Clemson lineman says some teammates have "six-figure" NIL deals

The Name, Image and Likeness era is here and some Tigers are really cashing in, according one Clemson player. The offseason doesn't usually lend to interviews with Clemson athletes outside of media days and after practices, but we got an inside look into the changing face of college sports thanks to Read Update »

Nobody knows how this will all shake out, but reading his thoughts about some players at other positions making more money on NIL deals (and it being the same way in the NFL) I got to wondering.

In the NFL it isn't rare for a QB to take his OL out to dinner during the season or buy them gifts at the end of the season.

Would it be within NIL guidelines for DJ to do the same? "Hey, guys, here's a $100 gift card to Bass Pro Shops. Enjoy."

lots of grey areas id like to know the answers to

i even raised the other week..say a booster wants to buy a kid some grocerys is that still off limits? kind of odd that a booster can buy tons of merch from a player but cant just give him the cash for some food.

I'm wondering the same thing.

Or even.. can he "pay" his lineman as a thank you ?

I would certainly think so but wait that would require logic and common sense, so probably not.

I'm just waiting for the QB who doesn't want to share the wealth with his OL so they start letting guys through. If a QB takes it all for himself, it's bound to happen eventually.

Attended the 100th Clemson vs. USC game on a broken ankle from 8 hours earlier. Got a recliner in the endzone for the 100th game...it was worth it. Story in Profile.

With what he is saying, the writing is on the wall, and it says the courts have single handedly destroyed what we've always known college FB to be!!!! It was a sad ruling for the biggest sport that attracted the fans to college sports around the world!!!

"I love this place, I've got a spot already picked out where I want 'em to put me when I die - up there on that ole hill near the stadium. I want to be there so I can hear all them people cheering my Tigers on Saturdays; then I won't have to go Heaven; I'll already be there."- Frank Howard

I agree with you Mr. Howard!!

I really hope the NIL doesn't ruin the sport either but it's probably wasted energy to worry because I think it's almost guaranteed inevitable.

Ruin how though?

Will locker room strife even be noticeable to us as fans?

Did you read the article? He mentioned a few ways and specifically mentioned the path of recruiting not being the best fit for the recruits but the largest opportunity for monetary gain. And basically said the issues between the "Have's and the Have-Not's". College sports where money can change a recruits heart overnight (ie. Alexander), the sports will forever be tainted.

Sports like Softball or Track where it's going to be for the love of the sport, free schollies and not the monetary gain will be the least corrupted sports.

Re: Ruin how though?

I'm not so sure that the non revenue sports might not be more affected. In football and basketball, only a handful of individuals can afford to enter a bidding war. If a booster has an interest in a say volleyball, there is a lot better chance that they can make a difference in the decision.

So many of the rules that I have heard, seem very subjective. If I want to get my checkbook out to get a player to endorse my daughter's lemonade stand, do I not get to put the value on that endorsement? I might have to call her grandmother, to get someone better than a woman's shotputter, but my point is that as long as someone gives the right reasoning they can pay whatever they want. Soon there will be a phone app with a drop down menu of allowable reasons that a booster is paying an athlete but there won't be a limit on the amount box.

free agency with 1 year max contracts

Jul 18, 2021, 7:07 AM [ in reply to Ruin how though? ]

teams will now be able to buy players into the portal. Agents can handle all the dealings for a fee. It's coming for sure.

It is supposed to prohibited from being used as a recruiting inducement but look at the Miami deal guaranteeing each player $6,000. What's to stop an agent from shopping the portal after a player signs and plays a year. Agents will have or quickly develop a network and it will most likely be tied to certain schools.

Face it, college athletes are now professional students who get paid for going to college. I see no issue with some making more money than others because that is life and if they cannot deal with it then their working lives will be miserable. There is no industry that I know of where everyone makes the same amount of money and most definitely sports do not work that way.

Agreed! It was great until it got "woke" ... and then NIL to completely ruin it. I've stopped watching and gave up on the NFL about 2 years ago. Instead, my hobby is cooking and DIY projects around the house and garden. It's educational, I've gotten good at it, pretty instant gratification ... and nobody calls me a racist!

Hunting or fishing with friends and family! Beats pro sports!
Canceled my Woke Astros Tickets after over 15 years and a couple of World Series’s.
No more Rockets or Texans or Cowboys for my $$$$$$. I rarely watch any pro sports on TV now.
Just don’t screw-up our Tigers!
If it can be done properly, Dabo will handle it the right way.

I hope you realize...

Jul 17, 2021, 11:10 PM [ in reply to I hate all of this garbage ]

CFB was ruined by money well before NIL.

It's sad so many are just now starting to complain about it because players now benefit from the pot of gold.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I hope you realize...

Jul 18, 2021, 9:18 AM

How had CFB been ruined by money? The most dominate schools are primarily in small market areas. Money was the push behind a BCS championship, the expansion to a playoff, and likely to the expansion of a larger field. Maybe it just looks good through my orange colored glasses, but it seems like college football is doing pretty well to me.

And nobody is complaining about a kid getting part of the pot of gold. NIL has basically been implemented without a plan, and few rules that appear to be hard to bypass. Between the courts rulings and the NCAA throwing its hand in the air, what happens when a kid puts NIL in front of his athletics and/or his academics? Will a coach be able to discipline him, or will the kid be able to sue on the basis that the coach negatively affected his income?

Every industry has regulations. If I want to build a house, I have to pull a permit showing that what I want to build meets the rules for where I want to build it. Then it is inspected to verify that it conforms to those rules. The rules, codes, and regulations have developed over a long period of time. Down the road NIL will likely be a good thing, but it is going to take some time to identify problems and put rules and regulations in place to control them or eliminate them all together. The lack of concern for unintended consequences is what people are concerned with and in some instances complaining about.

I just hope it doesn't become a thing of selfishness. In other words, play me longer, give me the ball more, let me score more TDs, and so on. Sometimes you can get more money if your stats are better. We are a team and need to stay that way.

I have not seen any deals reported which would be anywhere close to six figures. Most would do well to break even
