marvelous job rebuilding previously downtrodden programs, but this matchup is a tough watch. Were this a Big Ten-ACC Challenge game, it would air on ESPNU and you wouldn’t think twice about skipping it. Do yourself a favor and do the same on Friday night.

I had no idea Rutgers was in a 30 year tourney drought

Mar 19, 2021, 3:38 PM

And we thought Clemson's basketball history left a lot to be desired. Sheesh.

If you think Brownell has done a wonderful job; I have some property I’d love to sell you. The end of the Brownell era should have been about 5 years ago. That’s being generous. I’m sick of the state of our basketball program. OPP was the last decent coach we had. The only good coach we have had was Barnes. He saw the writing on the wall and bailed before he lost credibility. Thankfully, some of those issues have been fixed. Brownell has to go.

Barnes definitely our best coach. Just didn’t stay long because the writing indeed was on the wall

This really needs to be said (again). Coach is a nice guy, but he really needs to go. Unless we are content to be at the level we are. Why do we need to just be a football school?

That was an abomination tonight. To have a player of Sims caliber sit on the high post all night is unforgivable.

Why would a top prospect want to come play for him? Good guy, but not dynamic, not compelling. Why do we have to settle? Bama is showing that you don’t need to. Very frustrating. Defenses of him are unwarranted, unless you are willing to settle for this year after year. It would be one thing if there was an upward trend, but it’s clearly flat.
