plague of college athletics

Apr 5, 2018, 4:28 PM

yes the kid has to sit out a yr, but its likely worse for the home program as they scramble to fill a spot with someone who doesnt know the plays/culture

needs a quick fix to stop the bleeding— accepting school has to pay a fine or is limited to number of transfers accepted every 4yrs

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not necessarily...

Apr 5, 2018, 4:37 PM

Transfers have really worked out in our favor lately, no?

Do you think Reed would have been happier if he had stayed at Robert Morris?

The only reason we were good this year is because of transfers. Reed, Mitchell, Thomas, Skara, and Donnel were all transfers.

Do you really think Reed was better off playing at a mid-major for 3 more seasons? Or do you think Thomas was better off playing behind Texas A&M's other very highly rated PF/Cs.

Based on the past two seasons, this is probably a move that works out for both Spencer and Clemson. Hopefully, we'll be able to fill this spot with a quality contributor, if not for this year, but for 2019-2020.

I have to agree. If Brad has any hopes to continue what he has done, it will be
through transfers. Not recruiting. We just can't build this program on players
who take 3 to 4 years to develop.

I agree, but I disagree about the transfers...

Apr 9, 2018, 2:07 PM

we hit the lottery that we hit on 4 transfers that became primary contributors to a tournament run... that's atypical of a transfer who transfers laterally or up in competition. I don't believe the transfer market will sustain this level (ncaa tournament invites) because the next group probably won't hit this well (it's a numbers game and it is going to average out). Sustained success has to be built through our own 1st recruits, some who will take 2-3 years to develop combined with freshman and sophomore wunderkinds... if Mitchell gets hobbled next year, that two game stretch without him will become the norm again, because we do not have another point guard to really set and run the offense... Reed is ok in a pinch but unless he cross trains his game and his mind, he will struggle running the team in Mitchell's absence. I hope BB uses at least one of the open scholly's to get a freshmman point guard to come in this year to learn behind Mitchell... we don't currently have one on the bench nor in the 2018 class...

Grocery store charge you more because you left the one you'd been loyal to for the past several years?

Might need to spell it out...

Apr 5, 2018, 7:29 PM

There is a better kid ready to come to Tigertown (grad transfer likely). Thank you Scott, you will always be a tiger.

good logical retort

Apr 9, 2018, 7:37 PM [ in reply to Re: plague of college athletics ]

its not about the player all the time, its about the program and heath of whole ncaa

enough with the mefirst metoo thinking society

reneg the transfer options, up the nba age limit, and start making more productive college men

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

College athletics are supposed to be about the kids.

Apr 5, 2018, 8:08 PM [ in reply to plague of college athletics ]

If anything they deserve more freedom, not less. If it's in his best interest to go somewhere else where he can get more playing time, so be it. I hope he does well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think this is a good thing for us.

Apr 6, 2018, 3:50 AM [ in reply to plague of college athletics ]

Maybe we can fill another need with a transfer? Hope we land another PG.

Prior to the season, thought he would possibly make a significant impact. Was rated by Rivals the number 138th prospect regardless of position and in the top thirty for his position by both ESPN and Scout.

I'm thinking Brownell already had some incoming transfers in his pocket, and let Spencer know his PT will be limited. Mutual benefit.

Re: TNET: Clemson guard to transfer

Apr 5, 2018, 7:30 PM

Good luck to Scott. He never quite reached his potential at Clemson. Coach Brownell needs to locate a quality point guard or an inside player to spell Thomas so our frosh players have a full year of development before having to play beyond their capabilities initially.

I felt early that someone would transfer and hopefully we build off of the opening.

Go Tigers!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that would not be good for Brownell to have done that

Apr 5, 2018, 8:48 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Clemson guard to transfer ]

we caught lightning in a bottle with Reed, Mitchell, Thomas and Donnal... that level of play from that many transfers is an anomaly, definitely not the norm. players don't transfer because they feel they can play up in competition, 9 times out of 10 it's because they were not playing much where they were (see Spencer and of the recent transfers out of Clemson for reference).
what we REALLY need is a point guard who can back up Mitchell... we will fall back to the lower tier of the conference if he misses significant time on the floor next year...

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How often have we really been lower tier under BB?

Apr 5, 2018, 9:28 PM

Maybe 2 seasons?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

5 out of 8 seasons have been 7th or lower in conference

Apr 9, 2018, 2:15 PM

one year he finished in 6th, the others are 4th (in his first year), and 3rd (this year). when we were 6th, we didn't make the ncaa, but did make the nit and lost in the semi final game...

so yeah, that many lower tier years

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Lower tier, not mid tier.***

Apr 9, 2018, 3:51 PM

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

because I chose the vernacular for my point, my tiering

Apr 9, 2018, 5:42 PM

is that 1-6 is upper tier, 7-12 is lower tier... and to be fair, 1-4 are shoo-ins for the tourney, 5-6 have a pretty good chance usually but 7-12 is a crap shoot and are usually not invited. so, if anything, I would say that 5-6 is mid tier, but only for your purposes, because I don't believe that you are mid tier if you don't make the tournament. the fact that we didn't make the tournament with an 8-8 in 6th place conference record in your "mid tier" year, the landscape of college basketball in general said that we were an after-thought...

To further e'splain this to you Lucy... I believe that only 1-3 are upper tier in the sec, and sometimes 1-4 because that's all that they usually get into the tournament...

So, it's upper/lower for me, set your bracket however you like...

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hate to say this...

Apr 5, 2018, 6:49 PM

But I was hoping it was Spencer.

I wish the young man the best and hope he takes his game to new, impressive levels.

But what I saw from him this year left a lot to be desired. Fella has the courage to take a shot, which is great, but when’s the last time he made a bucket? And that foul against Duke at the end of the game? Uggggh.

Hope he scores 36 next year in an NIT victory against the coots! Best of luck SS.

Not really a surprise

2 scholarships still available now. Would like to add one more freshman and a transfer of our own

Any names you know as possibilities?

Re: Not really a surprise

Apr 6, 2018, 9:57 AM

Here's an article from STS (so take with a grade of slaw) that has some possibilities, as well as a list of eligible grad transfers that could play immediately.

https://www.shakinthesouthland.com/2018/4/5/17204012/clemson-guard-scott-spencer-to-transfer-what-are-the-implications

https://gradtransfertracker.com/potential-transfers-1/

Of course at this time we wouldn't know anything official as most would be rumors/speculation.

We're actually in the hunt for 5 star, 6'10, PF

Apr 6, 2018, 10:04 AM [ in reply to Re: Not really a surprise ]

E.J. Montgomery out of Georgia. He was a heavy Duke lean but they've already signed the top 2 PF's in this class. Some talk that 6'3 SG Trey McGowans at Hargrave(originally Wren HS) may reclassify from 2019 to 2018. He's a solid 4 star, top 150 guy.

As for transfers, who knows? Already 400 declared and that number will swell to 700-800

I along with most other Clemson fans would love to see us get both those guys
