TNET: Clemson QB talks NCAA allowing athlete compensation and how he'd handle it

Clemson QB talks NCAA allowing athlete compensation and how he'd handle it

Change is coming to college football and Clemson's QB1 is certainly aware. CBS Sports interviewed Tigers starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei recently and asked him about the upcoming changes to NCAA rules over athlete compensation, involving using their name, image and likeness specifically. DJ is about to learn that nothing is “free money”. College athletes are about to learn about FICA , Federal, and state income taxes. I do have a question. Where is the NIL money coming from? Are athletic scholarships about to be repackaged as a benefit?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: and the irs is waiting in the hallway

Jun 3, 2021, 5:13 PM

It will not replace the scholarship, since NIL money will not be coming from the school. NIL is just going to allow the athletes to monetize themselves on the open market like if you or I were to do. By having 100k followers on Twitter or Instagram, advertisers would pay them to wear their products in posts or mention them, or just plain advertising like you see on Tigernet banners. People are making a much bigger deal of this than it really is, it's just letting them earn like any other kid on campus can if they were clever at marketing themselves with something like cooking videos or playing video games, athletes just get to finally do the same.

Most of these guys have had 50-100k followers since high school and have not been allowed to make money off of it due to potential NCAA violations and punishments or ineligibility once they reached the collegiate level. Hope that clears it up some :)

Thank you so much for the explanation. So it seems that athletes will be able to get paid for posts as social media influencers.

I hope the Alabama and Texas boosters don't pay more for Twitter posts than we do.
This is so dumb and it is going to ruin College athletics for me.
If they want to get paid then start a minor league football for them.

It will also allow them to get paid gigs from boosters

I understand what you’re saying but I’ve been working since I was 14 and I can’t remember one single time I “worried” about the IRS. And kids today have a LOT more guidance and support than we ever did back then. They’ll be fine.

How will video games play into this? Will they be getting kick backs from EA Sports?

That will be a separate deal I believe. They have to get the NCAA to go for group licensing, which would be different from the NIL stuff and something that the NCAA hadn't warmed up to yet, I don't think. EA said when they announced the game was coming back that they would be able to use the schools that approve their use in the game but they wouldn't have the individual rosters all laid out (though I'm sure there would be a downloadable roster soon after release). Maybe it will get ironed out before it comes out.

Re: TNET: Clemson QB talks NCAA allowing athlete compensation and how he'd handle it

They should have to pay back their scholarship with the “free money” first (By NCAA rule).
Then it is just regular income and they still have to remain academically eligible.

Some players will try to pay off teachers for grades to remain eligible.
Drug dealers will start paying players appearance fees for bars and concerts......
Overall a bad deal for the players, colleges and teams!

Why should the athletes pay back their scholarship if they're making money from places outside of the school? The school won't be paying them any of this money, so why would it impact the school giving them an education in exchange for playing football for them?

Why would this result in players paying teachers for grades? Why wouldn't a player from a family with money do that currently? Why wouldn't a coach pay a teacher in that instance?

Why would a drug dealer pay a player to appear at a bar? Does the drug dealer own the bar?

They will still be earning that scholarship by playing football.

It's all a bit of a joke to me. These guys won't make enough to warrant the rules. They'll start another upstart league claiming it's not fair. The league will fail. Rinse. Repeat.

Meanwhile, kids languish in school bc parents won't coach them in the books. It's just not at much fun!

The only significant money that will be made will be a handful of household names on top 20 teams. Majority of players on any team will not make a penny. Five years from now we will hear complaining about income inequality! Because only a handful of stars will make the big money and a few other significant players on the really big teams the top 20 teams will make a little money white the rest will make next to nothing. Look at professional sports only a few athletes relatively speaking make big money from endorsements. Most players make little to no money from endorsements.

The reason people on the left and Democrats, going all the way back to the northwestern situation , have been pushing for players to unionize is because once they unionize they can be called employees. The Democrats have been salivating for years about getting their grubby hands on the billions of dollars being made by NCAA athletics for taxes!

