Dabo using Clemson as his piggy bank to enrich his friends just cost us Bates. Nepotism will eventually bite you in the ###.

Could this be the reason he wasn't promoted to the defensive coordinator?

You better be worried about OL coach being hired that’s just a descendent from Robbie Caldwell. He was the IL coach I’ve ever seen & Dano hired his descendent so what’s he expecting the same shot ol coaching we had feom RC ! He should have been fired 3 years ago because our OL was apathetic.

LOL Assistant head coach means nothing

Jan 3, 2022, 1:29 PM

it is just a title. There is a reason the coordinators get paid more and are never assistant head coaches.

That’s “Assistant to the Head Coach,” “Assistant Head Coach” is very important.

Venables was assistant head coach. So I’m guessing Dabo is just different. Because they never assign coordinators assistant head coaches.

I hate he is leaving. I hope we get some new blood in the system.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Someone posted a couple days ago that there was noise

Jan 4, 2022, 4:54 PM

I doubt it. Everything I've heard is that Dabo has surrounded himself with yes-men. Venables was the one person to be a dissenting voice at times. Someone who is very comfortable in their position and is surrounded by "his people" who will always agree and tell them what they want to hear are very unlikely to want to risk rocking that boat. It happens to even great leaders and is human nature.

There are literally hundreds of posts on the first page of the message board about how bad our roster management is and how bad the 2021 recruiting class is. I’m just curious how those things are reconciled? Is the recruiting coordinator not involved? I know I don’t understand nuance but they seem to be contradictory.

You reconcile it the same way that you reconcile someone being a better coordinator than head coach. Sometimes one is better at managing than doing the actual task. Not saying that Bates wouldn't have developed into a great recruiting coordinator but he was certainly a great recruiter.

Not the same thing as roster management. Dabo's "plan" better include someone that can bring in the Jimmy and Joes. Because we've lost a ton of connection power... It's a ruthless business.

Re: TNET: Clemson loses DL coach to Oklahoma

Jun 10, 2019, 11:52 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Clemson loses DL coach to Oklahoma ]

Exactly, and I'll bet that Dabo had no idea that Bate's following BV was in any advance plan. A smart HC never says that it's OK if you take one of my best DL coaches/recruiters that I have on the D side of the ball. And this appears to be the reason that BV has made all his love for Dabo, and Tiger nation public, in hoping to soften his knives in the back of Dabo, and the team easier on his character. Lets not forget, he also tried his best to take Goodwin with him also. And I guess BV's response to Goodwin for saying no, was to make it harder for him to be successful at Clemson.

If you really know anything about human nature at all, then you recognize that BV's only care is about how successful he can be at Oklahoma, and that Clemson is in his past, and he has no concern about Clemson's future. It seems like he is out to prove that the only reason that Dabo has been so successful was bc of him, and what he brought to Clemson, and he has no problems with taking any part of what was with him at Clemson, with him to Oklahoma, and you better believe that is exactly how I see it bc, I've seen it happen many times in my 69 years of life.

And anybody that has been observant of people, and what they're capable of to make it work for themselves when they're finished with who ever helped them along the way. They can be, and most of the time they are Dixie Crystal with their ruthlessness to achieve their own success regardless!!!

Yeah... I saw this attitude in the video of Venables on the plane in Anderson before they left... he put on the Oklahoma cap and said, "let's get going... I'm outta here."

I was really disappointed in his attitude, but figured that he was just trying to express excitement about his new challenge. Some of his "poaching" since then has led me to believe differently. Again, he disappointed me in this regard. I still appreciate all he did for Clemson and that won't change. But, I would hasten to point out to him that "what goes around comes around."

Jan 3, 2022, 6:00 PM

Wish him well!

On to what's next ya'll! He is a huge loss because he is a good coach and even better recruiter! But, Clemson is too established to let this stop us!

