Uiagalelei and Elliott discuss the good and bad in quarterback's performance

Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei put up solid if not spectacular numbers in Saturday’s 49-3 victory over SC State, but he knows there is still plenty of room for improvement. Full Story »

It is worrisome they just nonchalantly blow this stuff off as “no problem it is fixable”. I saw several under thrown balls and a lot of over thrown balls. Two missed TDs especially on the wide open one. Even the TD throw was high. I know a lot goes on that we can’t see like a lineman effecting the throw but the two missed TDs are big.

Taison came in and was laser precise.

The good is it was SC State. The bad? Where do I begin… 6.7 ypc. Against a team like SC state. (No disrespect to them) Running up the middle the whole time, (they knew they could and still wasn’t great) no tight end involvement, never utilized the middle of the field, zero creativity, sorry oline play, (kind of bad when their dline penetration is successful against us) no long passes down the field consistently, not scoring in the 4th quarter regardless of what string they are, and the list goes on…. It hurts to type this as we should be WAY PAST all of these discrepancies. I love my Tigers and will continue to do so. But Tiger Nation, something has to change and change quickly. If not, we can only dream of the Playoffs this year. Go Tigers, BEAT TECH!! (With coaching please, not just out-talenting the other team)

PS - Defense on the other hand has only a few MINOR issues to work out but light years ahead (as usual) of the offense. Coaching maybe? Of course. But that’s another rant to be had.

I don't think they are "blowing off anything" ... I think the coaches know what they think they can fix and what they cannot... you vast experience as a coach was where?

I still see DJ having to run an offense that still belongs to TL16 and the OC has done little to make it DJ's game.

Almost the entire game against UGA it looked like DJ5 was doing his best impression of TL16.

I'm wondering if maybe he's been given too much responsibility of the offense and that's why he's a little hesitant with decision making.

Not gonna lie, when TP7 came in it felt like there was more confidence at the wheel.

Going to be real interesting the next few weeks if TP7 continues to look better.

Not sure if DJ5 is close to a short leash by any means, but I'm wondering what things are going to look like for this offense if DJ5 doesn't start to pull away more from TP7 in terms of performance.

I love winning any game

and readily admit to being a Clemson homer but even I know that the offense was nowhere near spectacular.

I read that line as they put up good numbers, but not spectacular. That is certainly a true statement, lot of room for improvement. Hope we continue to see that.

You're right, I read it as good numbers nonetheless, even if it wasn't spectacular.

None of us know the real why but you know it's something. If SC State can give DJ pre snap fits and stunts that throw him off, then we're in trouble. Of course, uga didn't have to show him much... They just bull rushed us and won. As a 5* number 1 rated QB, you're supposed to be ready from day 1 to be a gamechanger.

A year and 8 months into learning D's and you're having problems figuring out what SC State is doing. And that doesn't account for the poor throws.

Re: TNET: Fixable?? Yes

DJ doesn't need to throw with same velocity on every throw. Still thinks too much. Don't think the receivers help sometimes. Think their mental part should be if I can touch it I will catch it. Don't think they are fighting for the ball every time. ( see Cornell Powell from last season ). As far as DJ goes he simply needs to relax and let the game come to him, have fun, be focused every play and then the consistency will come. Still think even in blow out wins the starting Offense and Defense needs to play through the 3rd quarter then start subbing in the 4th otherwise starters will be out of sync.

Dabo & Elliott can't afford to be publicly critical of DJ...

Sep 12, 2021, 8:34 PM

yet.

In practice and in private, I'm sure they are coaching him hard and not mincing any words.

If he doesn't improve, their public patience will eventually run out.
