Anonymous coaches break down Clemson offensive issues for ESPN

Clemson's offensive struggles have marked a surprising 4-3 start to the season after beginning the year ranked as high as No. 2. ESPN went to the coaching world, anonymously ($), to get a look into what's going with the No. 113 scoring (20.5 PPG) and No. 117 total offense (321.3 YPG). "What's differ Read Update »

Really?

Oct 25, 2021, 8:47 PM

So there are people saying our oline is tough? I think to a man/woman we can all agree the oline is a weak link on the entire team.

DJ played as well as TL last year and has shown DW/TL potential. He's obviously not playing up to that potential. He may or may not get there and has a long way to go to regain that form, but it's too soon to write him off. He obviously shares or is responsible for the biggest issue on ofense, but no one disagrees with that

We averaged 4.49 yds/carry last year when we were in the playoffs, and this year we're averaging 4.42 yds/carry, which if I did my calculation correctly is 2.52 inches less this year. So, losing ETN is not the reason we're having so much trouble on offense.

Losing Amari Rogers may have dented the WR corp, but he alone is not a reason we're struggling. We got Ros back. The injuries have hirt, but the biggest issue here is drops. Again, nobody disagrees with that.

So in all, what exactly are you referring to when you say, "when the same things are said here.." you see pushback?

Re: Really?

Oct 26, 2021, 8:35 AM

DJ did not play as well as TL last year. His stats were good in the time he got to play, but if you compare the ND games, TL was able to tote the rock and throw downfield. This led us to a blowout win.

In both games last year, similar to 2 games this year, DJ's play has lead to defensive touchdowns. It may not have necessarily been his fault in all cases but he was on the field.

The ability of the quarterback to be able to be a dynamic rusher and passer pays huge dividends. Besides QB power DJ has a tough time running the ball.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Really?

Oct 27, 2021, 7:09 AM

Couldn't disagree with this more... you are really off base on your assessment. #1, DJ never threw a single interception in the ND game last year....Trevor did though. #2. DJ's stats from the game were better than Trevor's...passing yards, yds per pass, and QBR. Passing and rushing TD's were identical... both had 1.

The loss DJ had last year, vs the blowout win, is simply the proficient of the defense having a bunch of guys out the first game... the difference is ND scoring 47 the first game vs 10 the second.

That's why this year is even more baffling with how he looks.

I remember being so angry at 10-2 Hatfield and booing him in the stands. I was a student. However, people I used to call blue bloods looked down their nose at me. Said we have to be cheerleaders no matter what. Nope. When some half coach backs a Nat Champ team into a 10-2 season you’re angry. Fast forward to Kelly Bryant. I was screaming for TL to go in game one. Cheerleaders on here lambasted me for speaking the truth. We will always have those blind cheerleaders afraid to speak the truth. I’ll always call a spade a spade. That doesn’t mean I don’t love my Tigers!! Whether we are 6-7 or 13-0, I love my tigers. But I will complain when something stinks. Right now, a lot stinks!!

this started getting even more exposed in 2019 LSU game, then OSU 2020, again in UGA 2021

that something was wrong. But instead, our coaches got complacent and probably told themselves that everything was fine since we were winning the conference and making the playoffs.

Re: Exactly. Those losses should’ve been a wake up call

Oct 26, 2021, 8:24 AM

Woah woah two of those losses were at the hands of the defense not the offense. TL had the worst game of his career against LSU and the defense gave up 600+ yards. Last year with OSU the defense could stop nothing. O line had nothing to do with either loss? When we lost to bama in the sugar bowl we didn’t run at all and got smacked . We didn’t run the ball in all three title games with alabama and not until the last one when the game was over and the bama defense had their will broken did we gain yards. Be honest the line has never been a strong point. This season is the second year of Elliot as solo coordinator and he’s terrible. Watch the ND game and the BC game last year ajd please explain what happened to the QB. He was decisive. His reads were good. He threw on his toes and when plays were there to be made he made them? What changed? There were signs of trouble coming when you watched the spring game and saw how awful dj looked in that game. He was terrible. What happened to his mechanics? Who is teaching this? Every play we run is like it’s in slow motion to start off with. No quick inside handoffs instead long drawn out mesh points and fakes. No three step drop and hit a receiver for a quick gain. Instead take the snap have a two second fake then stand in the pocket wiggling your happy feet holding the ball and panicking? DJ is the biggest kid on the field against some of these defenses and he girls up like a sissy at the first sight of contact? I’ve yet to hear Tony Elliot say “it’s my job to have these kids ready to play and to put them in the best possible position to succeed.” Haven’t heard that. What I hear is drops and execution well coach you’re the coach. Coach ######. Why aren’t they executing? Suddenly our players cannot function? Remember how much we laughed at Muschamp at Florida when he had linemen blocking each other? We’ve done it there times this year? This season has been an epic fail for coaches. We lose a good Safety to the portal but Nolan turner is still starting. Still getting beat like a dog, still bouncing off RBs when making a tackle and still taking horrible angles trying to tackle players? He’s a liability yet there he is and there goes a good player? Our defensive line is nowhere near what it once was? Why? We’re getting the talent but we’re not developing them? Murphy has been disappointing considering his talent. It feels as if the coaches and players came into this season like “we’re Clemson, and we just win” but they’re not doing anything else but showing up?? Watching the putt panthers hold the ball for the last seven minutes of the game was humiliating! Every tigers fan should be pissed off about that. Pat Narduzzi and his three stars embarrassed us and now that weasel is crowing and taking shots at the coach and Clemson. The entire country wants to see Clemson fail and the coaching staff is granting them their wish. Stop excusing them

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

nope.....that's wrong

Oct 26, 2021, 8:53 AM

the OFFENSE was to blame.