He will be hard to replace, but the only way to make new friends of the program is to try! Dabo has a lot of work to do and is probably as excited going into the offseason as he has been in some time. Excited/nervous/anxious all of that! But, he's proven he can handle it and is built for the moment. It would surprise me if this wasn't planned for in some form/fashion.

Go Tigers! Let's find another lead recruiter! The Clemson brand is still strong and should help a lot.

10-3 season with a top five defense and we are back to 2007? Wow. The 3 losses... 7 points to a team that is playing for the title, a double OT loss on the road when Ross could have tied that game, and a 10 point loss on the road in a game that could have been completely different is Shipley doesn't drop the wide open TD. We are no where close to 2007. If we improve QB play a little we are back in the title game. People forget that Bama lost to A&M, and almost lost to Florida and Auburn... Both are terrible teams... And they are in the title game. Clemson is much closer than you think.

FWIW, this change waited until after the early recruiting / first signing day had ended.

It also waited until after the Cheez-It Bowl.

Had it been one of those 'Et tu, Brute?' moves on Dabo, then it would have taken place before the early signing day had taken place.

Not that it doesn't saugen (feel free to look up the German translation).

Not surprising, since I’m sure he wanted to be DC and was passed over

by two others on the staff.

Stinks to lose him though, because he is a good recruiter and nice guy.

I wish him all the best at Oklahoma.

Yes,despite all the superlatives about Goodwin,Bates had paid his dues and was a blessing to the Clemson defense. As for Conn,I think it was one of the dumbest things Dabo could do,handing that job over to an unproven friend. I don't care WHAT he did at Grayson. So,if I was Bates,I probably would have been pissed also, and now he gets a great job elsewhere. The same man who builds a dynasty can also make it crumble.Fasten your seat belt,it's gonna get rough. Not etched in stone, but written in ink.

Yeah he is Judge. It may not be over either. We still have Elliott out there putting together a team.

It's all about the Jimmy and Joes. BV just reeled in another great rb recruit. Meanwhile, we're looking at a 3* rb in Texas. Hopefully just a backup plan to ETN2. You can promote any GA to teach techniques... Bates/Venables/Elliott were monster recruiters and that's what it all boils down to. Hence, so many posters wanting big name replacements.

And no, roster management is NOT the same thing.

Maybe Dabo knows something we don’t know? Maybe there’s a reason Dabo didn’t promote Bates to DC? But what am I thinking? Tigernet posters know a lot more than our 2 time natty champ, 150 game winning, 10 consecutive 10 win season coach.

Nick Saban on poaching coaches (2019):

Nick Saban: “What I have a tough time with, aight, is we’ve had however many guys who have worked here who are at Georgia, Tennessee — whoever, wherever — is when they get those jobs, and in most cases you’ve helped them, is they have a hard time understanding why they can’t take your people. I’m gonna help you get a job, [only] so that you can take what I’ve tried to build here and destroy the continuity of what I have? It’s amazing how some of the assistants don’t understand why that’s not a good thing.”

Bill Belichick on poaching coaches (2019):

“Look, I’m happy for the people that have worked hard for me to get opportunities. I want to see them build their own program. When they try to tear down our program, that’s kind of where the line, I feel like, gets crossed.”

wow - this is a huge blow for us to recover from in the face of so many players and coaches moving on - sure wish we could have kept him!

So much for BV telling players and coaches to stay put and his not stealing them...I guess that orange turned to red pretty quickly!
Can't blame BV though - he has a job to keep too and got a great person and coach!
You do have to wonder, however, why we couldn't keep him? The money is certainly there with the decrease in salaries for the OC/DC!

