I am too. Although, Hunter was a 5* too that was a bust... And he actually had some good coaching mentors but still never put it all together. Plenty teams have had 5* qbs that were busts. Were top dogs in HS and had all the "measurables" . obviously, per Dabo, dj5 can show out in practice, 7 on 7's , camps etc but then can't do it for whatever reason in live game situations or take longer to develop. We'll know more after a couple games.

Hunter Johnson looked great in the spring game in Trevor’s first spring in Death Valley.
Trevor looked the best, then Hunter, then Chase Brice, then Kelly Bryant.

I thought Kelly was pressing to throw the ball, and looked bad; not his game.
Hunter left in May, knowing back-up was his ceiling behind Trevor.
He could surprise everyone if he has to take the field this fall.

I like our QB room this year, our most talented ever!
DJ5 has to be successful, or there are 3 quality options right behind him.
Best man plays! I wish DJ5 the best, it is his job to lose.

If He Returns to 2020 Performance or Better He Will be #1

If not Cade would quickly become Top 3

its truly unbelievable how we finished last season in terms

Jul 12, 2022, 2:58 PM

of QB play. It just didn't make any sense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Really was. Although, pretty incredible that we finished

Jul 12, 2022, 5:43 PM

with 10 wins. Most teams that finish with 10 wins have a QB that throws for 3,500 yards, runs for 500. Tosses 30 TD's, has 10 INT's and completes nearly 70% of their passes.

We, on the other hand, did it with a QB that completed about 50% of his passes, threw for 2,200 yds, and had more INT's (10) than TD passes (9).

I usually don't like to say "it can't get any worse," but.....that's a pretty abysmal stat line. I think the QB play improves this year and we're back in the playoff.

One of two things is going to happen. Either, DJ is going to prove everyone wrong this year or he is going to prove everyone right. I with-hold my judgment up to this point.

Re: Knowing that

Jul 12, 2022, 4:26 PM

he has to play light years from last year is probably tougher that knowing he was filling TL's shoes. The pressure is on more now than ever. His performance last year was 3rd string QB at best. As soon as there was video of him after a game coming back out into the stadium to practice throws with a team manager then all the sirens went off and started flashing warning. This will be a situation that will make or break a person. Either he will prove he is the man for the job or he will need to step aside and see who has the grit to perform and lead. Either welcome the challenge or bow down to it. We shall see.

Trying to state the obvious here given focus on DJU - hope he has an outstanding year - but football is a team sport. I hope the offense has less injuries and the OL jells into something exceptional!

The QB gets too much of the credit for wins! And too much of the blame for losses. You can say: "it comes with the territory, but that's just hot garbage somebody who doesn't make practice says because they have heard a thousand analyst say it over the years"!

Football is the ultimate team sport! If that OL is not doing a good job on certain pass plays(slants/quick game) the play looks like hot garbage. It doesn't work and lamin call out the QB.
The WR runs the wrong route on a timing route; bringing the defense over to help instead of clearing out a safety or CB - the QB gets blamed.

So, glad to see someone say that besides me!

Thomas Austin Being OL Coach will be huge!

Jul 12, 2022, 7:57 PM

Coach Austin learned not only from Coach Caldwell; but also from Coach Shawn Elliott. Coach Elliott was at SCAR during their little run; and i.m.o was the main reason they were so tough during that time. He knows OL play and he knows how to get the most out of those guys.
I am holding out hope that Thomas learned some nuance from Coach Elliott and has brought it back. As well as his own ideas he picked up from the NFL.

If the OL is improved; DJU will be improved. At least, he should more opportunities to do something with the football(1st downs and shorter down and distances).

There's a reason QB's get the blame & credit ...

Clemson loses 2016 & 2018 natl championships without DW4 and TL16. DW4 beat one of the best all time defenses in 2016 - arguably Bama's best ever. TL16 complimented one of the best all-time defenses in 2018. Bama challenged TL16 to beat them - he responded and then made it easy by throwing perfect passes to Tee and Justyn and Hunter that just would not be thrown or caught by 2021 team. Top QB's earn 25% plus of pro football payrolls. There's a reason. QB is most important position in sports world.

Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl and was awful.
Peyton Manning in 2015 didn't win the Super Bowl. I think he had like 116 yards or so.

Football is the ultimate team game SocMan2; so I full-heartedly disagree! But, I respect your right to your opinion.

In my opinion though, "I don't care how good a QB is; if they are on their back they can't hurt you"! I.E. the play is over if they get sacked or if RB's get tackled in the backfield constantly and then that same QB is facing 3rd and long all game long!
And, what if he is great, but the defense stinks. Hello Dan Marino!

Without the entire team; the team doesn't win!

Analyst who try and make QB's pitchers are the chief blame for this! They make statements like he's x, y and Z in his last 4 starts facing X, Y, Z. Much, much different than baseball though; because if you're dominant enough the rest of your defense can "almost" just sit back and watch; but for some ground balls and pop flys.
I respectfully disagree; as no QB at all can win games if the play's are over before they start. They also do not play an ounce of defense(Marino again).

QB is far and away the single most important position

Jul 12, 2022, 10:41 PM

Is it more important than all other 21+ positions on the field, combined? No. But its far more important than any single one of them.

Maybe, if we Clemson Fans would let Dabo coach and forget about the QB situation for 2022...
We might fully enjoy the totality of success we have had in the oast few years. We stunk the
4 years I was there. I don’t think...I know Dabo knows what he is doing. Good luck to D.J.
But.....we will finish this year undefeated with him as QB or not. Just relax!

IMHO…

We’ve had over a year of data with DJ. I think that’s enough.

And enough about 2020. Wasn’t great. He lost to ND, a team that we cremated with Trevor back.

He didn’t even win the last 2 O&W games FFS.

And I’m not talking about just wins and losses, overall execution, etc, because I know he wasn’t the only one making mistakes or that had weaknesses. I’m talking about watching HIS play and HIS play only. Decision-making, sight, accuracy, leadership ability, etc, everything that he could control himself. I’ve seen enough data over the course of 2 years. In my experience in the past, it doesn’t improve as much as what people are hoping.