This day and age of College Football to win a national title you're going to have to score mid30s-40s on ANY defense. It is what it is.

Our 2019 offense went up against an LSU defense that was ranked mid30s on defense and we scored in the 20s..........WITH TL & ETN. That can't happen. It's not the loss that upset me b/c that LSU team is one of the best offenses to ever play college football. EVERYBODY knew you had to score to beat them and that was doable considering LSU was not good defensively, but we sure a heck made them look good.

fast forward to 2020 Ohio State. They had the 40th-ish ranked defense in the country compared to our top 5 defense. We put up 28. We were tricked into believing that our offense was some juggernaut both years because we ran all over the ACC putting up 40+ ppg. Then we go against a little bit of talent, but not great defense and we get essentially shut down.

The offensive cracks in the foundation have been apparent for the last 3 years, but many fans bury their heads in the sand b/c we "made it to the playoffs"........you have to look deeper, you have to take off the orange glasses to understand that SOMETHING offensively has to be tweaked along with other "program" tweaks.

or else we're doomed to 8-4/9-3

Oct 26, 2021, 10:00 AM [ in reply to Re: Exactly. Those losses should’ve been a wake up call ]

Forget the Notre Dame last year that DJ played in. We do not have any of the skill players and a different offensive line this year. Last year was smoke and mirrors compared to this year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree that the defense was an issue at times in the past.

Oct 26, 2021, 3:25 PM [ in reply to Re: Exactly. Those losses should’ve been a wake up call ]

But the overall trend with our defense is that it is reliable, even against good teams. Our defensive coaches, especially Venables, have shown the ability to adapt and innovate.

Today's game features explosive offenses, so the days of holding a great offense down seem to be behind us. Sometimes, the offense will need to keep up to win the game. Our offense hasn't always been able to do that when we have needed them to.

I'll give you Ohio Stale. Not sure anyone could have beaten LSU. #1 UGA, offense TD away. When you have players like Watson, Lawrence and the Et man, they can hide a lot of shortcomings.

Re: TNET: Anonymous coaches break down Clemson offensive issues for ESPN

Oct 25, 2021, 7:59 PM

You got that right, T3Tiger.

Many times the really good programs can overcome one 'unit' deficiency to have a good or good+ season.

But when there is a convergence of multiple 'unit' deficiencies, not even the really good programs can overcome that.

Not to equate Ped ... uh er, I mean Penn State to Clemson, but here goes.
Penn State (number 7 until IL ran for 357 yard on them) had depth limitations at D-Tackle; when their super stud D-Tackle went down their entire D-Line turned to pudding. Then, Ped State has an impaired QB (injured) and not suitable alternative to actually play and win. So here's the #7 team in the country finally getting exposed in their 7th game because they could not overcome the simultaneous 'unit' deficienies at both QB and at DL.

Look at Clemson's terrible luck this year.

QB unit --- deficient (not ready to 'win' until maybe next year). Recruiting miss at QB? Not exactly, but DJ is not a ready-to-go as an underclassman like D.Watson or T.Lawrence. DJ is more like K.Pickett (who was well regarded but really hadn't done much until this ... his 6th year in the program.

OL unit --- deficient (no Center ready to play winning ball at start of year). The attempts to find a suitable Center meant too little overall continuity at Center, and disrupted the continuity of the Guard play. Now we have a Center that tries hard, but isn't yet physically developed to play championship football. (But OL recruiting has been really good the past 2 classes; the anonymous ACC coach who blasted Clemson's OL will be having his A_ _ handed to him by us next year.)

WR unit --- deficient. (1) Recruiting misses [with 'highly regarded' Freshmen ... no names] have undermined this unit, and (2) unusual number of injuries / illnesses (EJ Williams / Brannon Spector / F.Ladson / J.Ngata) finishing the ruination of the 2021 WR unit.

When even the 'easily better-than-Ped State' programs have not just one, not just two, but THREE convergent 'unit' problems, then victories are going to be tough tough tough to come by.

Oct 26, 2021, 7:57 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Anonymous coaches break down Clemson offensive issues for ESPN ]

Seriously? The last time the ACC sniffed a bowl challenge was…a looong time ago. Not to mention the SEC has owned our league head to head for a minimum of 3 years. Name the last time Lou beat Ken, Tech beat UGA, or anytime we’ve been above .500 in the last 5 years as a league vs Big 10 or SEC. Clemson has Had success until TL was a sophomore. We’re closer to .500 vs SEC schools. The gap is wider than it has ever been. I hate to say that. Ugh.

True, CU1976, but you are perhaps being a bit generous by referencing some of the "skill players as not playing up to their potential" when it comes to the WRs, and a bit harsh when categorizing other "skill players" as being a disappointment.

Too many of our good skill players (e.g., WRs) are hurt.

Too many of our other 'skill players' (butter-fingered WRs who won't block) may turn out to be recruiting busts. If those among our numerous butter-fingered WRs don't hit the portal, then it will be a tremendous accomplishment if T.Grisham can whip those under-performing WR's into pass catchers and adequate blockers.

but its a lazy take to say, well they dont have Watson, TL, ETN or Mike Williams/Higgins....its not like we replaced them with chumps. Their replacements are all high ranked 4-5 stars. I guess another way of saying it is we dont have a guy that say...'give me the dang ball and I'll win it for us'....I'll agree that guy doesn't exist.

As for the Oline, recruiting isn't elite at that position but its very, very good and well above average. its a coaching issue and their toughness as a group has been questioned for several years now...honestly outside of ETN breaking some runs and good QB runs, we have never been able to run the ball very well under Caldwell. Gallman earned his years though, he was a tough runner.