Jan 3, 2022, 2:35 PM

If I was him I would have absolutely taken it as a gut punch for me to do all I did for the university and being one of 2 qualified candidates (Mike Reed & Bates) and both being passed over for co DC & it be given to Conn who is far less qualified but better buddies with Dabo. I'm all for Wes but it should've been Wes & Bates or Wes & Reed. Just really sad that we are losing him

Re: TNET: Clemson loses DL coach to Oklahoma

This should not come as a surprise. After being passed over by 2 less qualified coaches (in terms of ability to recruit and develop players, actual playing experience big time college & nfl) what did you expect. I was quite surprised when I heard CDS, Godwin and Conn all say CDS had basically told them years ago he envisioned them as Co-DC's. It appears he didn't let Bates know about this part of his future coaching plan and then to try to placate him by giving him a bullsh!+ title of Assistant HC. That was an insult. Now it will be interesting to see if there's a continuation of the Freinds and Family Plan for the next hire or what. Bates and CBV are some big shoes to fill when it comes to recruiting. This is going to be very interesting.

As much as I like Dabo this friends and family thing is not a good look. Yes some is fine but it is extreme now in the number of them. The topper was Conn though. If I was Dabo and even suspected it may be possible I would lose Bates if he wasn’t named a DC I would have gave it to him over Conn to keep him. So much for Venables not poaching! I like him too but it’s getting a little less every time we lose someone to him. This is a big loss but I can’t blame Bates.

Jan 3, 2022, 8:14 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Clemson loses DL coach to Oklahoma ]

Im starting to have a problem with several things and I get attacked all the time for it. 1. this friends and family thing as you call it is getting tiresome. 2. I am tired of recruiting who Dabo feels will fit Clemson's program and when something happens like they decommit then we rush to find someone else. Alabama, Georgia, Ohio St, etc offers every 5 and 4 star. They know they wont get them all but if they get some thats better than none. 3. This culture is nice, the relationships are nice, the family atmosphere is nice, but winning is better. Saban has it figured out, he does not care about culture, family, etc, he cares about winning and thats what he is paid to do. I do not want to hear people complaining when we are 9-3 again next year. I hear everyday about how Clemson is done, Clemson dynasty is over, and if we do not recruit like AL, GA, OSU, LSU, etc then they maybe right.

Less qualified? Are you in the meetings? Are you at practice? Do you work for the program?

Thought not. None of us know who was the most qualified because we do not work with them day to day. Looked to me like Wes did a pretty darn good job the other night and Conn has allot of coaching experience. I would not say this is Dabo choosing friends.

I believe Bates was a good coach and recruiter, but do you remember who he replaced? Most thought we were in trouble. I'll believe Dabo has a plan until he shows me that he does. BTW, I think Godwin did a very good job in his first game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No chance that Dabo and BV had not discussed this prior

Jan 3, 2022, 3:38 PM

Just no chance that BV would snag anyone off Dabo’s team without discussing it with him first. That fact would mean that Dabo already has a plan.

To me, this is the equivalent of losing Jeff Scott. High energy guy, great recruiter who players love. Bigger blow than losing TE. I had hoped when he got a bigger title this issue had been put to bed. Apparently not. BV is doing a lot of the things Dabo used to do before he became "famous."

One thing no one is talking about is the 2022 D-Line recruiting... There is no one signed. A lot of misses. Regarding the OU hiring, I highly doubt Dabo was unaware of this. And it's entirely possible that Dabo was ok with it, gave his blessing, and wanted to find a new DL coach himself. We'll have to wait to see what Dabs has to say in his next presser.

Truth is most of us never heard of Bates before Dabo hired him. Now we are sure we’ll never survive his leaving and Dabo doesn’t know what he’s doing. Relax. Folks, this happens in successful organizations all the time. You have a great team, but you can’t promote everyone. I’m sure Dabo considered what would happen if he named Goodwin as DC vs. Bates. He chose Goodwin and Bates is moving on. I have no idea if we could get him, but I’d love to get Brentson Bucker as Bates replacement.

Clemson might as well have sent yhe defensive coaches with Venables. Getting more than tired of seeing them going to Oklahoma. I think Venables would be looking elsewhere if he was appreciative of his years at Clemson (and his paycheck). I'm sure Dabo is pleased with Venables taking all of these coaches. A couple is understandable, but it has gotten past old in my opinion.
