TNET: Tony Elliott expects NC State to employ similar structure to Georgia Tech

Tony Elliott expects NC State to employ similar structure to Georgia Tech

What does Tony Elliott expect to see when the Tigers face off against NC State Saturday afternoon in Raleigh? He expects to see the same type of defense Georgia Tech employed last week.

Hopefully he has a plan B if they don’t.

Well, I hope Elliott’s expectations are correct this week.

Sep 24, 2021, 4:10 PM

Our staff was caught totally off guard last week, and spent most of the game trying to figure things out.

We can’t have a repeat offensive performance tomorrow or we will lose.

Why would Tony announce what he's preparing for? Whether it's obvious or not.

I agree completely. I have never understood why coaches (CU) disucss game plans and opponent expectations with the media. No other professional would give the public or their competition what the next business adventure is going to be. Sometimes, I think CU staff has gotten away from the mission: plan, execute, surprise, win. Wait, it that what Georgia Tech did and almost, almost pulled off the upset?

Sep 25, 2021, 7:26 AM

Realistically, its kind of late for them to change what they are going to do. You practice all week, especially if its outside your norm. If it is the norm, then they wont change it anyway. State will come out in its best sets and dare us to pass. Elliot isnt saying anything unexpected and State will do exactly what we do expect, until it doesnt work.

I would hope he is lying, when he openly discusses schemes...like Vince Dooley used to do every week of football season. Be deceptive.

Flip-flopping yet again

Sep 25, 2021, 12:54 AM [ in reply to Well, I hope Elliott’s expectations are correct this week. ]

Of course they got caught "off guard". It was a defense GT doesn't run, and they practiced all week against what GT typically does. How in the world do you suppose they were going to be "on guard" for a brand new defense??

It didn't take them all game to figure it out. They figured it out right away, and put the game-winning adjustments in at halftime. That's what coaches do in football - halftime adjustments.

Again, stop flip-flopping. In your attempt to bring football down to basketball's level, you change your tune everyday. You obviously don't understand the things you say, but you just want to jump on the pile. You aren't really a big football fan, and its obvious you're not very knowledgeable. I don't say that to attack you. It's just obvious you're trying too hard.

One day you're on the coaching and the next day you're agreeing its an execution issue.

Yet again, the issue we're seeing is an execution issue. Its not coaching. The same coach led this QB to the record for opponent passing yards in the grand ol' history of Notre Dame. Do you think he forgot how to call offense in the off-season?

Again, this coach has been the primary playcaller for #2, #1, #4, #1, #2, and #4 rankings the previous six seasons. Our total offense has not dipped below #10 in the country under this same playcaller. Do you think he just forgot all of it before this season?

The issue is a new QB who is having some difficulty developing as a starter. Clearly its mental as he has already proven his potential with a 67% completion rate, the comeback against BC, and the aforementioned record at Notre Dame.

If you insist on ignorantly (lack of knowledge) claiming the playcaller forgot how to call plays over the summer, then go ahead and flaunt it. But stick with it. You've contrarily previously agreed you understand the real issue, a struggling QB, so if you really believe that then stick with that fact.

But geez, stop the ridiculous flip-flopping!

They're going to just use their regular defense and you won't be prepared for it. DON'T FALL FOR IT!!!

I hope he has them prepared for everything and will actually adapt at halftime if something surprises him again. Look for a hurry up from them on offense and I think we should do the same. That may actually surprise them but I don't expect anything different from us.

Tech played a 3-3-5, but the three linebackers weren't

Sep 24, 2021, 6:41 PM

"dropping" most of the time. They were sending one or two on every play, and the third one was in on the run quickly when it was clearly a run. Same for some of the corners, especially on the wide stuff. They were flat blowing the wide stuff.

I am not a fair weather fan. Been a Tiger since birth so 47 years at this point. Seen some bad times.

I will always call it like I see it. For me I hope DJ gets this thing turned around and the oline improves. These are legit issues. Does not mean I do not support our boys.

Tony (who just seems like salt of the earth and someone you really want to succeed) quite frankly has struggled calling plays for several of years now. Just bailed out by mobile QBs. OSU schemed the heck out of us last year. When was the last time we saw Tony do it. I want to see TE take the next step.

We adjusted at halftime

Sep 24, 2021, 11:28 PM

From what I’ve seen from our offense, I would run a 5-2 and dare them to throw it….

I seriously doubt that Elliot would tell the public everything he is expecting them to do. I have a feeling that this will be the first week this year that we look somewhat like the Clemson Tigers we have come accustomed to.

Flame away!!!

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If they don't, will we claim we were surprised again?

Sep 24, 2021, 11:44 PM

The point of having a game plan for your opponent is to have an element of surprise.

Especially with a QB that is playing slow and scared to throw the ball or should I say can’t hit the sweet spot. It’s not going to be very hard for other teams to stop our predictable, vanilla Offense.
Just having better talent won’t work unless you have that special QB. It’s time to get creative, Tony !

Here is a novel concept that some have clearly forgotten or don't understand. It's not the other team's role to do what we want, expect or are prepared for. I know, scandalous right? That they would do things we were NOT prepared for? The nerve! What's next, trick plays? BLASPHEMY!!!

NCSU expected Tony to employ similar structure, too. He did. Maybe worse.

Well, this says a lot about Tony.

Losing to a defense that we were expecting, means we can't adapt.