This is just another group of people the left and Democrats want to control and manipulate and BS into thinking they care about them so that they can tax it control it manipulate it for their own power.

It’s just like the way the Democrats have been saying over the last 10 years they want to force white Christian churches to lose their nonprofit status so they can tax them. Their justification is white Christian churches have been becoming political organizations. Just another example of the hypocrisy and double standard from the left. Show me a black Democrat community or political leader that’s not a pastor. Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Louis Farrakhan, virtually all of them are pastors and actively involved in politics. The black church has been the political center of the black community for 100 years. Black pastors preach politics from the pulpit. But the Democrats only talk about white Christian churches. Again, hypocrisy, double standard, taxation, power and control!

I’ve been a mortgage broker for almost 30 years. I have done commercial loans including loans for churches. Not real churches like AME churches etc. but these black churches in strip malls. They all operate like a family business. Everyone in the family has a car paid for by the church and a salaried position. No one outside the family has a paid position. They are de facto family businesses with nonprofit status as a church to avoid taxes!

That’s actually how they could get their hands on the NCAA money. Because the NCAA has been doing something that is absolutely against the law which is getting involved in politics anytime they block NCAA events in states where they don’t like certain legislation. That is insane. The NCAA is a nonprofit organization that can lose its nonprofit status for being political. Yet they inject themselves in politics every time they don’t like something that conservatives or Republicans do because they know they are protected by the Democrats. Nevermind those states are passing legislation at the ballot box. A.k.a. democracy! But the Democrats let the NCAA slide on this one because they like what the NCAA is doing and punishing Republican states for legislation they don’t like. If the NCAA for even a moment did something against what the far left likes the Dems would sweep in like hawks and pressure the hell out of the NCAA and threaten them with the loss of their nonprofit status. That’s what the left does. As long as you’re doing their bidding they’ll protect you.

I’m actually surprised Red states have not taken the NCAA to court over the BS they do because they absolutely are engaging in politics which is strictly forbidden by the tax code. The NCAA would get crushed in court and their nonprofit monopoly status would be in serious jeopardy. I wouldn’t be surprised over the next five years to see Florida or Texas do this.

I think that all the money made should be distributed amongst all the players.

The unintended consequences for paying players is truly unfathomable. The institutions should stand their ground. I will go watch Clemson play and root for them as hard as I can as long as the playing field is level with their opponents. I am saying that I will go all in for a lesser athlete...a Clemson student athlete versus a lesser student athlete at Georgia or South Carolina as long as all of the teams are going by the same rules.

NO WAY on Socialism. I am pretty darn conservative when it comes to politics but
I am simply saying I love COLLEGE athletics.
And I want to support STUDENT-athletes that play for Clemson.
I am saying they should start a minor league for football like baseball and basketball have.
Let the guys who want to go pro right out of high school haul ###.
Let them get paid, Good for them. For some its a great decision.
But COLLEGE athletes should be amateurs.
And I will go watch STUDENT-athletes play as long as all NCAA schools play by the same rules.
If all the 4 & 5 stars go pro so be it. Then Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, and Clemson etc will just compete for the best 3 star STUDENT-athletes. And we will get our share. And it will still be fun to watch. Go Tigers!

This is what i've said all along....

Jun 9, 2021, 2:45 PM

I'm tired of hearing the argument that we watch the games for the athletes. BS. I watch, and I believe most people watch college athletics because they care about the school. With all due respect to Trevor, I did not care to watch Trevor for Trevor. I watched because he was the Clemson quarterback. He's a great talent but I will follow and watch him in the pros not because he is Trevor but because he was the Clemson quarterback. If I ever watch another team or player its not because I have to see their talent, its because I want to gauge the impact they might have if they ever play Clemson or possibly to gauge how we would stack up against them. Student athletes need to be student athlete and as long as everybody else is competing for the same players, I don't care if they are all 2 stars because I'm loyal to my team, not to any individual player. IMO, paying college athletes through handshake deals with boosters will ultimately ruin the college game. At least if its twitter or the like, its not coming from a school booster.
