VT is not going to hire TE. The AD there is no dummy.

Should have led with the part about OU being a bigger dumpster fire than maybe uof8c now.

Nah, I'd like to see Elliott stay if he continues to adopt and adapt the offense that @orangeman suggested in his post yesterday concerning 12/21/22 personnel. But we'd survive him going tbh.

But CBV - DRad needs to draft one of them 10 year 55 million dollar contracts for Brent. Whatever it takes. Scrap the renovation project or get rid of a couple sports if we need to in order to pay the man head coach salary to continue doing his thing here. He!!. Give him 9 million.

3 possibly 4 sports...

Would easily free up the necessary revenue and return it to it's rightful place, if only-

Come on David, if you need a story to write, write about the masterful goose egg that CBV gave us in more than 3 decades. I walk more miles a day than the cooters had rushing yards. Make no mistake, scar ain't that bad of an offense. They moved it pretty good in Athens... And scored points on uga. Scar played against good defenses but the job CBV put on em was nothing short of genius.

They literally have one of the worst offenses in the country. They are terrible.

Still doesn’t take away the outstanding plan BV had and how great the d executed. It’s hard to shut out even the worst offenses.

I know their stats. I've seen every game they've played. We have the same offense. So I've really seen it twice every week.

I’d love for what you are saying to be true —that BV won’t leave. But I don’t see that happening. He’s the perfect candidate for OU. Coming from a Tiger living in Sooner country, his name is far and away the number one on most lists. The sooner chat boards are heavy on BV and many rumors that we see an announcement today. Would love for the best coordinator in America to stay at Clemson but I don’t see it.

Re: TNET: Venables and Elliott hot names as coaching searches heat up

I think that OU will ultimately go with an offensive guy, unless they can be assured to get an OC they want which won't happen without a head coach. If offered the job, I think that Venables would take it, but I would be surprised to see the offer come.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ya know what's kinda funny...

Nov 29, 2021, 4:22 PM

....the coaching carousal that is college football.

Its literally a post-season soap-opera every year.

I wonder how many head-coaches the SEC has seen in the last decade.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Ya know what's kinda funny...

Nov 29, 2021, 8:42 PM

I think the AFLAC question on one game was "How many SEC head coaches have been hired since Nick Saban was hired at Alabama?" As I recall, the answer was 61.

Re: TNET: Venables and Elliott hot names as coaching searches heat up

Nov 29, 2021, 5:13 PM

There's no way that Elliott is a hot name in coaching searches, no way. Venables, yes, but I don't see him going anywhere. Why would he? 2.2 mil a year in seasons to come, why would he take a head job for just a bit more than that and take on all that pressure when he has it made right now? I mean, I don't know the guy and he may want to be the boss, but that makes little sense to me.
What can't he buy right now?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly . . .

Nov 29, 2021, 5:47 PM

No way TE is a hot prospect generally. This is just an easy stock line to spit out b/c it has been true in previous years. But this year, no. TE has in some ways been exposed, and for all the rebuttals that he "hasn't forgotten how to call plays," it's clear that his room to grow is larger than has been generally assumed when he had Jeff Scott on staff or better players to cover up his (TE's) anemic playcalling.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Exactly . . .

Nov 30, 2021, 2:09 AM

Head coach doesn't have to call plays.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Exactly . . .

Nov 30, 2021, 6:56 AM

Except ours, who apparently overrides him quite a bit. There's still a small amount of head coaches that do call the plays.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Exactly . . .

Nov 30, 2021, 9:42 AM

Yes, some head guys do call the plays, but in all fairness this guy said the head coach 'doesn't have to' call the plays. He might want to hire an OC to call the plays instead of keeping that responsibility on top of all the others a head guy has.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Exactly . . .

Nov 30, 2021, 10:46 AM

TE is a classy, well liked, highly educated man. If he could hire the right assistant coaches he would be a great face to someone's program. Ultimately he's often the smartest guy in the room and could utilize that knowledge from a CEO mindset. Who would he hire tho? His playcalling doesn't have any flow to it. He would rather run 10 set plays rather than determine that during the game. He would need a good OC.

First off, if OU really wants BV, they would triple his salary. That said...

OU is the employer that got rid of him before. Do you really want to go back to a place that dumped you?

And, I do agree with the X's & O's point. BV is all about doing the work, but not the politics.

If Barry Switzer still has influence, it won't be Venables! About the 33 minute mark. https://espnsiouxfalls.com/podcast/popup/?id=5ff47aa5c45d1132c63c992c&item=0&theme=light&playertype=player

It's easy to say you want to stay so your kids finish school... but dozens of millions of dollars changes that. For you and your kids. If offered he's gone.

This is what kills me with media pundits, they always want to replace HC’s and Coordinators, every season! This crap has got to end, seriously! Jesus Christ!, if I was a coordinator and #### good one at a school where I’m having great success, recruiting very well, winning games, competing for Conference, CFP or Bowl games, why in the hell would I want to be considered for a HC job especially if I have zero interest in ever taking on that spotlight! The media has gotten to the point of pure stupidity! I got an idea why don’t one of you media idiots go become the HC of OU, Va Tech, and now Notre Dame and do what you constantly said the other guy couldn’t do, that’s win! You idiots in the media think being an HC I’d the job, go apply! Hope your fellow chums talk as much crap about you as you did the poor guy who was the HC. In fact I personally hope you get FIRED after one season! Pure Ridiculous and Stupid!

Hearing BV to OU is all but done deal.

Nov 29, 2021, 10:32 PM

I'm pretty shocked by this as I also thought he'd stay at Clemson while he still had kids enrolled. But apparently this was an opportunity he couldn't pass up.

Stoops will leave Kentucky. That would be a great stop for Tony Elliott or Duke is a good option too. The wheel of change is spinning hard this post season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Hearing BV to OU is all but done deal.

Nov 30, 2021, 11:00 AM

Duke would make sense and give him several years to prove himself as a bowl eligible team annually. Expectations are moderate outside of Basketball. Kentucky would be like Chad Morris 2.0 in the SEC. The best coaches in the SEC are defensive minded coaches.

Re: Hearing BV to OU is all but done deal.

Nov 30, 2021, 9:10 AM [ in reply to Hearing BV to OU is all but done deal. ]

I may have accidentally thumbs downed when I meant to comment. The BV to OU is probably true....his son has already said he will not return to Clemson next year. I thought then that Coach Venables might be leaving, and that being the reason his son announced he would not return next year. I hate it, but it makes sense. Unlike many, I wish the best for him if that is what he does. He has done way too much for Clemson for me to trash him if that is what he chooses to do. He definitely deserves it. OU might be scary with an actual defense. I hope it is not true, but the evidence with Jake Venables makes me think it is, and he likely knew it then.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Hearing BV to OU is all but done deal.

Nov 30, 2021, 9:47 AM

I hate it for us, but if true...
my admiration for CBV is only increased by the fact that, even with this going on, he has certainly embodied the saying
"Wherever you are, be ALL THERE."
Nothing but best wishes for him.
And still hoping this is just a mistaken rumor.

If Clemson University loses Brent Venables it will be devastating. His defensive coaching/recruiting has brought us 2 National Championships. If Oklahoma offers a long term deal it would be hard for him to turn it down. You don't get an offer from one of the top football legacy teams and turn it down . Selfishly , I hope they look elsewhere but Brent Venables deserves it and more. All the best Coach Venables.
