Clemson remains top public university, leads state of South Carolina in U.S. News rankings

Clemson University was once again ranked as one of the top public universities in the country according to the 2022 U.S. News & World Report ranking of 381 national universities. Clemson tied for No. 30 among public institutions, marking the 16th consecutive year the University has ranked among the Read Update »

Slipped from #20 to #30 and continue to trend the wrong direction for six consecutive years. Jim Clements needs to stop worrying about getting his mug on TV and his growing the University at a ridiculous rate and focus on getting Clemson back up to being a top 20 public university which is the board of trustees advertised number one goal. He’s getting drunk on athletic success he needs to get back to where his mindset was the day he took over the job.

Academic ratings actually went up. Not sure what your point is.

BTW, are you an alumnus?? I'm thinking you have no connection to the University to make a statement like that.

I invested over $300,000 in out-of-state tuition and fees over the past eight years and have two grads. That’s a significant connection.

I'm disappointed that we have slipped in the rankings lately

For all of the talk about record applications and record GPA/test scores for accepted students, I'm confident the ranking isn't falling due to the caliber of our students.

So what is the problem? Class size? Research? Graduate programs?

I for one was against expanding enrollment from roughly 17,000 to 24,000 recently, but I know the university saw it as a way to bring in more tuition dollars to build more buildings, etc.

Clements seems like a nice guy and good leader, but Clemson has a lot of untapped potential and I'd like to see us go after it.

I’m not asking, or suggesting even that anybody believe me, but for what it’s worth I have seen firsthand that he is a different person when the cameras are on. Most people are and that’s fine. He’s got a really important/really tough job. I have also seen him be very rude to students for no reason when he didn’t think anybody was watching which was very disappointing to me because I was drinking the cool aid on him for years while happily writing checks. Just not big enough checks to earn happy Jim instead of sour Jim. I’ve also had more than a few upperclassman tell me that that’s his MO around campus in the day-to-day. Don’t misunderstand my point. I think he’s a very good President and has done great things for the University overall, but it seems he’s getting drunk on power & should reevaluate what’s going on. There have been some serious cultural changes made at the University in senior staffing over the past three years and people moved aside that we’re old school Clemson in the name of progress and growth. I know progress means change but progress too fast and change too fast means some things will go away forever that a school like Clemson needs

I haven't looked into the numbers in detail, but I'd assume a large reason for the drop over the past few years is the increase in the size of the school. Growing enrollment has forced them to accept more students so the admission rate isn't decreasing as much as schools around us or as it would otherwise.

It is a bit concerning we've gone from 20 public school to 30 and from around 60 all schools to 75 now. The USNews ranking is a bit arbitrary and isn't the most important thing, but it still does have relevance.

State funding is a major issue

At #16, UGA is a better fit academically with the ACC..

I have LONG wished UGA was in the ACC for many reasons.
